Although she had a brief life, the HORNET proved invaluable in the confused early days of the War, providing some sort of balance in the Pacijic. She participated in the battles of Midway, Guadalcanal, and was jinally sunk by her own crew during the battle of the Santa Cruz Islands to keep her from falling into enemy hands. Ten months later, on August 30, 1943, the present HORNET was launched, and upon arriving in the Pacijic Theatre, began immediatly to if uphold the tradition set by her forebearers. Operating with Task Force 1- 58, the HORNET participated in raids on Palau, Yap, Truk, the capture and occupation of Saipan, and the battle of the Philippine Sea. After several more campaigns, including the Leyte operation, the battle of Surigao Strait, Northern Luzon and Formosa attacks, she served as a troop 'trans- port from 1945 to june 1946 during operation Magic Carpet. ,P The HORNET was mothballed, and remained out of commission until RNFT M gfggggg M V A 1953, when she was recomissioned C VA-12 at Bro- gg,, r gg Sjih A T oklyn Navy Yard. After a short stay with the gfg, g Atlantic leet, the T began an around-the- world cruise, arriving in the Pacific in 1955.
