Bacon: Of Truth Because it is so important in our daily lives and because it is a symbol of the Guidance, Knowledge, Creation, and Good Will we have received from Hornell High School, the staff has selected LIGHT as the theme for the 7955 Maple Leaf. We sincerely hope the way of the future will be as brightly illuminated as have been these unforgettable four years. Students, Teachers, Citizens all, School and Community do recall— Thirty-six years devoted and true And so, Mr. Dodge, our yearbook to you. The close of this school year will see the passing of the Light of Guidance from the hands of our Superintendent, Harrison S. Dodge, to our Principal, Sidney MacArthur. The Hornell Public Schools have had the privilege of having Mr. Dodge's excel- lent supervision since 1919. During these years of Mr. Dodge's guidance, the present high school building was erected and the Lincoln School rebuilt. Com- pleted were the additions to the Bryant, Columbian, Irving and Lincoln Schools. This year Mr. Dodge is retiring after serving school and community for 36 years. Next year, Principal Sidney MacArthur will assume the position of Superinten- dent. Mr. MacArthur has become well known in the community for his faithful efforts to improve our school. We look forward with anticipation to Mr. Mac- Arthur's future success as our new Superintendent. Congratulations Harrison S. JOHN HENRY NEW MAN STUDENTS Last Will and Testament We, the class of '55, of the City of Hornell, County of Steuben, and State of New York, being of legal age and sound mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this our Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and annulling any and all will or wills by us made heretofore: To the Class of ’56—Our financial difficulties To Mary Jo—Carol Cole's ability to talk To Elsa Guenther—Marion Stevens's voice To anyone that will take them—Pat's plaid shoe laces To Eddy's brother—Locker 36 To Ken Pratt—Jim Brown's spot as soloist To Gary Green—John Watt's height To Art—Bob Hanrahan's car To Mr. Peltz—New suit, size 40 To Miss Van Gelder—A birthday cake every year To the entire student body in '56—A principal with Mr. MacArthur's characteristics To Steve Simpson— Weasel's ability to play pool To Mr. Adamonis—A better personalized typing class To Mrs. Repple—Another Sth ward gang To Steve Burdette—Roman Poklinkowski's build To future students of Mrs. Humphrey—A thousand maga- zine articles Reflections We, the proud seniors of Hornell High School, review our last four years with fond memories. As talented freshmen, we began our Four Year Plan for revolutionizing the school. For the first time in the history of H.H.S. freshman day was held before all other class days. With the help of Miss Gallagher, we presented, without a doubt, the finest Freshman Day ever given to the students of H.H.S. As dynamic sophomores, our fame steadily increased. We explained thoroughly, in our class play, the structure of the atom to the other ignorant classes. Scholastically, we broke all existing records set by previous classes. Teachers considered it a privilege to teach us. As mature juniors, we presented a panel show for the first time in history. The Junior Prom was the big event of this year. Also dur- ing this year, we supplied the school with the Student Council President. And now we are seniors, the envy of the school. Last November we presented 3 highly success- ful play entitled The Divine Flora. This year Mr. Blake- slee has had the honor of working with the illustrious class of 1955. Since our revolution has now been completed, we soon will be leaving the hallowed halls of Hornell High. It is with deep regret that we say good-bye to the teachers and students who have shown such kindness towards us during our high school career. Many of our fondest memories will remain here, where we grew from immature boys and girls to mature men and women. 16 Top Honors Sheila A. Smith Valedictorian ■ Hogu., W.-ilY Magi' '. Prudence A. In every corner lurked Danger. Then, before you could say Two for the Money, I spotted a Red Skelton. I screamed, for it was My Favorite Husband. I called the police. Howdy Doody, said the sergeant. I replied, I've Got A Secret. I told him and he said he would get an Omnibus and be right over. The Medic also arrived. The Man Behind The Badge began asking me questions. Then he asked, Are you wearing 'Red Buttons' on your coat? Fearfully, I replied, yes. He had me. I admitted as he led me away, I Led Three Lives. We have worked our way through four long years of study, And all the while our hearts were young and gay. We have had our share of laughs and fun together, And also times when he have felt quite sad. We have had some passing marks mixed with the fifties, But all in all it hasn't been so bad. Now we realize that soon we'll all be leaving, Our Alma Mater held us fond and true. We feel proud and honored here at our assembly, And know that we will miss the red and blue. 37 -HI-LITE5- MS Stuart m rry Dicktcri (vlvia SHtR ro G rry Dipiv if Ce) °° ✓Ca Jc?- iSLTI’ _?,M A fe fwcreor e. Dean L. Harrington, Director The purpose of the band is to instruct and stimulate the students' interest in classical music and to provide music for school and other public functions. During February the band took a trip to Boston where they played a concert for the National Music Educators Conference. While on the trip they enjoyed tours of the city of Boston and Rockefeller Center, courtesy of the Erie Railroad. However, it is not to be said that all of the band's time was spent in pleasure, for many long months of work and countless extra rehearsals were required before the concert could be played. Earlier in the year the band played a concert before a joint Rotary and Kiwanis meeting. It also enter- tained the patients at the Mount Morris T. B. Sani- torium. The members of the band and students of the school especially appreciate Mr. Harrington's effort. It is mainly througn his effort and determination that the band remains as one of the best in the state. In carrying out this func- tion, the Council strives to unify the students' interests by bringing them together through representatives. Among the Council's many worthwhile proj- ects was the promotion of school social activi- ties