Dedication Miss Manila VanGelder There are in all professions some few people who ore so sincerely devoted to their work that it becomes their way of life. The teaching profession is no different. In 1925, a young lady who had just graduated from Albany State Teachers College began her career as on instructor of Latin. Twenty-seven years ago, this same teacher joined the faculty of Hornell High School, presumably to teach in the language de- partment. Much to her surprise however she became an instructor of mathematics. We the Seniors of H.H.S. feel that she has un- selfishly devoted her life toward the education and betterment of students in our school. Because of this it is with a great deal of admiration and respect that we dedicate the '58 MAPLE LEAF to Miss Marilla VanGelder.

Faculty Poge 6 Foreword No high school gives you an education. The best that any school can do is to provide you with the opportunity and encouragement to educate yourself. What is made of that opportunity depends largely upon you. Good teachers and a sound curriculum are fundamental. In a sense you may take them on faith — on the prestige and repu- tation already established. But what you need not take on faith is the spirit of a school — the atmosphere in which teachers and students ore brought together, the tra- dition and customs, the social life and acti- vities of its playtime hours. This spirit is likewise dependent upon you. To capture this spirit has been the aim of the '58 MAPLE LEAF. And so, in a sense of pride in all that our Alma Mater repre- sents, we present The Spirit that is Hornell High. Sports Poge 80 2 Contents Activities Poge 52

I hope that each of you will grab a handful of rainbows today, and even when trouble, despair, and disappointment knock on your door, be like the teakettle — even when you're up to your neck in hot water — go ahead, sing. And if you ever get to the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on with strength. Make your philosophy one that at midnight, is certain of the dawn. Congratulations to all of you, and may you have the greatest of blessings. Sincerely,
