During this year our gr f. attentions were focused on another aspect of history - the origins of our country , commemorated by our l nationwide Bicentennial celebration. In honor of America's 200th year, we proudly present this yearbook 5 as Horn Lake's official Bicentennial document - with V hopes that its papers will make you want to celebrate - AMERICA . ., t 3 A ri H ,,. ..- '.-55 PAST and PRESENT God Bless America . . Land That I Lovea' Take a good look around you. Everywhere, signs of America's beginning appear. The sights and sounds of 1776 are silent, but reminders of them are everywhere - reminders that call to mind America's strength, valor, and the pioneer spirit that has made us great. r 21:fE,Q :-' iii? No matter that our forefathers' Great American Dream has never completely been fulfilled - few drea ' ' ' ' ms ever are. What s lmportant 18 that we have th1s dream as our goal - and that we continue striving to attain it. On July 4, 1776, the United States of America declared herself free and independent from her mother country, England. From that day forward Americans strived to set before the world a new standard of government, one which guaranteed freedom and equality to all mankind. Their efforts were successful, for even now, two hundred years later, this government prevails. Americais Bicentennial celebration is a time to reflect upon our nation's past. lt is a time to recall the courageous actions of those who dedicated their lives to the growth and development of Amer- ica. We, as Americans, can be proud of our countryls heritage and of her accomplishments. Though this bicentennial year is a time to reflect upon our nation's history, it is a time for rededication - a time to look toward the future. Let us strive to conquer our evils and weak- nesses, magnifying day by day the good that lives in every man. Let us seek not for that which divides us, but rather for that which unites us. Let us seek for supreme guidance as we plan for the future. Above all, let us pray that the true Spirit of '76 - its hope, its loyalty, its joy, and its freedom - may live forever in us. ' Kathy Epps Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspirationf, Thomas Alva Edison Americans are noted world- wide for their determination in pursuing and attaining their goals, often at great cost to themselves. Horn Lake students are a proof rather than an exception to this statement. In all contests or challenges, students of HLHS are willing to make personal sacrifices to complete their designed tasks. Football, basketball, and baseball developed later in America and have become popular sports in other parts of the world as well. Horn Lake students prove their interest in athletics with team sports and organized physical education, with back yard games of free- for-all football or basketball, or by providing an audience of cheering Eagle fans for school team efforts. An outstanding coaching staff leads Horn Lake athletics . Every year students at Horn Lake prove that sports are indeed an American way of life. Football 775-'76 Although the Eagles saw defeat on several games, the 1975-'76 season provided valuable experience for a team composed mainly of juniors. The Eagles did have the thrill of defeating a team from Memphis which they had been unable to defeat during the previous two sea- sons. Looking forward to 1975-76, the Eagles' team will have many seniors who have played together for three years and who have gained much experience from this year's action on the field. Coaching staff this year included Coach Malone, Coach Ross, and Coach McCully. Coach Thomas Malone accents training for the interior as well as the exterior of an athlete. Everybody likes to win, says Coach Malone, and this is what outsiders look for. I look for inside training - what kind of citizen a person will be. A good citizen puts God first, his fellow man second, and himself third - and a team should be the same way. Coach Malone would like to see a definite weight program and more off -season training at Horn Lake to help elimi- nate injuries, which were a problem to the squad this year. Of the sea- son, he says, We learned from the season. It made the athletes who will be back next year more dedi- cated. One thing is sure - no mat- ter what the score, the Eagles are always winners. 45 BOTTOM PICTURE: 1975-'76 Football Team: FRONT ROW - left to right: Tommy Logan, Charlie Rutledge, Curtis Rice, Ben Chalmers, Michael Rice, Jerry Whitley, Robert Givens. 2nd ROW - Terry Shaw, Johnny Billings, Mike Rucker, Marty Bouzines, Louis Hailey, Bill Moore, Chuck Smith, Jimmy Kilpatrick, Earl Bryant, Randy Scott. 3rd ROW - Junior Rawson, Paul Withers, Mike Atchley, Jeff Winters, Ray James, Thomas Robinson, L. In games played against Desoto County revils the record was 6-2. Four of the top eight players from last year returned to the team, and the experience of the returning players led to many victories in the early part of the season. Some weaknesses developed as the season progressed . Especially evident was lack of height and inability to hit the outside shot. In every game the Eagles played against opponents who had an advantage in height, but they always provided tough competition . The Eaglettes began the season with two main goals - to improve on last year's record and to go to the state tournament. Losing four of the top seven players from last year gave the team a lack of experienced starters, and lack of speed also proved a weakness. Height, however, was a strong point of the '75-'76 Eaglettes, and they used this factor to their advantage in several games. With the season almost at an end the first goal has been accomplished - and the second is a strong possibility. Led by Coach Gaylon Baird , who was chosen Chickasaw Conference Coach of the Year, the Eaglettes have continued the winning tradition of Horn Lake basketball. ffwe X4 - , W 'L ff 4, , , m ' M ..g U f f ' fk. 2, V ' ' V . if 2, . V CHARACIER To Insure 'Seholastiff Tranquility Many of the colonial leaders had qualities of great leadership, outstand- ing character and the ability to make important achievements. One such person was Thomas Jefferson, an intel- lectual leader of the colonies, whose