V A MESSAGE • • • FROM THE STAFF This year has been one of the great- est and most eventful years of our lives. Although it has meant many hours of hard work, our senior year has also given us wonderful times. After grad- uation, we won't be seeing very much of our classmates again; thus we hope that this yearbook will retain many memo- ries of “swell times and close friend- ships in Hornell High. Harold “Squirt Lyke 3 My brief remarks are intended as a sincere congratulation to the seniors of the Class of 1957, and also as a limited road map as you journey along the highway of life and success. If you want to be sure of not failing on your journey, then determine to be a success. Robert J. Johnson 4 DEDICATION NELLIE M. DICKINSON For your patience, friendliness, and understanding as our teacher and coun- selor, we dedicate to you, this book. The Staff 5 MATHEMATICS Rolph J. Peltz Marillo Von Gelder Richard M. Lovonier Virginia Cullen 8E-80P'S FACULTY FABLES Once upon a wintry day, a young man named Bobbie Von Dorsey kissed his sweet- heart, a lovely young thing named Marilla Mattoon, good-bye and set out to check his traps in a nearby Grove. He promised her he'd return before she set his supper, but Schurr enough he was late in coming and girls Durso worry. So little Marilla set out for the nearby Grove to find her sweetheart. She was Schurr someone had Dunham wrong. She was right, too, for coming upon him she sow a huge figure beating him. Don't hurt him Hussong of a gun , she cried, Have a Hartman . At this the villain turned to Lasher, but she Neild and begged him to leave them alone. O'Neil all you want, I'll leave you alone any- way , cried the villain, for he knew they'd be Snowden for days. Once alone, the two sweet- hearts strained their ears for hope of hearing someone coming to their rescue, but they could hear only the Repple of the wind in the trees. Good old Humphrey Pennyworth Fennel- ly found them with the aid of his Cornue (for all you cats who don't dig, that's Latin for horn) and his faithful Scott (ch) terrier Rohver. He threw my Peltz in the Eddy , Bobby cried. So Humphrey Castiglione and recovered the Peltz. Here, he said, you take my Olds and about Furlongs from here, you'll find the Sheriff. Tell him to send a man out here to help me track the crook. I'll Stadelman comes . Thanks said Bobbie. Don't thank me, thank yer girl. A Gallegher is pretty handy to have around , said Humphrey. So Bobbie and Marilla walked away with the setting sun falling gently on the bright Sheheen of the Peltz. The moral of this story is; Hoover you are, let me Adamonis you. If you are like the afore mentioned couple, you may be able to Livonier love, but you'll never make the Hritz and you'll never keep up with the Jones.' Therefore, when your fifteen kids start screaming M.A.H. and the bill col- lectors are Cullen on the phone, remember, Alderman in the world can have money, but you hove to work like the Dickinson to find a sweetheart. So no matter how tough life seems, even if you're a Coleman in a mine, things could be worse, you could be a teacher! RHYTHM ROUND UP Walk Hand In Hand....................... R. Alderman Secretary Pat Smith 52 STUDENT COUNCIL Headed by Donald Kelley, this year's Student Council successfully completed a variety of projects with the help of the stu- dents and faculty. Buses were sent to the out-of-town games during football and basketball seasons. This stimulated school spirit to a very high peak. At each home basketball game, the Student Council attempted to create even more in- terest in the games by giving a sportsmanship award to a member of the opposing team who demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and determination during the game. The Council's largest project was the pur- chase of glass backboards for the gymnasium. These will enable fans to view athletic events more easily. To help pay for the backboards, in April the Council sponsored a talent show which made it possible for the goal to be reached. All in all, it was a very successful year for the H.H.S. governing body—the Student Council. | Advisor President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Sgt. at Arms 153 Front Row: R. Taylor, M. Glynn, J. The Red Raiders wound up the 1956 gridiron season with a six win— one loss—one tie record. The boys, many of whom returned after a mediocre season last year, played both a beautiful offensive and defensive game to remain undefeated in the West Central Conference. Don Kelley, Dave Guenther, Art Roselli, and Alan Stook were selected for the West Central All Conference team, while Jerry Secondo, Butch Locke, Jerry Crowe, and Pete Brundu were included in the second team. Mr. Castiglione and his boys are to be commended for bringing us the co-championship West Conference title. 71 First Row: Left to Right: Mark O'Neil (coach), W. Connors, J. Kull, I. Pryor, R. Coach...................Mr. Dick Guinane The Junior Varsity wound up the 1957 season with a terrific record of 16 wins and only one loss. The squad lost their opener to Painted Post and then went on a sixteen straight winning streak. The height and speed of these boys give us a bright picture of future years of H.H.S. basketball. After a poor start, the J.V. squad, coached by Mr. O'Neil, came through to win their last two games. The Little Raiders por- trayed much spirit and many newcomers showed much promise. We predict an even brighter season for the 1957 squad. IA WEE BASKETBALL Front Row: Left to Right: J. McGrath, J. Prior, P. Babcock, S. Fiscina, S. Babcock, M. Barillo, V . Crowe. Second Row: A. VARSITY BASKETBALL Co-Captains...........Gary Crowley, Don Kelly Manager ..............Phil Hartley, Ken Leith Coach .....................Mr. Elliot Hartman With a ten win, eight loss record for the 1957 season, the Hornell Red Raiders had its first winning season in four years. The team paced by such stalwarts as Jerry Crowe and Cary Crowley showed much spirit and desire to win. Crowley set a new high school indivdual scoring record for the most points in a single game with 37 points against Batavia Although next year's squad will lack height, we predict their speed and drive will bring an even better season on the court. 73 The loss of nine seniors and return of only four lettermen for the 1956 Soccer sea- son, left Coach Paul Rohver with a very in- experienced squad. But the team, although it lost all of its games, showed much spirit and willingness to fight. The games were hard fought and many were heartbreakers with the Raiders losing by only one goal. With many new freshmen and sopho- mores gaining experience, we look forward to a very successful 1957 season. Coach Asst. Coach Front Row: C. Hoyt, R. Wilkins, B. Pauley, B. Carroll, J. Wachter, L. The Raiders won three matches and lost seven. Ken Lewis, Leroy Brenner, and Melvin Perry sparked the team's hopes by becoming Bi County champions. With the young squad shaping up well, we expect a very successful 1957 season. WRESTLING Front Row, Left to Right: J. Kuhn, B. McNelis, J. Coddington, L. Boerner, T. Hanrahan Second Row: A. Coach—Mr. Picarillo The 1956 Hornell baseball team had a good season this spring. The Raiders, competing with Corning Free Academy and Corning Northside for the A Double A county cham- pionship, were successful in winning this honor and were thus eligible for the sectional. After a hard battle, Hornell lost the sectional, by one run, to East Rochester High School. Coach — Mr. Mark O'Neil The 1956 track team, with a large turnout this year, had a fairly successful season. In the triangular track meets, the Raiders lost the first one and won the second. The team also placed second in a quadrangular meet with Corning Free Academy, Wayland and Painted Post Central Schools. Also in the 1956 Wellsville Spring Outing, Hornell, in competition with twelve schools, placed third. Front Row: A. Roselli, D. Guenther, W. Crowe, J. Gongemi, S. Simpson, M. Spitulnik, C.
