At 5 foot 10 he is not big for his position at offensive guard, but he made up for his size with hustle. Although at the beginning of the year he was not expected to start, Dave hustled his way to a first string job which he kept all season. His number 61 became a common one blocking on running plays as well as on pass protection. When we think of a football player, we think of him battling away in a game every weekend. However, the majority of Dave ' s time was spent at practice almost every night after school during the football season. Above, Dave poses on the practice field after a workout. That weekend football game is still the climax of the days of preparation. Sometimes the hours of practice go for naught as on this Friday night above where Dave (61), Jim Vojtko (25), and Rick Lee (31) look on as Horiick loses its Homecoming game to Beloit 12 — 0. But there are also happier times. At right, Dave flashes a smile after Hor- lick ' s 13 — 7 win over Madison East. . ROW 1: (Jordon Bulkc, John l.udicr, Charles Suscnl, ).imcs o|lkc). I- Day Except for one minor contest, Horlick-Fark Day for 1965-1966 was a great success. The Rebels began with an overwhelming victory in the ticket sales. Following was a rousing exchange assembly which saw speeches by both team captains and their coaches, Mr. Mills, and the principal of Park, Mr. Ludeman. An especially original skit portraying the Horlick-Park rivalry through the ages highlighted the program. In spite of the fervor displayed at the assembly, Horlick dropped the football game — 26. = r?ih ;?ii PrMni So|3fio wMe FootboM BOTTOM ROW; David Morgan, lorn Jenkins, Gary Reitsma, Brad Lee, Mike Burdick, Brian Ko- pecky. What does the graduate come home for? Assemblies are the same. Parades seldom vary. All football games are somewhat alike. And who wants to dance in a drab fieldhouse, partially disguised with a castle, crepe paper, and tin foil stars? .Sv llThe ' Deaiof kt). There is more. The assembly, parade, game, and dance represent a sense ol belonging and a spirit of oneness. By returning to cheer with us, the graduate relives past experiences and shares new ones. Homecoming is a time to share loyalties. K N I G H T F A L L Cioss CooMJbuj BOTTOM ROW; Mike M.CIcndon. An Barcmtian, Joe (IraiefTa. Ray Torres. TOP ROW: Tom V ' anhorn, Jerry Secor. With Coach Rich- ardson at the helm, the team compiled a 7 win — 3 loss record. Included are the Madison West and Lakeshore Invitational Championships. The harriers also finished third in the Big Eight, won the Sec- tionals for the third year in a row and went on for an eighth place finish in State competition. School is an extracurritular activity for Debate . . spend more time on Debate than school work. — James VVelker If a debater wants to be successful, he must spend more time on debate than anything else. A debater can become a success only by practicing against other debaters, so they spend fourteen consecutive Saturdays in practice debates. After this, they enter a tournament in which they meet intense competition. The tournament consist of a district, a sectional, a state, and a national meets. They continue to debate in the tournament as long as they win. (Below) Debaters are having a coat check at a bas- ketball game to help raise funds for out of town trips. Ingnd Taibel Horlick ' s American Field Service Club helps each year to raise money to either bring a foreign exchange stu- dent to Horlick or to send a Horlick student abroad. They sponsor a Bermuda Day, an exchange assembly at which the city ' s foreign students speak, and a Foreign .Affairs ' Dance. A Horlick student becomes an exchange student when he fulfills the requirements set up by the national office of AFS and is chosen through an interview to represent Horlick. If he makes it through the preliminary eliminations, he is a national finalist and will be a foreign exchange student if there is a home which fits his personality available at the time and hemisphere for which he signed up. Theresa Vas- concillos was Horlick ' s Portugese foreign exchange stu- dent. Theresa V ' astontellos homeland is Lisbon, Portugal There she was a student six days a week from October to June. Her school is slowly becoming co-educational; there are 784 boys to 14 girls. When she returns home. Theresa will have to complete her senior year since her school year in the United States receives no school credit. She plans to continue her education in Switzer- land and major in German. (Theresa speaks French, English, and Portugese, too.) Theresa enjoyed Student Council, basketball games, and candy canes. As an exchange student she was expected to speak to groups besides carry a full academic curriculum. Theresa ' s American sister was Sarah Evans. This fine job of instructing can not pass without due praise. These teacher-coaches spend long hours after regular school hours and, in some sports, before school. Their Saturday and Friday eve- ning activities give way to games, matches, and meets. The job, however, does have its rewards as well. To see a boy develop into a trained athlete and to know that that boy learned his skills and competitiveness from the coach himself brings personal satisfaction. The coach may even mold one of these boys into an athlete of superior prowess in his field. At any rate we here at Horlick are proud of the capable leader- ship which these coaches have afforded us. « ( % f M -: S i. l '  f ; R B B L f f m m f m Jm via.