achievements included the authorship of the Declaration of Independence. Today the Beta Club of H.L.S. is very active in promoting the ideals of honesty, service, and leadership among high school students of Amer- ica. The Horn Lake Beta Club raised over S300 for the Hemophilia Drive and sponsored a float which they designed and built in the Christmas Parade. They worked the concession stand at basketball games to raise money for the State Beta Convention in February. Their plans include the for- mation of a Junior High Beta Club. The labor of the colonial housewife was backbreak- ing dnldgery. In a frontier settlement, housekeeping was only a part of her duties. She helped clear land and plant crops. Even if she lived in a vil- lage of snug, comfortable houses, her daily tasks filled every hour from sun- rise to sunset. Today our Future Homemakers of America are trying to help individuals improve personal, family and commu- nity living. Horn Lake's FHA is trying to make life less complicated than that of colonial days. With the help of 32 members, the FHA plans a Teacher Appreciation Day and a Spring Ban- quet. All young ladies and most young gentlemen were expected to learn to play an instrument or sing with skill. George Washington played a flute and Thomas Jefferson a violon- cello. Singing and music societies grew to be the favorite form of enter- tainment. Horn Lake's large high school chorus provides entertainment for programs and enjoys just singing together. From the large chorus comes many talented ensembles such as quartets, soloists, and the glee club. The chorus plans to participate in the District Festival. The Junior High Chorus hopes to be the nucleus for a good high school pro- gram in the future. They hope to learn more about music and to grow musi- cally during their high school years. One regret of Mr. Upchurch is that most of his time with students is spent with troubled or problem students. He misses the associa- tion with high-achievers that he had as a classroom teacher. Mr. Johnston also emphasizes the need for a higher quality of school spirit at Horn Lake, but he feels that Most students are the greatest, and 99070 of them can be reached if the effort is put forth. The role of the teacher or administrator is a demanding one, especially in the field of student-faculty relations. Mr. Johnston observes: l found that I had a love for every student I came in contact with. When stu- dents would come to me looking for advice, comfort, or just a friend to talk with, I found that there's more to teaching than just reading, writing, and arithme- t1c. ' , as is eff COACH GAYLON BAIRD Mississippi History and Government, Basketball Talents of eoretaries and Counselors lnolude Listening Abilities Every day the behind-the- scenes work of the office staff and counselors affect each of us, from administration to faculty to students. As Area Secretary, Mrs. Thomas must coordinate all the business of the schools in the Horn Lake area. To keep records and reports for several schools is no simple task, but Mrs. Thomas' efficiency and interest in her job combine with her gra- ciousness to make her loved and respected by all who know her. Mrs. Mooneyham and Mrs. Rasco prove daily that it takes hard work to keep the business end of our school flowing smoothly. Typing absentee lists, activity schedules, and letters, filling out reports, sending out SOS calls to substitute teachers, filling out reports, tracking down students, ordering supplies, fill- ing out reports - these are just a few of their daily duties. Keep- ing to a minimum the wave of people and problems that crowd the office each day is their spe- cialty - and smiles are their trademark. Patience in abundance, a host of helpful suggestions, and a tal- ent for organization are charac- teristics that a counselor must have. Mrs. Hyde spends much of her day working with seniors and juniors, checking credits and helping them to finalize plans for college or career. In her opin- ions, participation of Horn Lake students in the counseling process is A One Plus. My most dif- ficult problem is trying to con- vince a student who wants to drop out why he should stay in school, Mrs. Hyde reports. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is to see a student who has had difficult problems in school make a suc- cess . Mr. Grayson would like to see more group conferences and more activities for junior high stu- dents. His counseling technique includes careful and active lis- tening to whatever problem a student wants to share. I listen and try to help the student face facts, says Mr. Grayson. I must be helping - because they keep coming back. ...I TOP LEFT - Mary Gayle Rasco counts typing as one of her most often used talents. TOP MIDDLE - Mrs. Louise Thomas makes frequent t.rips from her office to the Horn Lake campus - always exhibiting her sense of humor in her smile. TOP RIGHT - Junior High Counselor Henry Grayson checks one of the records on file in his office. BOTTOM LEFT - Mrs. Virginia Mooneyham finds attendance reports an important responsibility - and often a headache! BOTTOM RIGHT - Mrs. Jennie Lee Hyde checks senior credits to assure no problems at graduation . 7 School Staff Keeps Us Warm, Happy, and Safe Other people at school are working to make sure that students' time spent on campus is spent in an atmosphere that is clean and healthy . The cafeteria staff works hard to provide nutritious and tasty meals for a1'l students , realizing that it's hard to study when you're hungry! Their work is calculated to keep us feeling full and satisfied with good-for-you kinds of food . Mr. Brown and his staff are constantly busy trying to keep things around campus clean and in good repair - a job which would be greatly benefited by more student clean-up effort. Teacher aides Mrs. Little and Mrs. Garnett work with students who need individual help with their studies. They realize that there is nothing more rewarding for a student than to be able to say, I can do this! That feeling of accomplishment is what they try to give each student. We may not give these helpers the recognition they deserve - but we'd be awfully cold, hungry and miserable if they weren't around.
