EX IN APPRECIATION Two people will forever appear on our list of unforgettable advisers. They are MR. ALDERMAN and Miss NEILD. To Mr. Alderman we owe a debt of gratitude far beyond our ability to express. Never has he been too busy to talk over with us plans concerning our senior activities. He has devoted many in- school and out-of-school hours to our class that our Senior Day, our MAPLE LEAF, and our graduation might hold pleasant memories for us. As adviser of the MAPLE LEAF, Miss Neild has faithfully helped us in the production of a yearbook of which We are proud. Without her to lead the way, work on our annual would have been far more difficult. To these two teachers We extend our whole-hearted thanks and appreciation. We realize that without their assistance we could never have achieved the high goals at which We have aimed. .4. Miss MARYANN GALLAGHER DEDICATION It is with our deepest gratitude that we, the Senior Class of Hornell High School, dedicate the 1951 MAPLE LEAF to MISS MARYANN GALLAGHER. In many ways she has contributed to making our days in Hornell High the happiest we have ever known. Under Miss Gallagher's patient and enthusiastic guidance the Volcano has been recognized not only in Hornell High but throughout the state as one of the best school newspapers. We shall always remember Miss Callagher's efforts in making each issue of the Volcano an issue of which we could be proud. However, it is not only her work with the paper that has endeared her to all of us. Her sparkling personality, her friendly smile, and her kindly manner have meant much to usg for they have shown us that she is indeed our friend. In dedicating our yearbook to MISS GALLAGHER, we, the Class of 1951, are in a small way expressing our appreciation to her for all that she has done for us. .5. What Would H. H. S. Faculty We, the Class of l95l, extend to the nlemhers of the faculty of Hornell High School our sincere appreciation for their untiring efforts and continual interest in our class. We shall long rememher their patience and kindliness, for our years in Hornell High would not have heen so pleasant without their friendly help. Throughout our four years, the faculty has, at all times, cheer- fully taught us and guided us on the right path. The advisers espe- cially have heen most helpful in cooperating with us on class days. The faculty has given much to us-ee-far more than we perhaps now real ize. l.ong after we have left the halls of our Alma Mater, we shall recall the many mcmhers of this cooperative faculty and thank each of them again for showing us the way during our four years of high school. .9. iA, ' , ' Y :gf X ' x V sffluclla mis How Could You Forget? Sm-ated, Left to Right-Mr. Altlornmn, Eliznheth Kightlinger, Carol Dee, Thomas NVeyand, .huns-s Stewart. Class History Dear Jim, lt's almost time for graduation again, only this year il's different. This year it's our class, the Class of '51, that's graduating. lt seems only yesterday that we were freshmen, carrying light schedules and having lots of fun. Remember how proud Miss Hussong was of her freshmen that year? Then, as now, we were a brilliant, witty, but very mystified class. Remember how we used to wonder if we'd ever be seniors? The fall of '11-8 found us a step nearer that lofty goal, That was one of our best years-a year of lots of work and fun in clubs and sororities. Miss Benning, our wonderful adviser, helped us produce our assembly with our own class talent. What a play that was! When we at last became juniors, we were really proud. Remember the fun We had ordering class rings and getting ready for the big event of the year-our Junior Prom? It was a perfect dance with a beautiful queen presiding. Toward the end of that year, we started to think about our future plans. As always, Miss Harrower was right there to help us. Finally, we became Hlordlyw seniors and started the last short year. Of all our years, this has been the busiest and best. First, there was the Hurry over senior pictures, then the yearbook got underway. Before we knew it, there were senior committees, cards and announcements to be ordered, plans to be made for Senior Day, and our very first-our very own-ball. Now, our last days in H. H. S. are fading fast away. Soon, we shall march down the well-trodden aisle and take our places as honored but slightly sad graduates. Your classmate, t6MARCE s13. This year the clulm accomplished much in achieving these high standards. An impressive induction ceremony was held on December 15. At that time twenty seniors and twelve juniors were tapped for menilnership. ln an effort to encourage higher scholarship, the Honor Society maintained the honor hulletin hoard each month. This, memhers hoped, would stimulate students to strive for honor marks. ln addition to donating time and Inoney to the Red Cross and other charitahle organizations. the cluh conducted a polio fund drive. However, National Honor Society is not all work. The social calendar included several social evenings, a hanquet ill the spring, and a picnic at Stony Brook at the end of the year. Ever on the alert to help, these active girls packed a Thanksgiving basket and sponsored a clothing drive for needy children. They also collected old felt hats and silk stockings for veterans at the Bath Hospital. To finance their projects, members held a social one bright Friday night. This, well as their many other at-tivities. was a great success. One of the best fed and most enthusiastic groups in school is the Beta Hi-Y. Convening at their bi-monthly dinners, the members have tried this year to follow more closely the original purpose of the Hi-Ygthat is, to aid other groups in supporting worthwhile school projects. ln view of the present international situation, the club has corresponded with former members of H. Their new adviser, Miss Park, has been a favorite with the girls. ln ilu- fall. the club admitted new members. sent dele- gates to the llorizon Club Council, and helped with the annual Camp Fire Bazaar. Later, the girls made plans for the liigliliglu of the year the convention held in Reading, Pennsylvania. Yes. the Senior llorizon--a fine lot of girls -has eer- tainly been a busy group. Few clubs can boast such an enviable record of service as the Y. E. Club. Besides being responsible for movies, throughout the year, the club demonstrated the use and operation of equip- ment to interested parents and teachers. A photographic exhibit was also held, awards being given to the best picture in each of several classifications. The photographic staff added materially to the collection of photographs of school activities and also to darkroom equipment. We can be proud of an organization which has added so much to the school as the V. E. Club has. Front ltow, Left to Right: M. Ilopkins, N. Spuuldiug, K. Kelly, Y. Murtz, C. llorton, N. Arnold.
