Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1981 volume:

4 c We've traveled a long, long time together. And there have been a lot of good things on the way. But now it's almost time for leavin'. And the things I feel inside are very hard to say. But it's time for moving on my friend. Hold back all the tears and sorrow. It finally is time to go our separate ways. And I want to wish you well, my friend As we search for new tomorrows. Go as you must, but please, Don't forget the yesterdays. Remember the dreams we dreamed together, All of the joys we shared in getting to today. Now, just one time before you leave me, Reach out and take my hand and help me walk away. For it's time for moving on, but Don't forget the yesterdays. Words from the song IT'S TIME FOR MOVIN' ON by Don Besig. Copyright MCMLXXVIII, Shawnee Press, Inc.. Delaware Water Cap, PA 18327. Used with per- mission. Davidson ACTIVITIES 127 FINLRND Linda and friend I spent the summer of 1980 in the town of Porvoo, Finland. The town has about 20,000 people. It is locat- ed about 70 miles east of Helsinki, the capital of Fin- land. I stayed with the Luosma family which consisted of my Father, Risto; my Mother, Eeva-Maija; a brother Ossi, and two sisters, Anne and Ulla. Most summers in Finland the temperature ranges in the 50's and 60's. I was fortunate, however, because the weather was in the 70's and 80's. They had the nicest summer they have had in over 100 years. Most of our time was spent outdoors because of the warm weather. The short nights also made it possible to be outside later at night. At one point in the sum- mer you could still see the sunset at 11 P.M. If you re- mained awake until about 3-4 A.M. you could see the sun rise again. I have many fond memories of Finland that will be with me always. I hope to always keep in touch with my family and friends there. I would like to thank the A.F.S. for sending me to Finland. At this time the new editors knew for the first time that they had the respon- sibility of preparing and putting together the 1981 Yearbook. We all looked at each other and wondered if we could do it. Beginning the latter part of June 1980 we began our endeavors. It lasted until March 7, 1981. We learned about page makeup, cropping, bleeding and many other terms of the yearbook. Pictures, copy, and deadlines became a part of our lives. Now it is over. We learned a lot and had fun, but only with a lot of work. We feel it was worth it, and we know you will enjoy the pictorial review of your 1980-81 year. The 1980 season was special also in that Hornell took Section V to court as a result of losing the Section V championship. Hornell lost because of a protest brought against them after the game had been completed and actually won by Hornell. The Hornell school officials, however, decided to withdraw and discontinue the lawsuit after consultation with other Hornell officials. ADS 223 It's time for moving' on —but even so, we must remember what brought us to today. Hard work and determination along with all of the good times have combined to make our years at Hornell High times we will always remember. The editors of the 1981 Maple Leaf have created an entirely new and unique book to help you relive these past years. Using the Rainbow as our theme, we have tried to bring more color and life into the book. For the first time the senior formals are in col- or. The divider pages each represent a color of the spectrum. We tried to modernize the book by changing the underclassmen section with the use of tooling lines. Our cover was designed to portray the idea that we, as seniors, will soon look to the fu- ture for our riches, not necessarily gold, but many times intangibles such as lasting friendships. As you leave H.H.S. I hope that you will look back on these pages and remember what made the Class of '81. Follow Your Rainbow! Julie Stewart Editor-in-chief
