“A Vision for tl e Eighties” The years have gone by fast, And here we are the Senior Class. We've made it through a test of time. But there will be many more for us to climb. We have gained the knowledge we need to know, Our teachers have showed us the ways to go. We are a moving group with an infinite sight! Waiting and watching for a guiding light. Our dreams and endeavors are waiting to come true. With our limit only the spacious sky of blue. Let us shoot for the stars and set our goals high. For with our abilities, like the Eagle we will fly. The road to success will be long and winding. But the mysteries of the world are ours for the finding. Let us apply ourselves, that we might be; Exciting, Energetic, and Forever Free! The future is ours, with the eternity of life to live. Let us Love, and Enjoy, and be willing to Give. May we cherish the memories and knowledge we've gained. And Strive for the Dreams and Goals that Remain! Susanna M. MARGARET A. CAAAOA Thanks for being everything yon arc! best! 100% A GREAT PERSOiY The 1983 Yearbook Staff The Beginning • The first students were graduated from high school in Hornell 31 years after the school was in existence. Although the high school has been in existence since 1852 there were no official graduates until 1883 which therefore makes the 1982 graduating class of Hornall Senior High the 100th graduating class. It was named Hornell Free Academy in 1873 with Halsey J. Danforth the first principal. Ten years later there were two students who made up the first graduating class. Lyman H. Best and William K. Mosher received the first state graduate diplomas in the school's history. Until 1886 the school was a square building standing where Hornell Middle School is now located. It was set back on the lot with two square grass enclosures in front of it, on each side of the walk. At that time, the Park Grammar School occupied the first floor of the high school building. In those days students marched to classes with musical accompaniment. In 1886 a new building was erected, not much larger that the old, but including a third floor. The third floor was used as a mam- moth assembly room with a stage equipped with several sets of scenery, and open gas footlights. From 1884 to 1888 graduation classes were held in the Park Methodist Church and First Baptist Church alternately. After 1888 graduation exercises were held on the third floor of the high school building until it was condemned as unsafe, whereupon the ceremonies were held in the Shattuck Op- era House. The present Hornell Middle School building (formerly the Hornell High School) was contructed in 1922-23. Ground was broken for the new building May 2, 1922 and the corner stone was laid Au- gust 17, 1922. Class room work was started in the new building September 19, 1923. The building was officially opened for public inspection Nov. 24, 1923. • . • and now Discussion for the present high school started in May 1956 after ten outlying districts voted to consolidate with Hornell because of increased enrollment. Plans for a new school moved slowly. The school district held four referendums beginning in September 1958 and finally winning support in May 1961. Ground breaking took place on july 18, 1962. Before final approval was given by the tax payers the school district was forced into double sessions from September 1960 until September 1963 when the present school was opened. In August 1965 the swimming pool was added to the present Middle School. Another gymnasi- um (B gym) was added to Hornell Senior High in September 1975. To prove conclusively that the Class of 1982 is the 100th graduating class the following chart is presented. I spent most of my summer in the small seatown of Civitanova Marche. I stayed with the Tozzi- Spadoni family which consisted of my father, Francesco;, my mother, Angela-Haria; two brothers Carlo and Luigi; and a sister Laura. My stay with my family at the seaside was spent just relaxing and enjoying ourselves. We also spent some time traveling to such places as Rome and Venice. I particularly enjoyed the seaside because the atmosphere seemed very relaxed and open. At this time I became very close to my family and friends Ky experience presented many new and exciting challenges by establishing a relationship with a family and making new friendships. In such a short period of time I learned so much that I found it hard to absorb everything. Through my experience I now feel more patient and confident in my views The memories of Italy will always remain warm in ray heart. I would like to thank AFS for such a unique and special experience I Mike Secondo AFS '81 Mike and friends On (he beach Mike's host family 76 Highlights St. Peter's Cathedral Mike and friend at the Collesium When I left Mexico, I didn't know how exciting my AFS experience would be My experience started when I was at the AFS orientation at UCLA, California in July. During my trip I met AFS students from all over the world. After that I came to Horne11 and met my American family, the Willeys. The way of life in Hornell is completely different from that of Mexico. I come from a large city, Monterey, whose population is one million. I like the people from Hornell because they're very friendly. It is nice living in Hornell because every- body knows each other. I thinlp Hornell is a very nice town for an exchange student to live in. It is a quiet and peaceful place to live. This year opened me to different ways of seeing the life and customs of the United States. It also gave me more maturity to challenge new things that I may encounter later in life. I would like to thank AFS, the Willeys and Hornell for giving me the opportunity to know all the friendly people that I have met I will never forget Hornell. We contrasted the past with the present without omitting the future. The past is represented by the front liner which is reminiscent of the high school as it appeared 100 years ago. The back liner cap- tures the high scbool as it exists today. The history of the school is presented with a story of the school's beginning. The present day school is represented with a story of our school as it is now. Also included is the conclusive proof that the class of 1982 is the 100th greduating class. This year's book has a horoscope to humorously prophecize the future. In keeping with what we hope to be a new tradition, we includ- ed color senior pictures. The cover symbolizes the fading, yet im- portant past. The 1982 yearbook staff hopes that this book will help you recall the memories of the past year. We constructed a book that will be enjoyed by all the students of H.H.S. Mary Pelkey Editor-in-chief
