then reported to the Staff of Commander Amphibious Group TWO. ln 1954 he completed the General Line Course at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, lVlonterey, California. He next served two years as Aide and Flag Secretary on the Staff of Commander Training Command, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Norfolk, Virginia. After attending Armed Forces Staff College in 1956 he became Executive Officer in USS HAYNSWORTH lDD-700l and then was assigned to USS RANDOLPH lCVA-15l as Gunnery Officer From 1959 to 1961 he was Executive Officer NROTC Unit Dartmouth College after which he attended the U S Army Senior War College at Carlisle Barracks Pennsylvania ln July 1962 he assumed command of USS CORRY lDDR 817l a unit deployed with the Sixth Fleet Near the end of this 18 month tour he had additional duties as Commander Destroyer Division 262 His next assignment was on the Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon There he served as an action officer in the Operations Directorate J 3 for 16 months and during the next 14 months he was Command Center Operations Chief of one of the five teams which man the National Military Command Center on an around the clock basis He commanded USS CASTOR lASK1l from September 1966 to June 1968 He assumed command of HORNE lDLG 30l in Tonkin Gulf in July 1968 From HORNE Captain Lupia returned to Washington for duty involving special research CAPTAIN A. L. LUPIA COMMANDING OFFICER. USS HORNE DLG-30 26 July 1968 - March 1970 Captain LUPIA was born on February 14, 1921 in Jersey City, New Jersey and grew up in East Orange where he attended public schools. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1943 with a B.A. Degree and attended the Naval Reserve lVlidshipmen's School, New York where he was commissioned as Ensign in June of that year. During World War ll he served with amphibious attack forces in the Pacific Theater in USS BAXTER lAPA-94l as Boat Group Commander and Assistant Navigator and in USS PITT lAPA-223l as First Lieutenant and as Executive Officer. After completing Gunnery Officer's Ordnance School in Washington D.C. in 1947 he served in USS GOODRICH lDDR-831l for 34 months as Gunnery Officer, then as Operations Officer.
