• '' 'yr- i f: v: - rntm Ti' wfc-ftf- At times I get to thinking Of where I want to go What I want to accomplish It's something I must know I have to look around and see Just what is in store for me. The future may be unclear, But it’s something I do not fear Lisa Hesse Looking to the future, we can see endless possibilities that we may encounter. However, achieving our goals is not as clear. We have chosen “Destination Unknown” as the title and theme of the 1986 yearbook, since we have strived all through our school years to plan our future, not knowing what the final outcome will be. The 1986 Maple Leaf Staff Maple Leaf 1986. Volume 52 Hornell High School Hornell, New York 14843 Our 1986 yearbook “Destination Unknown” could not have been dedicated to a more deser- ving woman. A few words that sum up her characteristics are: REMARKABLE: She is an en- )L thusiastic teacher that brings out the best abilities of her students. DEVOTED: She does her best each day to help her students receive the best education possible. FRIENDLY: She is full of cheer and smiles and will always lend you a word of wisdom. GOOD NATURED: Her per- J sonality brings sunshine and smiles with wittiness and humor to the halls of H. H.S. To the “Queen of the Castle”, whose sobri- quet in her classroom is the “Boss”. Mrs. Phyllis Herrick, thank you for making learning interesting and for the inspiration that you give to all. With 1986 being your year of of retire- ment, we hope you know you will be greatly missed! ;dication The 1986 Maple Leaf Staff The Summer of 85 in Hornell was anything but dull with the hot sun and no school. Seniors could be found everywhere; downtown, at the parties, James St. Park on the 4th of July, the Carnival, crusm' the town, or just hangin' out with good friends. Here we've captured just a few seniors having Summer Fun. Looking for actl Crusin' the Main St. Strip Spending time with good friends With the start of practices, we know summer is at its end and the dreaded day approaches DRUM CORPS El Senior Officers 10 Destination Unknown Punam Aggarwal David R. The evening began with a formal dinner for the candidates and their escorts at Johnnies on the mall sponsored by the Hornell Alumni Association. Following dinner the candidates, Regina Hall, Bridget Sciotti, and Christine VanDuser, and their escorts, Tim Rosell, Scott Smith, and Collin Champlin, respectively, were honored to be led to the football stadium in the first Homecoming Parade ever, which greatly exemplified the spirit of Hornell. At half time the master of ceremonies, Sean Barnes, announced the awaited decision. Miss Regina Hall was named the Homecoming Queen of 1985 by the Senior Class. She was crowned by last year’s queen Erin Curran. 1985 Homecoming Queen mwx Regina Hall and escort Tim Rosell Bridget Sciotti and escort Scott Smith 1985 Homecoming candidates Christine VanDuser and escort Collin Champlin 168 HIGHLIGHTS A Night In Paris The Queen end her court Advltor Mist Mulerzend chaperones The Junior Prom was held on November 29, at the K of C. Thanks to the efforts of the decorating committee and their ad- visor, Miss Mularz, the K of C was magically transformed into a replica of the City of Romance”; Paris. Sue Smith was crowned by last year's queen, Bridget Sciotti. Sue was escorted by Bob Burd. The prom court consisted of: An- drea Secondo escorted by Mickey Carretto, Sue Crowley escorted by Jason Potter, Kathy Burdett escorted by Dave Hunt, Kathy LaBarron and her date Chris Norton, Karen Claire with escort Zack Kelley, and Christine Canfield with date Steve Lewis. The D.J., Infinity Sound Productions,” made the evening a huge success as they closed with the theme song, Forever. The evening will also be remembered forever by the beautiful wine glass favours each couple received. 170 HIGHLIGHTS A I HIGHLIGHTS 171 Candlelight Ball Queen Kim Johnson The 1986 Candlelight Ball was held on February 8th at the Hornell High School. The Ball was spon- sored by the Camp Fire Horizon Club and SADD. Kim Johnson, escorted by Dave Young was crowned Queen by last years Queen Lisa Pulkowsky. Her court was Kelly Covell escorted by Todd Eviston. Joe’s Disco provided the entertainment for the evening. 172 HIGHLIGHTS JOSEPH Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was magnificently brought to life by the en- tire cast directed by Mrs. Piper. Andy Drew, then a senior, had the starring role as Joseph, fellow seniors Johanna Topping and Kim Fisk narrated the play, and Chris Norton was the Pharoh. The chemistry between the cast and audience was electrifying, all the way down to the Hairy Ishmelites, which made the play a screaming success. 174 HIGHLIGHTS The Best Christmas Pagent Ever For the first time in a couple of years the school put on a Christmas play, “The Best Christmas Pagent Ever.” It was a story of six rotten kids who, in learning the true meaning of Christmas, turn in- to caring, decent kids. What made the event even more heart-warming was that the canned goods collected were donated to the local needy. HIGHLIGHTS 175 Foreign Exchange L My family here I have always wanted to come to the United States of America. Until this past year, I didn’t have a chance. Then AFS came along and made the dream come true. It has been a great experience for me. I would like to thank the terrific AFS program and the families I’ve stayed with; the Brandt’s and the LaBarron's. I would also like to thank all the friendly people I’ve met who have made my stay here pleasant. Ahmad Aljbour My brother Ayymen and my sister Hanada Me riding a camel 176 HIGHLIGHTS - $5 3Krr adQL)bog'' In 1984 I applied to be a Rotary exchange student because I wanted to learn about foreign cultures. I ar- rived in the U.S. in August 1985. My understanding was that there were either very rich or very poor peo- ple, but I didn’t know anything about the middle class. Through my experiences with my three host families, Heineman’s, Kelly’s, Isaman’s and my host Rotary club, I found out that there is no difference between people in general. It is the difference bet- ween government and culture in the two countries which make the people appear different and we at- tempt to generalize the people after their goverment. I have enjoyed my stay here in Hornell very much. Everyone has been very friendly to me. Hornell is a perfect city to be an exchange student in because it is small enough to get to know people yet big enough to see a variety of life styles. I would like to thank my three host families whom I have grown to love as my own family. Also, I thank Rotary and the people of Hornell who have done so many things for me. It has made my year enjoyable. HIGHLIGHTS 177 H.H.S. Concert Band Row 1: S. Cavelletti, S. Heffelfmger, L. O’Connor, T Mauro Row 2: T. Fiacco. K. Khork. K. Salico, K Burdett, K. Dickey, K. Instead of Nassau we went to Freeport. The sun, sand and surf was a nice break from the snow and school. We landed in 75 degree weather with the sun shin- ing. On our last day we went on a 5 hour cruise which included snorkeling and building sand castles and playing volleyball on a private beach. The Art Club would like to thank Mr. Printy and the other chaperones for the wonderful time! Row 1: P Prunoske, J Prunoske. D Brown Row 2: S. Crowley. R. Clark. L. Harold. T Rosell. A. Reynolds. In our years at H.H.S., we have prepared to grow and mature into responsible adults and hopefully acquire the knowledge we would need to have prosperous futures. The time has arrived when we must leave the fun and frolic of high school to step out into the real world. Our goals and ambitions may be set, but only the future and the changing times hold the true key to our destinations. The 1986 Yearbook Staff chose the title and theme song “Destination Unknown to carry the idea of the uncertainty as to what our futures will bring in this ever changing world. We know we must set out to fulfill our dreams and meet our goals. 1 wish the Class of 1986 the best of luck in the years ahead. 1 hope this yearbook will always stand as a reminder of the days which have preceded our “presently unknown” destinations.
