The '58 Maple Leaf Published By The Senior Class Hornell High School Hornell, Ne York Faculty ________________________________Poge 6 Foreword No high school gives you an education. The best that any school can do is to provide you with the opportunity and encouragement to educate yourself. What is made of that opportunity depends largely upon you. Good teachers and a sound curriculum are fundamental. In a sense you may take them on faith — on the prestige and repu- tation already established. But what you need not take on faith is the spirit of a school — the atmosphere in which teachers and students ore brought together, the tra- dition and customs, the social life and acti- vities of its playtime hours. This spirit is likewise dependent upon you. To capture this spirit has been the aim of the '58 MAPLE LEAF. And so, in a sense of pride in all that our Alma Mater repre- sents, we present The Spirit that is Hornell High. Sports __________________________________Poge 80 2 Contents Activities___________________________________Poge 52 Dedication Miss Manila VanGelder There are in all professions some few people who ore so sincerely devoted to their work that it becomes their way of life. The teaching profession is no different. In 1925, a young lady who had just graduated from Albany State Teachers College began her career as on instructor of Latin. Twenty-seven years ago, this same teacher joined the faculty of Hornell High School, presumably to teach in the language de- partment. Much to her surprise however she became an instructor of mathematics. We the Seniors of H.H.S. feel that she has un- selfishly devoted her life toward the education and betterment of students in our school. Because of this it is with a great deal of admiration and respect that we dedicate the '58 MAPLE LEAF to Miss Marilla VanGelder. I hope that each of you will grab a handful of rainbows today, and even when trouble, despair, and disappointment knock on your door, be like the teakettle — even when you're up to your neck in hot water — go ahead, sing. And if you ever get to the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on with strength. Make your philosophy one that at midnight, is certain of the dawn. Congratulations to all of you, and may you have the greatest of blessings. Sincerely, In Appreciation We, os Seniors, ore very grateful for the guidance shown us by Mr. Donald Alderman, our Senior guidance director. His watchful eye and helpful hand have been instrumental in molding our high school programs and shoping our future. Many seniors could be found visiting Mr. Alderman throughout the week either for guidance or just a good friendly chat. The Senior year is a hectic one-—com- mittee meetings, play rehearsals, scholar- ship exams ond just about everything except homework. Speaking in behalf of the entire Senior Class we deliver our sincere gratitude to Mr. Kenneth Blakes- lee, class advisor. His friendly guidance and soft-spoken voice hove helped us many a time through the turmoil and confusion of our final year in H.H.S. The Maple Leaf Staff expresses its deep appreciation to Mr. Charles M. Eddy, faculty advisor of our book. By working with Mr. Eddy, we have found that publishing a yearbook is not as difficult as it might seem, but it is rather on enjoyable experience of work- ing together to do a job. His long hours of guidance have been the foun- dation of making our work and ideas a reality in the form of the '58 MAPLE LEAF. Mr. Guinane Mr. Adamonis Mrs. Olds How well we Seniors remember the unselfish efforts of our previous class advisors. To Mrs. Marie Olds who guided us through our confused freshman year, to Mr. Joseph Adamonis, our capable sophomore advisor, and to Mr. Richard Guinane who graciously helped us along in our junior year, we express our sincere appreciation. — u Ty Administration MR. No individual stars this year, but a team that worked hard and had plenty of the essential element called drive. The Raiders, definitely lacking in the height department, made up for it in hustle as they won eleven games while dropping only five. The capacity crowd that packed the gym on February 21, will probably never forget the eventful victory over C.N.S. which gave our boys a well deserved crack at the championship — or for that motter, it will be a long while before fans stop talking about the nerve-racking other ten victories as the squad pulled many a game out of the fire in th last remaining minutes. Swimming Team Coach ----------------------Mr. Paul Rohver Co-Captains _____________________loe Clancy Fred Cortese With nearly a full squad returning this year, Hornell High mermen enjoyed a successful winter season as they defeated Jefferson High of Rochester and Geneva High School. Outstanding and consistent winners included Fred Cortese, Stan Mills, and Bill Tsibulsky. Also in the winning spotlight were sen- ior, Steve McHale, Joe Clancy, and Larry Mead. You might call the swim-team squad, the squad we never see — but wish we could, as the facilities do not permit our witnessing another H.H.S. team in action. 92 First Row, Left to Right: C. Emery, W. Boys' Bowling The Boys' Bowling League consisting of 8 teams with 3 men on o team bowled Wednesdays this year during the winter months at the Seneca Bowling Lanes. The top averages were higher than they had been in the previous three years. The mem- bers of the team, Albright, Crandall, Kelly, Riten- burg, and Remchuk won for the 10th straight year at Cornung and placed third in the sectional at Rochester. Mr. Hover, advisor, spent much time and effort in helping the boys improve their averages. The boys are grateful for his willingness to assist. Left to Right: W. Ritenburg, R. Remchuk, J. Guild, J. The 1957 baseball team had a fair season in the Steuben AA conference. The Red Raiders tied for first place with Corning Northside and Corning Free Academy. All three schools had identical two win, two loss records. In the sectional playoffs Hornell de- feated C.F.A. Northside, however, whipped the Raiders to take the sectional champion- ship. During the season the Red Raiders were sparked by its three graduating seniors; Jerry Crowe, and co-captains Jim Barillo and Bob Williams. Having lost but these three, the Raiders are looking forward to a winning team for '58. REGULAR SEASON SCORES Hornell 12 0 C.N.S. Hornell 2 7 Canisteo Hornell 8 4 C.F.A. Track Coaches: Mr. Castiglione ond Mr. O'Neil Although Hornell High's 1957 Track Team was weak in distance events, the sprints and field events carried the squad through a successful season. The team placed second in the Steuben County Meet at Bath. Also the squad finished third in the big annual Wellsville Spring Day Meet. Last spring's team flashed a very bright outlook on the future as nearly the entire squad was made up of freshmen and sopho- mores. These new boys placed first in five out of five events at the Olean Relay Carnival where they met a great deal of competition from Pennsylvania schools. An interesting side light of the 1957 season was that three school records were set. Jim Patti set a school mark in the 100 yard dash of 10.1 seconds while winning that event at the County Meet. Dave Guenther's winning jump of 21 feet 6 inches at the County Meet established another school rec- ord. Finally, Roger Lorow set a third school mark by running the 180 yard low hurdles in 22.4 seconds at the Wellsville Spring Day Meet. Girls' Advanced Bowling League Left to Right: M.
