Talents of eoretaries and Counselors lnolude Listening Abilities Every day the behind-the- scenes work of the office staff and counselors affect each of us, from administration to faculty to students. As Area Secretary, Mrs. Thomas must coordinate all the business of the schools in the Horn Lake area. To keep records and reports for several schools is no simple task, but Mrs. Thomas' efficiency and interest in her job combine with her gra- ciousness to make her loved and respected by all who know her. Mrs. Mooneyham and Mrs. Rasco prove daily that it takes hard work to keep the business end of our school flowing smoothly. Typing absentee lists, activity schedules, and letters, filling out reports, sending out SOS calls to substitute teachers, filling out reports, tracking down students, ordering supplies, fill- ing out reports - these are just a few of their daily duties. Keep- ing to a minimum the wave of people and problems that crowd the office each day is their spe- cialty - and smiles are their trademark. Patience in abundance, a host of helpful suggestions, and a tal- ent for organization are charac- teristics that a counselor must have. Mrs. Hyde spends much of her day working with seniors and juniors, checking credits and helping them to finalize plans for college or career. In her opin- ions, participation of Horn Lake students in the counseling process is A One Plus. My most dif- ficult problem is trying to con- vince a student who wants to drop out why he should stay in school, Mrs. Hyde reports. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is to see a student who has had difficult problems in school make a suc- cess . Mr. Grayson would like to see more group conferences and more activities for junior high stu- dents. His counseling technique includes careful and active lis- tening to whatever problem a student wants to share. I listen and try to help the student face facts, says Mr. Grayson. I must be helping - because they keep coming back.
