Speaking is an important task of the A.F.S. student. . I Nothing can be more exciting for a high school student than living in a foreign country. It you doubt this statement, iust ask either Ulla Laur- sen, l-lorliclds student from Den- mark, or Simona Sheppard, who spent the summer of i960 in Swit- zerland. Both trips were made pos- sible by the American Field Service, an organization which not only plans the student exchange but contributes greatly to the cost of the trip. Simona lived in Switzer- land under the summer plan, and Ulla has attended school at Hor- lick during the past year. Corol, bub- bling ond ecstotic, received the crown from footbc1ller-turned- prince-charming, Dove Azoriczn. The whirlwind week wos copped by the onnuol donce, reigned over by the queen ond her court. Court members, Judy Sukus, Melody Wohlust, Kothy Kottol, ond Sue Miller oided the queen in her duties cmd added sporkle to the festivi- ties. These homerooms won prizes for fiocitsz first ploce being cop- tured by homeroom 138, second place by 315, ond third ploce by 218. Homeroom 138 received 0 trophy donoted by the Flot Iron Businessmen's Associotion for their first ploce entry. Student spirit wcis high ot both the bonfire ond the gome but the Rebels lost the ut- terly contested scrop. Z S. -nr HCRLICK-PARK DAY Although it was early, all of the spirits were high on the morning of Novem- ber Qnd, as our flag raising ceremony began. Shortly after the flag ceremony the Horlick-Park exchange assembly was presented to the student body, The principals and coaches of both schools gave their predictions of the outcome of the game, and the captains of both teams assured us that whichever team won, it would be a game worth seeing. Most of the Horlick students were dressed in our scarlet and grey school colors. Horlick won the battle of the colors and the battle of cheersg how- ever, the game went to Park by a score of I9-6, The ticket soles contest was won by Horlick. Jon Pellegrin was the champion ticket seller with a total of 50 tickets, His prize for his endeavor was an honorary membership in S.C.A. The first place in homeroom competition went to l36, and homeroom 3l5 cap- tured second place. Www YP' I 'sa' sf The first place winner ot the Christmas Door Decoration contest this year was home- room 335. Homeroom 3l4 placed second in the contest with homeroom 223 capturing third prize. Fifty-tour baskets of food were presented to the Good Fellows at the annual Sing-Out assembly. Tex Reynolds, local newspaper columnist, accepted the bas- kets on behalf of the Good Fellows. Horlick students decorated the halls and the gym for the annual Christ- mas Assembly. Highlight of the festivities was the gathering of food baskets for the Good Fellows. This year Tex Reynolds, local newspaper columnist, mode the acceptance speech. I PARENTS COME TO scHooL it Parents attending Parents' Night at Horlick got an idea of what their sons and daughters are doing. They actually saw students in the process of some ot their daily activities. Art students displayed Their talents and a girls gym class exhibited volley ball skills. Chemistry classes were not ignored as student chemists were conducting experiments in the making of glass and rubber. This year Parents did not follow their child's schedule as in past years, Instead, each department met separately. The parents could choose to attend two sections. Crowns ot Camelot , our annual coronation dance, was held February ll, 1961. The iunior class, with the help ot the sophomores, conducted the entire planning ot the dance. The gym was decorated as a castle in the days ot King Arthur. The aspiration ot a young man desiring the tra- ditional pleasures ot lcnighthood provided the theme tor the dance. Re- freshments were served in Ye Olde Tea Shoppe. Queen Kathy Kottal and King Jerry Teslca reigned over Crowns of Camelot. Kathy received her crown from Siegrid Apple, last year's queen, Jerry received his crown from last year's king, Orlando Lee. The court members were Judy Cloutier, Kathie Kornack, Carol Mata- grano, and Melody Wohlust. The male members ot the court were Dave Azarian, Wayne Kosterman, Jim Oesau, and Alex Sabo. HORLlCK'S ELECTION TIME Candidates for second semester offices: FRONT ROW: Paul Wohler, Judy Sukus, Ellen Clark, Judy Cloutier, SECOND ROW: Rod Lorence, Wayne Kosterman, Jon Pellegrin, and Bob Burns. Those elected were Wayne Kosterman, Presidentg Bob Burns, Vice-President, and Judy Sukus, Secretary-Treasurer. Poster parties are an integral part ot Horlick elections. At the poster parties, students plan and produce campaign materials, meet candi- dates, and enjoy earned refresh- ments. SENIORS 1961 l 2 All the preparations - poster parties and speech writing - were put to good use the week ot the Student Council Elections. On the morning before elections, candi- dates and their speakers were given an opportunity to present their platforms to the students. The play, based on a novel by Jules Verne, was one at the largest productions ever staged by the Horliclc players. Three ot the leading roles were portrayed by actors new to dra- matics at Horlick. Novelty acts of dancers, singers, and iugglers added variety and humor to the thrill-packed production. The game jointly arranged by rep- resehtatives ot the junior class and sometimes-present, sometimes-absent Mr. Christensen, attracted a large crowd ot cheering students. COACHES' FROLIC The Coaches' Frolic was held for Horlick students on January 6th. The dance helped to raise money to pay for in- iuries sustained by Horlick athletes.
