A passage of Scripture was read, and the Lord’s Prayer recited together... The Chaplain read the Committal with strains of the Navy Hymn sounding in the background, while the Executive Officer scat- tered the cremains overboard. Following the Benediction, the Firing Squad fired three volleys smartly, and the mournful notes of Taps were played for the final farewell. The honorary pallbearers presented the American flag ... ... to the Commanding Officer on the family's behalf, and the ship resumed steaming on its westward course. 65
