The labor of the colonial housewife was backbreak- ing dnldgery. In a frontier settlement, housekeeping was only a part of her duties. She helped clear land and plant crops. Even if she lived in a vil- lage of snug, comfortable houses, her daily tasks filled every hour from sun- rise to sunset. Today our Future Homemakers of America are trying to help individuals improve personal, family and commu- nity living. Horn Lake's FHA is trying to make life less complicated than that of colonial days. With the help of 32 members, the FHA plans a Teacher Appreciation Day and a Spring Ban- quet. They also gave food and clothing to needy families in the Horn Lake Area. TOP PICTURE, THIS PAGE: Margaret Pettit. I9 i Cumpleanos Feliz, orteamerioanos! fHappy Birthday, America One master mariner of the fifteenth century thought that he could find a western passage to the Indies and the Orient. He failed to find this passage, but he made even greater history by discovering America. Sailing for Spain , Christopher Columbus estab- lished an early foothold for the Spanish exploration of the southern and western United States. Horn Lake's Spanish Club provides an opportunity for students to learn the fun customs of the Spaniards. The 34 members of the Spanish Club plan a fund-raising project and an awards banquet honoring members who have shown academic excellence or leader- ship. Each spring, five representatives from the Spanish Club enter the National Spanish Contest sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portugese.
