As juniors, we found in him an adviser whose guidance we valued highly. At that time, his interest in us supplied the encouragement we needed. DoNAi.n A1.m:RMAN It seems literally ages ago since we, the Senior Class of IQ49. entered Hornell High School as timorous freshmen, only too aware of our recent experiences in gram- mar school and our lack of knowledge in our strange new surroundings. With the advent of the next school year. we found ourselves sophomores-fgaining in poise. understanding, and knowledge. as well as in age. The months flew by swiftly, and the new Junior Class emerged as clever, resourceful, and gay a group as any teacher could dream of. Now. we have advanced to the status of seniors. How different a position we hold now from that which we held three years ago! As seniors. we are alnlefif we wish-to do all the boasting. bragging, and upushing around -of course. we never dol Yet this gaze into the past leaves us somewhat saddened. The realization comes that soon-God and the teachers willing-we shall leave H. H. S. Three years ago the idea of graduation seemed an idle dream, too far away to ever come true. Through much time and hard work, however, we shall soon see this dream realized. The good times we have enjoyed during these four years are soon to he terminated. Never- theless. no matter how far we go in later life. the happy memories of H. H. There over a voke we disvnss the happenings of the day, the haskethall or football game weire looking forward to, the clever sayings of our classmates-yes, even some of the lengthy assignments due the next day. The never silent juke boxes lend just the right background for these after school gatherings. After socials the Sugar Bowl seems to us to he the perfect spot for an after dance snavk. ltis crowdedg but if we're hungry enough and patient enough, we'll eventually find a booth with not more than six of our friends already in it. Anyway, itis fun just to stand around and talk with all the kids. Ah! school does have its points, but then there are many of us with diversified interests. ln spite of homework we can always find time for a dance or a game of ping-pong at the Fox Hole. On Thursday evenings, after cheering our favorite haskethall learns on to victory, we are sure to meet someone at the Fox Hole whois willing to he challenged to a game of ping-pong. Yes, we do have our individual hangonts. and we frequent them a lot. We wouldn't want to miss the fun we have at these plat-es-H no, not for anything! Those swiftly moving lines of trallic converging toward the library every Tuesday morning are the members of the Student Council hurrying to fulfill their weekly jobs of representing the student body. These members attend meetings regularly, participate in the big discussions of the day, and report to the students of H. H. S. the business transacted. These students realize that they have been elected by their classmates to represent them in the important matters which the council handles. This year the Student Council, under the able leadership of James Barnett, has had as its major proj- ect the purchase of a large clock for the front of our school building. Money for this colossal under- taking was raised by selling magazine subscriptions. The council hopes to secure sufhcient funds to have Hornell High Schoolii engraved on the clock. Moreover, the council is endeavoring to raise enough money with which to buy a canopy to be used in the gymnasium during dances. These are just a few of the outstanding projects the Student Council has undertaken during this war. No doubt, as the year goes on, the councilis program, too, will branch out. In order to induce students throughout the school to attain higher monthly marks, the names of students who earned first or second honors during each month were placed on the honor bulletin board purchased by the club last spring. This the club hoped would urge students who were lagging in their school marks to do better so that they. too, might see their names on the board. After the induction ceremony iII the latter part of November. old members wel- comed the newly selected students into the club. This party, the first social event of the season. was a great success. Just so the meetings during the year would not prove dull-they never werefe programs featured guest speakers, movies, and other entertainments. At the time of this writing, the club plaIIs a gala party for Christmas as well as a banquet during the Easter vacation. As a fitting climax for a very active year, a picnic will be held at Stony Brook Park in June. Certainly this variety of activities and social events should dispel the notion that the National Honor Society is an organization of all work and no play. Good times can be mixed with high scholarship, an admirable character, and leadership ability. Although this may sound little more than average. the eompetition was exeep- tionally keen. The team deserves mueh eredit for its fine spirit during the season in spite of set haeks.
