• . • and now Discussion for the present high school started in May 1956 after ten outlying districts voted to consolidate with Hornell because of increased enrollment. Plans for a new school moved slowly. The school district held four referendums beginning in September 1958 and finally winning support in May 1961. Ground breaking took place on july 18, 1962. Before final approval was given by the tax payers the school district was forced into double sessions from September 1960 until September 1963 when the present school was opened. In August 1965 the swimming pool was added to the present Middle School. Another gymnasi- um (B gym) was added to Hornell Senior High in September 1975. To prove conclusively that the Class of 1982 is the 100th graduating class the following chart is presented. The Beginning • The first students were graduated from high school in Hornell 31 years after the school was in existence. Although the high school has been in existence since 1852 there were no official graduates until 1883 which therefore makes the 1982 graduating class of Hornall Senior High the 100th graduating class. It was named Hornell Free Academy in 1873 with Halsey J. Danforth the first principal. Ten years later there were two students who made up the first graduating class. Lyman H. Best and William K. Mosher received the first state graduate diplomas in the school's history. Until 1886 the school was a square building standing where Hornell Middle School is now located. It was set back on the lot with two square grass enclosures in front of it, on each side of the walk. At that time, the Park Grammar School occupied the first floor of the high school building. In those days students marched to classes with musical accompaniment. In 1886 a new building was erected, not much larger that the old, but including a third floor. The third floor was used as a mam- moth assembly room with a stage equipped with several sets of scenery, and open gas footlights. From 1884 to 1888 graduation classes were held in the Park Methodist Church and First Baptist Church alternately. After 1888 graduation exercises were held on the third floor of the high school building until it was condemned as unsafe, whereupon the ceremonies were held in the Shattuck Op- era House. The present Hornell Middle School building (formerly the Hornell High School) was contructed in 1922-23. Ground was broken for the new building May 2, 1922 and the corner stone was laid Au- gust 17, 1922. Class room work was started in the new building September 19, 1923. The building was officially opened for public inspection Nov. 24, 1923.
