HORNELL HIGH SCHOOL HORNELL, NEW YORK 1959 Maple Leaf The Senior Class Presents MR. CHARLES M. EDDY In every school there ore those who exemplify its char- acter, add to its lustre, and work hard without due recog- nition. In Hornell High School, we hove such a man in our teacher and yearbook advisor, Mr. Charles M. Eddy. Few students enjoy the privilege of knowing Mr. Eddy really well. As members of the yearbook staff, we have hod the opportunity to work with Mr. Eddy in a close relation- ship, to receive his help and guidance, and to enjoy his friendship. It is for this rea- son that the 1959 Maple Leaf is dedicated to Mr. Charles Eddy. 3 CO-EDITORS WITH GRADUATION WILL COME NEW FRIENDS, NEW ACTIV- ITIES, AND A NEW LIFE. YET OUR YEARS AT HORNELL HIGH WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN AS WE LOOK BACK ON OUR HIGH SCHOOL DAYS HERE, WE REMEMBER OUR FRIENDS, OUR TEACHERS, THE KNOWLEDGE WE ACQUIRED, AND THE GOOD TIMES WE ENJOYED. SHARE THESE MEMORIES WITH US, FOR BY THIS SHARING, THERE WILL BE GREATER JOY IN REMEMBERING. 4 , : - ' Our Superintendent, for his untiring efforts toward providing an urgently needed new school, deserves a place of honor in our 1959 MAPLE LEAF, 5 TO THE GRADUATES OF THE CLASS OF 1959 I OFFER MY SINCEREST CONGRATULA- TIONS. I HOPE THAT AS YOU LEAVE THIS HIGH SCHOOL, YOU WILL DEPART WITH A DEEPENED CAPACITY TO LEARN, AN INCREAS- ED ABILITY TO LISTEN, A NEW DEPTH OF AWARENESS, AND THE ANTICIPATION OF GREATER MOMENTS OF VISION. With the return of many lettermen, the Raiders did not have as successful a season as we expected. Due to the strong competition, they won only three games while losing five. Several of Hornell's losses were by slim margins, such as, the loss to Nichols Prep by only one point. Yet, for the most part, the boys made a good show in each game they played. Next season will be a rebuilding job for Coach Castiglione. The line will be weak due to the loss of many regulars to graduation. However, the back- field will be quite strong even though they will miss the services of All-Conference half-back, Sal Fiscina. Only a few men will be lost by graduation which means that next year the team will have a very successful sea- son. Our congratulations go to team captain LeRoy Boerner who is undefeated. These boys have demon- strated the sportsmanship and spirit that makes H.H.S. extremely proud of them. 96 Track Front Row: J. Pryor, J. Fisher, W. Pouly, R. Wott, R. Hammer, R. Corretto, R. Mead, J. Henry Young in the 880 was a sectional champion; a Hor- nell team broke the track record in the two mile relay at Elmira. George Connors came close to breaking our school's record in the 180 hurdles, while Dave Guenther set a school record of 21 feet 10 inches in the broad jump. With the added experience, the forecast for the 1959 track squad is favorable. 97 Baseball Front Row: Mr. Durso, Coach; AI Stook, S. Bobcock, R. Scott, P. Curtis, Mr. Picarillo, Coach; L. Simons, T. The Red Raiders of 1958 had a success- ful season. With a record of 6 and 5, they placed second in the Steuben AA Con- ference. More important than the record was the experience gained by the freshmen and sopho- mores of the squod. With these and with the help of this year's seniors, the team, captained by Sal Fiscina and Mike Hornbeck, shows a promising future.