and after-game dances. It also sponsored buses, making it possible for students to at- tend out-of-town games. During the course of the year the council made plans to revise the method of electing officers, to improve the Letter Award System, and to carry out a successful Student Council Day. Through the efforts of the representatives, each school day was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and each school week with the state prayer. The biggest project of the year was the rais- ing of money for the Save the Children Fed- eration project. The money raised will pro- vide school children in foreign countries with school supplies, clothing and other essentials. Table in foreground, clockwise—K. Philbrick, D. Wolfanger, G. Twenty-six of the school's student body were elect- ed in January as recognition for their efforts to meet the objectives: To create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimu- late a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership and to encourage the development of character. During the year the members carried out an exten- sive program to give service to their fellow students and to the community. The chapter again shared the Christmas spirit by decorating a tree over the school entrance. The members distributed the report cards and main- tained the honor roll board. Five seniors were elected to participate in the an- nual General Aptitude test. Earlier in the year the chapter attended the induction ceremony of new members at Canisteo Central School. As the second semester began, plans were made for an Area Leadership Conference. Approximately twenty schools participated. The boys on the team, most of whom returned after undergoing a losing season last year, used their knowledge and experience to turn out a fine team. Hornell fans were particularly appreciative of the victory over C.F.A., our traditional rivals. Three players, Bob Coogan, Mike Goth and Jim Kull were selected for the West Central All Conference Team. Many others were included in the second team and honorable mention selections. These boys, their coaches and all the other players are to be congratulated for bringing the co-cham- pionship title to H.H.S. The Junior Raiders showed lots of spirit and drive on the field this season and the result was a fine record of three wins in four games. The coaches, Mr. House and Mr. O'Neil, produced a well-balanced team which proved to be outstanding, both offen- sively and defensively. In four games the Hornell team made more than four times as many points as their opponents and on two occasions held the op- position scoreless. Many of these boys will be on the varsity team next year and surely the experi- ence they gained as J.V.'s will be used to good advantage. We hope that all Hornell teams in the future show as much enthusiasm as this one has. 66 JAYVEE SCORES Hornell Batavia . .27 1 Hornell Painted Post .30 1 Hornell Batavia .... 38 ' Hornell Northside Hornell CFA Hornell 41 Hornell 77 Hornell Northside Hornell C.F.A 38 I Hornell t, A §1 Horn ! With only four boys leaving the team, the experience and know-how gained this year are sure to make next year's sea- son more successful in the win column. 67 Front row—J. Coddingfon, J. Lewis, E. Co-Captains Robert Burnside . . Manager Under the leadership of two new coaches, Mr. Paul Rohver and Mr. Charles Myers, the Raisers estab- lished a record which belied the actual abilities of the boys. There were many new Freshmen and Sophomores who had to be taught the game. While they were still learning, they were thrown into the line-up against more experienced opposition. When injuries hit the team in the middle of the sea- son, they seemed to lose their drive. Then, with a full squad, they gave a good account of themselves in their last two games. Much credit should be given to Mr. Rohver and Mr. Myers for taking over the job of coaching a team in a sport which the coaches themselves were still learning. The H.H.S. Matmen added a winning season to the records of Hornell High this year. Although wrestling got off to a late start, the team devel- oped rapidly and ten boys earned varsity letters. This record shows four wins: two over Alfred-Al- mond and two from Wayland. The team's 2 losses came in close matches with Wellsville and Painted Post. Mr. Podrasky, through his excellent job of coaching, produced a rugged team with lots of drive. Because most of the team will be returning next year, another winning season can be expected. 68 Baseball Track The 1954 baseball team finished a strong second in county competition after a successful season both at home games and out-of-town games. Under the expert eye and guidance of Mr. Strassner as head coach and Mr. House as assistant, the team was developed with only five of last year's lettermen. The efforts put forth by the team and their coaches were very satisfactory. With the experience the underclassmen gained by playing this year, Hor- nell High will have a first-rate team next year. Despite a small turnout, the 1954 track team can be proud of its achievements. With the help of Mr. Castiglione and Mr. Myers, the members of the team placed consistently in all the meets. At the important county meet, first place honors were won by the 880-yard relay teams consisting of Jack White, Jim Kull, Mark McGregor and Ed Marks, and by Jim Fisher in the 440-yard dash. George Prior and Louie Arcieri also were first in their events. These seven boys helped represent Steuben County in the sectionals at Rochester. The members held three sports nights, sponsored the county badminton tournament and provided a demonstration of basketball skills for an area group of Physical Education Teachers. The club sponsored the Girls' Beginner and Advanced Bowling Leagues, held three mixed double tournaments with the boys' league and attended the County bowling tournament in Corning. The league sent its eight highest average bowlers to the county tournament held at Corning. There the boys won three of four possible honors. The doubles team composed of Fred Jensen and Jim Remchuck placed first in the county. Tom Raish, Dale Pollinger, George Padden, Marion Brewer, and Tom Rink, composing the five-man team, won this division for Hornell High for the eighth consecutive time.
