Athletics Sports have always been a tradition in America, beginning with the track and field events which were a popular pasttime of the colonists and early American settlers. Football, basketball, and baseball developed later in America and have become popular sports in other parts of the world as well. Horn Lake students prove their interest in athletics with team sports and organized physical education, with back yard games of free- for-all football or basketball, or by providing an audience of cheering Eagle fans for school team efforts. An outstanding coaching staff leads Horn Lake athletics . Every year students at Horn Lake prove that sports are indeed an American way of life.

Football 775-'76 Although the Eagles saw defeat on several games, the 1975-'76 season provided valuable experience for a team composed mainly of juniors. The Eagles did have the thrill of defeating a team from Memphis which they had been unable to defeat during the previous two sea- sons. Looking forward to 1975-76, the Eagles' team will have many seniors who have played together for three years and who have gained much experience from this year's action on the field. Coaching staff this year included Coach Malone, Coach Ross, and Coach McCully. Coach Thomas Malone accents training for the interior as well as the exterior of an athlete. Everybody likes to win, says Coach Malone, and this is what outsiders look for. I look for inside training - what kind of citizen a person will be. A good citizen puts God first, his fellow man second, and himself third - and a team should be the same way. Coach Malone would like to see a definite weight program and more off -season training at Horn Lake to help elimi- nate injuries, which were a problem to the squad this year. Of the sea- son, he says, We learned from the season. It made the athletes who will be back next year more dedi- cated. One thing is sure - no mat- ter what the score, the Eagles are always winners. 45
