He came to be thought of in this way not because he had been on the faculty since the school's first year, nor because he was principal for 13 years. Mr. Smith came to symbolize Horlick because - well, because he was Mr. Smith. ln few large high schools do students know their principals as well as Rebel knew Mr. Smith. His friendliness, humor, patience, understanding, unselfishness, and humility - these were the characteristics which we discovered in Mr. Smith and which caused us to give him our respect and affection. ' The statement He was a good man was repeated by many at the time of Mr. Smith's passing, although the statement is brief, its meaning and truth are profound. Of the many lessons we have learned at Horlick, the most important one for us to remember is the lesson Mr. Smith taught us, a philosophylby which he lived: To best serve yourself, you must serve others. 2 Student Council First Semester Second Semester Ml f 4 f my f 77 y if . , ' , A ,V ., ' ' KA ', f , fgfilb , K I, M47 UL 1 'ffM 534 C, Y Q7 ip, 1. Activities X crown 'hee ' ' -S TEA Homecoming Festivities I958 We didn'f win M On Thursday, October 16th, we celebrated our sixth annual homecoming with The traditional pa- rade and bonfire. Thirty-odd floats participated, all of which showed exceptional originality and ettort. Homeroom 237 captured tirst place and second place went to Homeroom 319. A record-breaking turn-out of nearly 700 students took an active part by cheering and showing their school spirit at the bonfire. Though we didn't win our homecoming game with Madison East, all sorrowful hearts were quickly healed at the all-school party, Tackle Twirl, held Saturday, October 19th. Queen Sharon Cloutier, First Attendant Judy Schuppe, and Second Attend- ant Siegrid Apple were presented to the school at the pep assembly on Friday and later honored as royal guests at the all-school party. The co-chairmen for homecoming were Gretel Hanson and Bob Dahl. Pork dream boy gm S 35,36 Homeroom 322 won first place in ticket soles, second to 237, and third place to 218. School got off to a good start that day with the traditional Horlick-Park challenge assembly pre- sented by students from both schools. Public interest and enthusiasm was built up through a ticket selling con- test. Though our Blue 'n Orange op- ponents made the culminating football game a game to forget for us, at least we came home with the laurel leaf of victory in ticket sales. Horlick-Park Day Hello, darling . , . Hazel Horlick, here. it as mn-1-1i - sf The annual sing-out assembly held on December 19th was a huge success. Circled around the Christmas tree in the gym are Lorelei, A Cappella, and Mixed Chorus directed by Mr. Hubbard. Upon entering the gym, the audience was aware of the dimming overhead lights. Soon the darkness was pierced by the colored spots directed on the massed chorus. Following a program of traditional Christmas music, the entire student body joined in the singing of the carols. Adding to the spirit of the festive season were gay hall decorations and door displays. The silver-trimmed tree in the main lobby greeted l Christmas in Song and Spirit the students and did much to cast a holiday spell on all. ' l K 10 For the eleventh consecutive year Tex Reynolds was on hand land crutchesl to accept the Christmas baskets for the good Fellers at our sing-out assembly. This year's chairman, Sue Smith, presented the 43 bas- kets to Tex. Sue Spangenberg odiusfs Yhe leg of Homeroom 220's real gingerbread boy which won flrsi place. Within the past year Rebel Rousers has added a new membership requirement whereby a pledge is expected to earn six points through participation in various spirit-building activities. These points are accrued by selling at the club-sponsored bake sales, drawing and .painting posters publicizing sports events, attending out-of-town games, and working in the coat check-room at basketball games. Of the many services rendered by Rebel Rousers, two of the outstanding were the Rebel-Q for the varsity football players and the pot-luck for the basketball players. Another newly initiated activity in the past year was a sports night held for club members, the wrestling squad, and cross-country and track teams. The club donates its time and money to many proiects, pep assemblies, parties, and dances. Tawasi also has an interesting program for its members. Below, the Tawasi girls and their dates walk to Lincoln Field where the annual Moonlight Hike is held. After the hike, box lunches and pop provide refreshments. The arrangements for the activities of the club are tentatively planned by the cabinet which consists of the otticers for both semesters and the club ad- visors, Miss Molner and Mrs. Berteau. Below we get a glimpse of one of the exciting games between Co-Rec and another pioneer league team. 47 Co- Rec Co-Rec, a club comprised of Horlick and Park stu- dents is an affiliate of the YMCA. Because of its affiliation and the size of its membership, Co-Rec ofters many 'types of entertainment. Monthly sport- nights are held where members may