Hults, Mr. J. Fortuna. Being away from home and living in a different country is certainly a difficult and interesting experience. The way of life in Ethiopia is quite different from the life in the United States. I had a pretty hard time in adjusting my life to the new surroun- dings. I wasn’t surprised when I got to see the changes here since I expected to find so many different things. The one thing that I didn’t expect was the weather. When I first went to school, I had a little difficulty in understanding the pupils. But, this problem didn’t last very long. Before I came to the United States, I heard many different things about it. I tried to forget everything I had heard because I wanted to find out what the real things in the country are. Of course, I noticed many things are different from what I had heard. My first impression of the United States is the people. How nice it is living with such sociable people. I can say that most of my problems are solved by the people here. I think living with the different families helped my experience a lot. I realized even two families in the same country vary in many ways. Generally speaking, it was after Christmas when I found most things more interesting. It is very nice for the AFS to give students opportunities of learning about different countries. I hope my experience in the United States will help me in my future life. Fetlework Captures Our Hearts Fetlework Siefu 40 41 Ann Goes to Morocco 42 This past summer, I spent ten weeks with the Amrani family in Fes Morocco, North Africa. Adapting to a new society (pace of life, food, clothes, customs, and language) is indeed a rewarding and enlightening ex- perience. Since Morocco is a male dominated socie- ty, it was an asset having a host brother. Na- jib was an eager, young student, and a bit more broadminded than most girls. This gave me a chance to see and experience more. Because Morocco is an underdeveloped and uneducated country, everything is bas- ed on TRADITION! Life is a bit slower there. People don’t concentrate on being places on time. Everything is relaxed. From noon until 4:00 p.m., all work stops. The people rest in the 120 degree heat, then resume work until late at night. The food is very basic, con- sisting of brown bread, semolina, melons, and mint tea, the national drink. In my journeys, I found that the people were most hospitable, warm, happy, and friendly. This was good, and eased a new- comer. However, at times, they were so hospitable that they would get offended easi- ly, (like not taking a glass of tea). Again, this reflects the tradition. Although Morocco is now independent, they have several troubles. There are beggars lining the streets, poor getting poorer, and rich getting richer. However, there were the lighter times too. I had my first experience at a hamem, (an old lady thought I was deaf and dumb, so she bowed to Allah to give me speech and hear- ing. Actually, I hadn’t mastered the language yet). I also experienced getting lost while mountain climbing, and having mis- understandings to a culture clash. Through all this I learned more from my many mis- takes; I came back with a different perspec- tive about the world and my surroundings. I learned to appreciate my community, and especially my family for all they have given me. Mohammed Najib Joutey Amrani was my host brother. We grew to be very close. He was the only one who spoke English. He was very intelligent. Najib was a very good gymnast, and a conscientious worker. I think he knew more about the U.S. than I. Najib was interested in my welfare, however he was not dominating. He let me see the good and the bad aspects of his country. With the diligent assistance of our staff members, we have put together a yearbook which we feel reflects upon one of the most important and challenging stages of our lives. A multitude of happy, unforgettable, and sometimes embarrassing memories were compiled to construct the 74 Maple Leaf. Without the continuous guidance and dedication of our advisor, Mr. Besig, this year- book would have been just an idea. Countless hours and unlimited patience were man- datory from all, for meeting deadlines and ac- complishing our goal of “putting it all together”. 232 Our thanks to the Evening Tribune foi letting us reprint numerous pictures “A picture paints a thousand words.. a yearbook captures a million... expressions tell their own story... the burden... the sorrow... the strife and... pain... and at the same time... the joy... the laughter... the relief and... happiness... a combination of ail these things... this is you and this is me... and this is life... at HORNELL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL day by day...
