Commanding CAPTAIN LAWRENCE LAYMAN Captain Lawrence LAYMAN, a native of Lebanon, Missouri, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign on 6 June 1952. His first assignment included duties as First Lieutenant and Damage Control Assistant in USS MARSHALL (DD-676). This was followed by a tour of duty as Executive Officer and Navigator of USS CAYUGA COUNTY (LST-529) form March 1954 to January 1956. Captain LAYMAN then reported to the Atlantic Fleet Mine Force as Executive Officer and Navigator of USS DIRECT (MSO-430). His next assignment was to the Bureau of Ships from April 1957 to February 1959 as Surface Assistant in the Applied Science Branch for Research and Development. He returned to the Pacific Fleet in April 1959 as Operations Officer of the commissioning crew of USS SOMERS (DD-947). Following a 19 month tour in SOMERS, he served a one year tour as Communications Officer on the staff of Commander Destroyer Flotilla SEVEN. Sub- sequently Captain LAYMAN was associated with the Naval Tactical Data System as a senior programmer at the Fleet Computer Programming Center Pacific until April 1964. Captain LAYMAN successfully completed the Nuclear Power Training Program in May 1965 earning qualification as a Reactor Operator. This school included six months of theoretical studies at Mare Island. California, and six months of operational training at Idaho Falls. Idaho. He returned to the Pacific Fleet Destroyer Force in June 1965 as Executive Officer of USS KING (DO-10). Prior to his detachment, KING twice deployed as a unit of the Seventh Fleet in support of Vietnam operations. Captain LAYMAN completed the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base. Alabama in June 1967. Captain LAYMAN commanded USS JOSEPH STRAUSS (DDG-16) from July 1967 to August 1969. As Commanding Officer, while serving with the Seventh Fleet, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V and the Republic of Vietnam Navy Distinguished Service Medal, 2nd Class. Also for this period JOSEPH STRAUSS was awarded the Mertorious Unit Commendation. Prior to assuming command of USS HORNE on 6 June 1975, Captain LAYMAN served for three years on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, responsible for Communications Research and Development. From August 1972 to May 1975 he served as Chief of Staff, Defense Communications Agency. Washington, D.C. Captain LAYMAN is married to the former Carmen Meyer of Jackson, Missouri. They have four children, Linda. Larry. Harry, and John. 4
