Against a background of pris- on walls, Horlick students learned that the best way to stay out of trouble and iail was to ioin clubs and have good wholesome fun. Maybe the paper cell-chain did break and the rat did look fake, but everyone got the point and enjoy- ed the assembly. With the Horlick-Park game in November came the Horlick-Park challenge Assembly, which Horlick dramotics students wrote, cast, acted and directed. Remember the old-fashioned meller-dramer with the Park villain demandina his mortgage? What a skit and what imagina- tions we used to turn people into furniture. At Park the table got turned when Park was the hero and we were the villain. FORENSICS The spring of '48 found 2 forensic stu- dents representing Horlick at the State Finals in Madison. These 2, George Altenbach and Jack Ferris, had won A's at Port Washington where 5 students from Horlick fA winners at Kenosha and Horlickj had competed in the Milwaukee District Contest. PRODUCTIONS SONG OF MY HEART Amid torrents of unadulterated Racine rain, 38 drenched but spirited play-makers waded to the Mainstreet Theatre to present Heidi two Sat- urdays in November. Even the gas leak under the theatre couldn't dull their efforts to put on 4 loveable and great performances for a total of 4,000 children. The constant ringing of Swiss Mountain bells, various attempts at yodeling, the search for the minister's black hat, Heidi's split-second costume changes, and the care of 4 tiny kittens all furnished some tense moments. The spring play was The Imaginary lnvalid . The story of a man who believes himself to be violently ill and tries to marry his daughter to an intelligent but stupid young physician. Johnson and Hansen continually smashed through the Madison line. Tucker was in- iured in the third quarter. Madison East - A slow start with poor running and passing governed this game until the fourth quarter. Captain Moe Garbedian passed to Mar- gosian on the East T6 for the only score of the game, Horlick losing, 6 to l4. Janesville - Johnson blocked a kick and Voss, taking advantage of the break, recovered to score. Sharp defensive work of Voss, Hansen, and De- Rose, and Moe's quick thinking held Janesville to 24 points against our 7. George had to reach for this one. REVIEW Starting early this fall with 60 men, Coach Reb- holz built up a speedy and aggressive team which accomplished much more than the scoreboard shows. Although the squad was inexperienced this season, great things are expected on the grid machine next year. Solomon Juneau - The team opened the season in top notch shape, and things looked rosy when Juneau was downed T9 to 6. Greco made the first touchdown of the year, and Velska followed with another. There was plenty of substitution. Beloit - lt was Dad's Night, and disappointing too. Engel romped o'er the field four times on bril- liant touchdown runs. In the second half Hansen stole Beloit's ball and ran 92 yards to set up o score for Velska. Margosian scored on a pass tc make the final 34 to T2, Beloit. Kenosha - It was Keno's night for fumbles, but Horlick, although outplaying the Red Devils, had the breaks against them and lost 7 to 6. Tucker, Bodnar, and Johnson played excellent ball, Han- sen blocked and recovered a kick for the only score. Madison Central - After Central had piled up T9 points in the first half, Horlick rallied with a 53 yard surprise play by Margosian. Garbedian scor- ed on a pass from Fillipone, and Tucker converted Then Bodnar scored, and pushed across again for the deciding point of the game, with the score 2C to 19, Horlick. Washington Park - A tough battle right up tc the fourth period, Horlick outplayed their south side rivals in everything but punting. Late in the game after a hard try for a score by Bodnar, Parlf tallied on a run to win 6 to 0. A little half-time talk on the facts of life. BASKETBALL With only three lettermen from the previous year, the '48 team was built strongly around the junior members. Hard work and practice will make us a snappy team, stated Russ Rebholz, coach, at the beginning of the season. And following his advice, the Horlick quintet disproved the experts theory that the North- siders were destined tor last place in the Big Eight cage race. The victory over Park was a highlight of the season, and it showed what the Scarlet and Gray were cap- able of doing if they tried. After winning and losing some tough games dur- ing the conference season, Horlick walked oft with the tournament consolation crown, the highest honor a Northside cage team has received in a regional tilt since 1942. Outstanding in the year's playing were Margosian, Ferraro, and Jack Molbeck, high scorers, and Jim Molbeck, Haumersen, Karsnick, Filippone, Johnson, Chalelcian, Beadles, and Garbedian, who was injured early in the season. SWIMMING The Horlick swimming team, composed ot Haumer- sen, Metz, Voss, Anderson, Myers, Egresi, and Dixon, took third place in the annual city meet. Slushing through puddles and freezing their hands during the early spring practice, the hardy Horlick golf- ers turned in some record scores. Guided by their able coach, Hugh Stewart, who has taken charge since A. J. Cox's retirement, the hackers made a good showing for the school throughout the golf season. Practice sessions and home meets were held on the Racine Country Club course. TENNIS The net men, directed by Coach Mills, started prac- tically from scratch to build themselves into a fast, hard- hitting squad. A backwards glance shows a fine record of hard-fought, victorious matches during the season. INTRA-MURALS Most of the students at Horlick give vent to their athletic abilities through the intra-mural program of basketball and volley ball directed by Hugh Stewart, coach. Games are held during the noon hour with Horlick's pros refereeing. The games are fun for everyone, players and spectators alike, and many a new stategic play or fantastic basketball shot has had its world prevue in a lunch hour tilt. WRESTLING The wrestling team, competing for their tirst year, took seventh place in the state meet and completed what Coach Rebholz called a remarkable season for ca begin- ning squad , this some opinion being voiced by other wrestling coaches. Although some of the best grapplers graduate this spring, the team is looking forward to making the next season a tough one for their competitors. -41- First row, Simcik, Nelson, Hupperts, Dombrowski, Mathiews, Marino, Olson, Voss, Janecky, Metz, Heckel, Brown, Iselin, Reickhotf, second row, Jensen, Staaden, Jorgensen, Margosian, Buran, Arganian, Vidian, Weitermann, Lenzke, third row, Larsen, Happel, Paul, Cerny, Holland, Fazzari, Withers, Hayek, Miliacca, Pavelcik, DeRose, Bowman, Barbera, Vander Leest, Mack, Lindgren, Lucareli, Sweetman, Kehl, Kramer, Dixon, Van Valzah, Surendonk, Anderson, Krueger, Barootian. TRACK Together with cold rainy weather and minor in- iuries, the poor showing of the team at the West Relays lent a dismal air to the beginning of Horlick's 1948 track season. But all that were needed were warm weather and May sunshine for Horlick to turn in some fine track records. This year's team, according to Coach Rebholz, was YEA HORLICK Horlick's cheering squad, chosen by the students themselves, has done a fine job throughout the year, but this spring will lose its two senior cheerleaders, Lois Johnson and Marge Petersen, said John Gach, cheerleader advisor. Their new uniforms ancl yells sparked the pep at many of Horlick's games and assemblies. vastly inexperienced and needed diligent training and hard work by individuals to come through for a successful season. A major proiect for the spring season will be fixing up Horlick's track and athletic field to a point where practice and meets may be held under better condi- tions than now exist. R CLUB Membership in the Horlick R club is open only to men holding one or more letters. This spring the mem- bers have revised the procedure for awarding letters, setting down definite requirements for winning an R.
