Movin' On Big wheels rolling, Big wheels rolling. Movin' On. Big wheels rolling, got to keep them going, Movin' On. The white line is a life line to a nation, men like Will and Sonny make it move. Living like a gypsy, always on the go , doing what they best know how to do . Jamming gears has got to be a fear, because men become addicted to the grind, it takes a special breed to be a truck driving man and a steady hand to hold the load behind. A good hot cup of coffee is waiting up ahead, good rhythm of the highway hums along. And men like Will and Sonny will just keep Movin' On. Big wheels rolling, Big wheels rolling, Movin' On. We realized that we are no longer children, but not yet the men and women we shall become. Everything we have known has slowly faded and come together as a mirage that we call memo- ries. We have wept because somewhere along the way we have lost, yesterday and we are movin' on to an unseen tomorrow. No one can emerge from a school year without being touched and changed by the journey he has made through time, classes, experiences, and the world. The world around us is changed by motion, activity, and movement. But how has the world changed us in thinking, caring and doing? Through these pages we pause to remember the good times before MOVING ON .. . . ff M24 -. 5525153 ii W., V f -A id, -, V, if 5 X-3' is wwf X' 'M J 1 ,5.5.5?f-V N 'W xr- HM ng .- -4, , fm 1'md0ww.j'f -www' 1 M. ,- Q gh 'Q M 5 w fi 1 ' u--kv W w iv gw: . . fx X N ' -. Haw ,-me fu A tradition is something that is handed down from the past, by our culture or our attitude. Horn Lake has many traditions, some that are noticed and some that are left unnoticed. Each one of us, in our way, makes a tradition at Horn Lake, whether it is being involved in school activities or blowing bubbles in class. Traditions will always exist just as long as Horn Lake and the love of its people are there. .1 17 The Value ofa Smile It costs nothing , but creates much . It enriches those who receive , with impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None are so rich they can get along without it, and none so poor but are richer for its benefits. It creates happiness in the home , fosters goodwill in a business and is a counter sign of friends. It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged , sunshine to the sad, and nature's best antidote for trouble . Yet it cannot be bought begged , borrowed , or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away. If someone is too tired to give you a smile, leave one of yours. For nobody needs a smile as much as those who have none to give. SO SMILE UNKNOWN Q . -1 vaqr vu. 4, lk ,M rl f a J, Hgwr , . 1 ,an-fi SMILE - A change of facial expression involv- ing a brightening of the eyes and an upward curving of the corners of the mouth with no sound, that may express amuse- ment, pleasure, tender affection , approval, restrained mirth, irony, derision or any other various emotions. WEBSTERS' DICTIONARY Thank God Fm a Country Boy ' Well, life on a farm is kind a laid back, ain't much an old country boy like me can't hack. It's early to rise, early in the sack: Thank God I'm a country boy. A simple kinda life never did me no harm, raisin' me a family and wor- kin' on a farm. My days are all filled with an easy country charm. Thank God I'm a country boy. Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fid- dle. When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle, And life ain't nothin' but a funny, funny riddle: Thank God I'm a country boy. When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow. But the kids are a-sleep so I keep it kinda low: Thank God I'm a country boy. I'd play Sa1ly Goodin' all day if I could, but the Lord and my wife wouldn't take it very good. So I fiddle when I can and work when I should: Thank God I'm a country boy. Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fid- dle. When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddleg And life ain't nothin' but a funny, funny riddle: Thank God I'm a country boy. When there are more fascinating things to do with your time - like going to a movie, watching Starksky and Hutch re-runs, hunting girls or guys at football games, listing the ingredients of Big Macs Cthere are sevenb, or participating in the gathering at Shakey's. And after you've done all those things you go home to relax . . . only to find unopened books staring at you. Not even graduation is more impor- tant than hamburgers.J With your boyfriend or girlfriend? fWell, you could say you were studying.J Once down to serious business of actually doing your homework, you try to decide the easiest and quickest way to get it done. The best way, of course, is to call up a friend who has already done the history assignment and just copy his or her paper. Then you coerce Mother into typing your English paper, while making necessary changes in the name of family pride. That leaves you just enough time to read The Canterbury Tales, and on a bad night when all else has failed , you actually have to do a little honest work yourself. You are able to tolerate even that until you realize that you are the pawn in a cruel plot to drive you insane. Teachers are actually trying to destroy you by getting together and planning it so that all your tests, projects, notebooks, and papers will be due on the same day of the same week. Well, you decided, you'd show them. You weren't the type to be pushed around like that. You just didn't do any of the work. So there. LEFT: Mike Fitzgerald studies alone beside a trailer. Our goal in reading is to reinforce phonetic skills