Dodge dedication SUPERINTENDENT HARRISON S. DODGE THE POST WAR ERA gl, IS is the wisdom and foresight that has carefully directed our course of study from the kindergarden through the high school. His is the kindly nature that is ever ready to consider the needs of the humblest student and plan for his adjustment in the society of our school environment. His is the contacting hand that places the activities of our school life into their proper association in the community. His is the watchful interest that is ever on the alert to assist individual students to obtain opportunities for educational ad- vancement. His has been the sympathetic spirit that has helped our young manhood in meeting the trying problems of this wartime period. We confidently believe that his personal experiences in the First World War as a soldier and Post-War educator will give him keener insight in dealing with the problems that will con- front our Alma Mater when the longed-for peace arrives. We trust that under his guidance, the Hornell Public School System will play a Worthy part in the better America of tomorrow. In sincere gratitude for all of this, We, the members of the class of nineteen hundred and forty-live, dedicate to our friend, Superintendent Harrison S. Dodge, this MAPLE LEAF and with it, our hearty wishes for his success in the Post War Era. appreciation MR. ALDERMAN, You have been loyal and fair to the Class of 1945 . Dur- ing our junior and senior years, you were always ready and Willing to help us with any problem great or small. You have made possible for us to recall with pride, gratitude and pleasure our life in H. H. S. A THE CLASS OF 1945. w fm' , gm! :N H' -1 OCjmlUl5TI'OJUOU HARRISON S. We were green freshmen-everyone pushed us around! We sat in back at assemblies. We didn,t rate. The next year wasn,t quite so bad. It was our turn to give the orders and the incoming Freshmen really took a lot of them. When we reached our Junior year, we were getting places. Remember that Junior Prom-dancing in a Snow Lodge! Now we have reached our Senior year and it has been a year that has provided us with a lot of memories for the future. How could anyone forget the Senior Ball! and that assembly! The Senior Banquet was also unforgettable. Now, when the time comes to leave, we suddenly realize what a wonderful time we've had and just as suddenly realize it's going to be very hard to leave. As the doors of the past four years close behind us and we begin to look ahead, we the Class of '45, know that Hornell High School has played a big part in preparing us for the World of Tomorrow. I track Hornell High School may well be proud of the track team that it produced last year under the able supervision of Coach Hartman. Al- though the number of men that turned out for track was not very repre- sentative of a school the size of Hornell High, enthusiasm for the sport showed a marked increase and it is hoped in the future that the sport will increase in popularity. Hornellis spikemen lost the first meet to C. F. A. but came in to their own by overpowering Dansville. In a return engagement with Dansville the meet finished in a tie. Bath was the next competitor and it fell before the onslaught of our track men. In the final and critical contest of the year the county meet held at Bath, Hornell came in third and many of her men were made eligible to go to the sectionals in Roch- ester. 78 baseball Co-Captains - CLAIR WESTCOTT, NEIL CRANDALL Coach - - - - E. M. HARTMAN Co-Managers - - C. DINARDO, R. FREELAND The Red Raiders had a fairly successful season losing only two games. Hornell's losses of the season were to a powerful Wellsville team and to the Painted Post nine. Due to the lack of transportation and too few teams for a county league, a baseball tournament was held at Bath with both Corning teams, Painted Post and Hornell enter- ing. Hornell nosed out Corning Northside, S-4, in the semi-finals, while Painted Post defeated Corning Free Academy. The following week in an error-studded game, a strong Painted Post team overcame a fighting Red Raider team, 7-2. Many of the underclassmen on the Hornell squad gained valuable experience which they will bring to this year's team. SCORES Hornell .... 10 Hammondsport S Hornell .,.. ..
