Business Buffs here were many different kinds of groups at Horizon that were designed for the business minded student. . . DECA, one such group, was spon- sored by Mr. Cruze. They were in- volved in the canned food drive at Horizon which brought in 7500 cans. They attended the fall and winter area conferences where they won 12 medals. FBLA, another business club, was sponsored by Ms. Haas. They were involved in the Western Re- gion Fall Leadership Conference in Anahiem, California. They re- ceived first place for Battle of the States. At the winter confer- ence, held at Horizon, they re- ceived 8 awards and one chapter award. COE was sponsored by Ms. Haas. Along with the canned food drive at Christmas, they also sponsored candy sales. COE helped and participated in the FBLA Regional Conference in February. At the end of the year, they planned to hold a banquet for all the employers. The industrial ed club at Hori- zon, known as VICA , was spon- sored by Mr. Hildebrand. In addi- tion to the bagel sales held every Thursday, they supported a race car and worked as a pit crew. VICA planned to hold their annu- al car show in May along with the Industrial Ed Fair. 138 - BUSINESS FBLA Front Row: Erin Spadinger, Mike Henretty, Kristina Collings. Many of these students then re- ceived college credit. Besides A.P. classes, other in- teresting subjects were offered. Mr. Reifenrath, for instance, taught the very popular Criminal Law class. Here students learned how the judicial system worked and even participated in little mock trials. Junior Doug Wasbot- ten said, It was a fun class. We had guest speakers every other day. One such speaker was an ex- convict, Bill Owens. Owens not only spoke to the classes but held a question and answer at both lunch hours. Psychology and soci- ology were also offered. Mrs.Neidner taught students about man's behavior. Classes were not the only thing offered in the Social Science de- partment. Mr. Flint offered stu- dents a chance to go to Girls and Boys state. This summer's par- ticipants were Patty Marby, Kim Littlefield, Jon Thomas, Chris Buskirk, Dean Sharenow and Scott Bernstein. The purpose of girls and boys state is to teach high school students how govern- ment works on state levels. Senior Jon Thomas felt it was, an all around governmental experience with party benefits. Senior Patty Marby thought it was, fabulous, wonderful, stimulating, exciting, motivating, nerve wracking, emo- tional, and the best experience I have ever had in my life, quite se- riouslylw Yet, still another interesting sideline offered was Close-Up. Students went to the capital for one week to attend seminars, meet state representatives, sight see, and make friends. Mr. Wil- liamson was in charge of this yearis trip. Well, no matter which it was, psychology, law, government, or history, we the people certainly were fortunate to have such a va- riety of classes.