and build individual ability in comprehension. Both programs are directed to individual instruction, constantly analyzing each student's weak- nesses and strengthening them . The ESAA advisory committee is made up of three rep- resentatives from each program. The six students are responsible to all other ESAA students to broafien their knowledge of things outside the classroom. This year the committee has had the following func- tions: a food drive for Thanksgiving, collection of toys and clothing for Christmas, Christmas dramatization of the Christmas story, an exhibit for Black History Week, and an Easter program. All of the functions were very success- ful. xii IIUIE VIRUS, i Cmnscr mpgs' -Q., ...4 ..,. I ,f R S I :1 1 f. f Q Varsit Eagles During the past few months, our athletes have been involved in the great American sport of football. Some players never receive due credit for their part on the team. But true athletes are not interested in personal cre- dit, only that their team win. No player is unimportant. Each and every one has their place to fill, no one else can take your place. If we do not assume our responsibility, the team is weakened. Hard work is required to achieve a strong successful team. The greatest achievements being self-discipline and team discipline. Some players are very interested in football, some are not. Many young men who could develop into great players are not interested in the game at all. Some, probably, are not interested because of the price that has to be paid to become a good player. To the twenty-five, who were interested, there is deep satisfaction in working together to be a great team and need not be ashamed - win or lose. Everyone can usually do the big things successfully. But the champions are the ones who do the little things well. This involves a p1ayer's training program, his relationship with his family, teammates, teachers, and coaches. Basically, it involves being the right sort of person in every possible way. This makes a coach real- ize that the great opportunity to teach athletes how to live a life instead of how to make a living can never be wasted. Coach Malone WM .QW ak... :Basil M , . . ,. Q S 1 I E i w N Football is one of the more popular sports in the world today. It provides the excitement and entertainment one needs in his life in today's world . Horn Lake is a school that has long had a tradition of good football. The past four years the records haven't been too good, but there was still plenty of good foot- ball being played on the Horn Lake field. There is always some good in every situation and there has been much good come from this past 2-8 sea- son. The Juniors gained much experience at being leaders of next year's teams because there were only 25 men on our team. As we the Seniors leave this school, we make a pred- iction that Horn Lake will again rise to be a football power under the leadership of Coach Thomas Malone . Randy Denton 11 kwin ew zt ti' 101 HORN LAKE GIRLS The 1976-'77 season has been one of steady improve- ment. Losing heavily to graduation the girls started the season with a very inexperienced team. Making many mistakes along the course of the season but also gaining valuable playing experience, the girls seemed to put things together after the Christmas break, beating teams that had beaten them earlier in the season. The major accomplishments were winning the sub-District Tourna- ment and qualifying for the North Mississippi playoffs. HORN LAKE BOYS The 1976-77 season has been an exciting year for the boys' basketball team. It has been the year for close ball games. The Eagles won many come-from-behind ball- games, some on last second shots, in their bid for the state playoffs. Players of varying sizes and abilities blended their talents together in the framework of a team to make the '76-77 season one of the most success- ful in many years. Being one of the smaller teams at school, it shares little of the prestige and glory of some of the larger sports, but the enthusiasm of the players well makes up for this. A challenging part of the game is that tennis is more of an individual sport than football or baseball and exerts more pressure on the individual player and requires dedication to the game. This year's tennis team was relatively young and consisted of several new members, but where their experience stopped, their eagerness to play started. Horn Lake was one of the least experienced teams of the region but did well at the District games. Small but mighty , it successfully showed its desire for a piece of the glory and upheld the Horn Lake tradition of winning. Q,,u N. A Ai! .4 Sitting outside on a cold October day, I've noticed there is a sense of chill in everyone's way. You know I really hate to see this year go by so fast, Because I know when this one's over it'll be the last. Some of the friends I've made over the years, I'll never see again . . . It makes me hope and wish that this year will never end . I think about when I walk across the stage and Mr. Johnston shakes my hand, I'll have to give up my crazy ways and then become a man! There have been so many teachers that have helped me through the years. Just to think about my friends and foes makes me want to stay . . . I guess I'll forget it all for now on this cold October day . All of the friendships that were made will always be cherished in our hearts. We hope, that as you go through your remaining years of high school, that you will cherish each moment. Take advantage of that time and keep Horn Lake High School a place that we can all be proud of in the years to come.
