The pride of Hornell High we hold our own Its name our golden rule, XVork or play, in both we've ever known The progress of our school. Chorus Alma Mater, school that we esteem, Dear to us you seem, Hail thy honor, may it live in greatness, Bringing fame unequaled to H. H. S. THE SENIOR CLASS OE HURNEJLJL HIGH SCHOOL HORNELL, NEW YORK fffdf W W MW W PRESENTS THE 194S MAPLE LEAF MR. RALPH J. PEL DIEDJICA ll The Senior Class of Hornell High School proudly dedicates the 1948 MAPLE LEAF to MR. RALPH J. PELTZ. As adviser of the National Honor Society, Mr. Peltz symbolizes the aims of this organization--namely charac- ter, scholarship, leadership, and service. A gentlemanly manner, integrity, and perseverance are outstanding among his character traits. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa typifies his high de- gree of scholarship. Being head of the Mathematics Department and the founder and adviser of the Hornell Chapter of the Na- tional Honor Society is proof of his leadership. Willingness to give help to all who ask Whether dur- ing school hours or after school hours is evidence of his desire to serve. It is because of these outstanding qualities that the Senior Class dedicates its yearbook to Mr. Peltz. APPRIECJIATJIO MR. ALDERMAN ' MR. ALDRICH There comes a time when We discover that we accomplished our tasks only be- cause there are those who aided us. We now realize that Without Mr. Alderman, Mr. Aldrich, and Mr. Rohver We never could have completed our Senior Class ac- tivities and yearbook plans. And so We, the Class of 1948, wish to thank you for the many out-of-school hours you have devoted to us. ' ' 'Lf MR. Rox-ivan W7 fd TQ ADMINISTRATION ,..- I ft In ltiulnt Summ-1 Elxrmnrivh. ALDIiRMAN In the past four years, we, the class of 1948, have thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Hornell High School. We came into our Freshman year as shy, awed youngsters who looked up to the Seniors as gods and goddesses. When we started our Sophomore year a more grown-up feeling overtook us. Our Junior year came and went very quickly. Putting on the junior Prom, the Junior Assembly, and junior Day was so much fun that we shall never forget them. Now we are Seniors. That day in September, 1944. on which we entered H. H. S. seems far away. It is with a feeling of sorrow that we leave behind four years of work and fun in Hornell High School. We would like to thank all of those who have made our high school career so successful and enjoyable. 15 SENIORS-1948 JOSEPH AH EARN Hive!! Class Will We, the Class of 1948, being of sane mind and sound body, do bequeath this our last will and testament, to the following: To our teachers: The sad and depressing realization that they have lost the most intelligent, best behaved, best looking, and most industrious group of superior humanity ever to have graced the halls of H. H. S. To the Juniors: The dignity and wisdom of the class of 1948. To whom it may concern: A year's subscription to the New York Times for Mrs. Humphrey so she won t have to ask her class the news every day. Miss Bennett's ruler to Mr. Alderman and his mechanical drawing class. A pitchpipe for Mr. Cooke to aid him while singing in the halls. A soap box for Miss Dunham to stand on. Beefer's cigars to Freddie Penfold. Two handsome P. G.'s, Harold Tucker and Bill Livingston, to the female undergrads. You lucky gals! Bill Stewart's physique to Tom McCarthy. fAlthough he really doesn't need it.J A few feet of the surplus height of George Chromey, Francis Peterson, and Ted Celette to be evenly distributed among the smaller freshmen. An I Spy detective set to Mrs. Repple to aid her in tracing missing students. Kenny Koch's dog to Mary Ann Cosgrove. Franny Conway's dignity to Butch Ermy. Betty Hall's dancing ability to Ken Yergens. Romances between this year's cheerleaders and the team to next year's cheerleaders and team. A new address book to Neil Smith to replace the one he scribbled up last year. Norma Kul1's and Ginger Brown's vim, vigor, and vitality to the lifeless Junior class. Roberta Stillman's disc jockey job to Marilyn McClary. Mary Asquith's excessive blushing to the pale freshmen girls. 100 lbs. of charcoal to be deposited in the chemistry lab. to absorb the odor. This year the Student Council has undertaken its most ambitious project - that of earning enough money to buy a sound system for the school. To accomplish this, it sponsored a turkey raffle, a magazine subscription campaign and a musical variety show. It also received part of the proceeds from a dramatic play The Night of January 16th, which was presented by the Civic Theater. On Student Council Day, the officers took over the administrative posts, more fun, eh kids? Under the fine leadership of James Morey, President, this year's Stu- dent Council has kept up the high standards set by previous councils. RALPH J. PELTZ The professed object of the Hornell Chapter of the National Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of clIaracter in pupils of Hornell High School. In an effort to attain these splendid objectives the Chapter has sent out letters of congratulation to all students who are listed on the first and second honor roll. Not only did members of the Chapter appear on these same 'honor rolls, but they also participated in the National Honor Society General Aptitude Test as well as the Regents' Scholarship Examination. In conjunction with tlIe Three Mummers, the Chapter presented to Hornell and vicinity the Clare Tree Major Players offering The Merchant of Vcnicen and Macbeth The Chapter's annual Sports Nightl' featured an exhibition basketball game by the Rochester Royals against a local all-star aggregation. The Chapter took the lead in bringing such attractions to Hornell as a distinct service to the school and community at large. The Chapter also sent two C. A. R. E. boxes to Europe, one to a boy in the Nether- lands, the other to a girl in Greece. As this goes to press, tentative plans for the rest of the year include a possible ban- quet during Easter vacation, and a picnic at Stony Brook to climax a most active and eventful year. 49 43. This must be true according to the great number of boys who try out each season, especially at Hornell High School. The Hartman team had a fair season last Spring, Winning two and losing six. As in all sports baseball has its Winning and losing teams. Hornell was in the latter bracket last year. However, with many of the players coming back next year and bringing with them that valuable teacher, experience, and with a little more support from the students, baseball promises to be more successful for H.