bowl, play ping- pong, swim or dance. After home basketball games, Co-Rec sponsors dances, and for out-of-town games, Co-Rec sponsors bus trips. An outstanding feature of the club program is the week-end trips to Camp Anokoiig, Here there is horseback riding, archery, canoeing, boating, nightly camp fires, square dancing, corn roasts, and many other activities. These and other programs are planned at the weekly executive board meetings held at the YMCA. Le Cercle Francais French Club is an extracurricular activity held once a month. Its program is planned for everyone's enioyment. Student participants, to the LEFT, present an original skit at their regular meeting. The cast enjoyed this presentation as much as the onlookers. For a special program, the club went to the Folk Fair in Milwaukee. There they saw French gourmets and became connoisseurs of Gaelic delicacies. Diversified programs constitute an interesting meet- ing where one can parler francais, learn French customs, and have a good time. Sodalitas Latina Der deutsche Verein Advanced Latin Club members, RIGHT, and Latin Club, CENTER, hold monthly class meetings. Some members give oral reports based on Roman life and times. Others sing Latin songs and add va- riety to their meetings. The pleasant diversion breaks the uniformity of the regular school day for club members. German Club holds its meetings in class. The high- light of the year was its Christmas party when German customs and folk dances were taught. Stu- dents mastered German dances which were pre- sented at the Language Club Banquet. The banquet was planned and presented by the combined foreign language students. I1 mi 51 L,,f-i Band L Orchestra 'Wu R' My We www? X? ,il 'I Yi' ,V WW W.. .. Two of the most unglamorous iobs in Horlick are held by the Cafeteria and the Library Assistants. The stomachs and the minds of o good many students would be emptier if it weren't tor the efforts of these few who put duty above reward. Granted, we would probably have a library and a cafeteria without them, but we are all assured ot an easier and pleasanter stay at Horlick with the services they per- form. Hampered by bad luck, lack of experience, ond super- ior competition, the Rebel wrestlers managed to win only two meets all year. Towards the end of the season our boys linally began rounding into shape. Three of the outstand- ing wrestlers on this year's team who brought home a few victories were Pete Kalagian, Fritz Jacobs, and Paul Vermey. Vermey is the only one of the three returning next year. Girls' Bowling The girls' bowling club, unaer the direction of Miss Fieting, is a wholesome outlet which promises relaxation, coupled with excitement and pleasure. Every Monday after school, forty girls meet at Douglas Bowl tor a few hours of fun while improving their averages and competing for league honors. Coaches The members of Horlick's coaching staff find themselves well occupied throughout the entire year. The guidance and training they give their teams require much patience and a willingness to put in many extra hours alter school. Our athletic program reflects the eltort of the coaches. Baseball is a sport which is rapidly becoming one of the most popular, both for the team and the fans, around the Horlick Campus. Last year's team was one of the few brighter spots in the school sports. The team finished with a 6-6 con- ference record, behind Big Eight Champ Keno- sha, followed by Janesville, Madison East, Madison West, and Central. ln non-conference competition, the Rebels finished with three wins and no losses. J The team is expected to be very strong this year, and with a few good breaks, the team might turn into the Big Eight championship. The Rebels have seven returning lettermen, four of whom are seniors: Gary Schonert, Ron Anton, Dick Johnson, and Frank Perkovich. Three are iuniors: Ron and Don Matt, and Brian Baillie. Helping out the returning lettermen are Jim Mascari, Paul Vermey, and Dave Pellegrin. Top men of the 1957-58 season in the batting department are Dick Johnson, .4l7, Gary Schon- ert, .333, and Don Matt, .3i3. Not far behind are Ron Matt and Brian Baillie who are expected to help out in this department. 1552. E 1 xv www NN xx 'EL mv -w. Q, Qs ,il , 4 evil QSMf,?z,., WQTS Q, , 5 '51 f, K . Nwexmm- mi ,. In every game the Rebels entered, they were in there to win, however, the Big Eight was found to be its strongest in many years, and the best place Horlick could take was oth. The team's successful sieges were impressive in beating Madi- son Central and Beloit. The Rebels also astonished Madison West's powerful eleven by holding them scoreless in the last three quarters of the game. The Horlick team was hampered in the backtield with the loss of Steve Zold during the Janes- ville game because of a knee iniury. Steve, a senior, had until his iniury been averaging 8.6 yards a carry. Passing by Gary Schonert, Don Matt, and Brian Baillie netted Hor- lick a total of 724 yards. This sea- son's team was headed again by Coach Belden, who was ably as- sisted by Ewers, Curtis, and Brown.
