Some of fhe upfurned faces express awe, some envy, some fainf derision, while fhere are a few of a cherubic vacuify. The obiecf of fheir varied inferesf is a large doll's cradle, in which lies a child wifh closed eyes, and a beafific and slighfly smug smile. Now if you are as good children as Mary Judd, says fhe feacher, You'll all be able fo sleep in fhe cradle. Buf we can'f, says one of fhe derisive ones, all sleep in fhe cradle af fhe same fime. The remark is wisely overlooked. So go back fo your fables and have your naps, and fhen Miss Lafham will come and sing fo you. There are cries of clelighf, and soon fhirfy-five heads are dufifully benf fo fhe fables in resf. Truly, in fhose days, we were cheerful and obedienf. ln Firsf Grade we older children, graduafed from naps, and already grown blase abouf lullabies, build large and airy wooden houses in which we give complicafed plays. By fhe nexf year we have grown quife clever, and show off our reading abilifies in loud, clear voices. We infone fhe mulfiplicafion fable repeafedly fo our long- suffering families. We parade fhe halls in brown lndian cosfumes painfed wifh large circles and dofs. Our Third Grade feacher inspires our young, ardenf hearfs wifh fhoughfs of Viking glory and handsome, long-haired heroes. We girls are going fo ioin Brunhilde in Valhalla. We make solemn vows fo one anofher fo kill ourselves by violence before we are old enough fo die nafurally, and fhus lose fhe covefed glories. Our age limif is fhirfy, beyond which, fo our minds, lies feeble and foffering old age. While, sepa- rafed from our exalfafion by fhe span of cenfuries and fhe circumsfance of sex, one of fhe boys-perhaps again one of fhe derisive ones grown older-hides in fhe wasfe- baskef fo escape 'the singing lesson. ln Fourfh, Fif+h, and Sixfh Grades we sfruggle wifh American Hisfory, every one of fhe forfy-eighf sfafes relegafed fo ifs correcf posifion, every Presidenf named in order. lNofe: Miss Harden, hearing fhis, perhaps begins fo see some wisdom in fhose Third Grade vows. Perhaps we would do beffer nof fo fry our decreasing infelligence beyond fhirfyll ln Sixfh Grade we begin fo fake an acfive inferesf in school life. lf shows ifself by bloody quarrels wifh fhe Fif+h Grade, and burning envy of lasf year's Sixfh, now beyond our reach in fhe dignified Firsf Year. Buf we sfill have some fraces of our former perspicacify. We choose our sfill-famous Elly as firsf girl Presidenf of Civic League, and lafer award fo her fhe highesf Sixfh Grade honor of Good Cifizenship. We have become Social Beings, imbued wifh imporfanf Responsibilifies. We are almosf in High School. And now we shall belong fo fhe ages. We have worked hard, grown close fo- gefher, sensed righfly our own imporfance. We have laughed af our kindergarfen selves, and relegafed our lndian cosfumes fo fhe boffom of an old frunk. We look down our noses af fhe poor liH'le dears behind us, liffle dears wifh yef disfincf ad- vanfages over us. ls any one of us ingenious enough now fo escape boredom in a wasfe-baskef, or pracfical enough fo walk ouf when offered fhe choice befween con- formify and expulsion? Has fhere, perhaps, passed a glory from fhe ear+h? Twenfy-fhree HORACE MANNIKIN C-5. A. Assembly comes, +ha+ inevilable hour when 'lhe leaders of any number of ac+ivi+ies plead wi+h us +o join +he happy lhrong of +heir followers. And we, who have seen lhis happen in every assembly since we were Firsl Years, are hypnolized by fhe gliH'ering silver disc. Laler, iusl' as we have seHled down +o spend our lives in +he audiforium, we hear, Mee+ing adjourned! ls il' possible? There is a general s'I'ampede for +he door, and soon all of us, having galloped gracefully along +he hall +o 'lhe lunchroom, forgel' our high-flown ambi+ions 'mids+ cruder pleasures in +he shape of spinach and spaghe'Hi, oiifered us by +he incomparable cooks of our worlhy dining hall. Twenfy-four HORACE MANNIKIN The Senior Play From fhe Boxoffice HE lasf days before fhe performance of fhe Ivory Door were spenf in inducing people fo buy ficlcefs. Players dressed in cosfume wenf from room fo room of fhe elemenfary school, fo give fhe children a glamorous glimpse of fhe heroes and heroines fhey wanfed fo see. They came af lasf because fhey were flaffered fo be asked. Unsuspecfing mofhers, calling for fheir children on fhe affernoon of fhe firsf presenfafion found fhemselves confronfed by fhe ingrafiafing smiles of fhe fickef- sellers, and were furfher allured by glimpses of painfed, parfially hidden acfors, who peered fearfully from fhe audiforium doors. Buf af fhe evening performance fhere were no acfors wandering fhus abouf fhe halls. A gorgeously robed audience sfreamed by in sfafely file, and decorously pre- senfed ifs fickefs fo fhe smiling ushers. The fheafre was filled wifh gossip and gay discussions. Then fhe lighfs wenf ouf, and fhe curfains worked,-we could almosf see fhe incredulous smiles back-sfage. We heard lofs of fhings as we lisfened fo fhe audience. There were gasps af fhe soldiers' cosfumes, such inadequafe covering, sighs of rap- fure from Firsf Years, seniors explained fhings fo anyone who would lisfen, and always ended wifh Aren'f we a wonderful class? We chuckled inwardly as we heard fhe exaggerafed complimenfs fond mofhers were giving each ofher. She is foo sweef for words, and she- Buf, dear, your daughfer is so much beffer. l'd be so proud- My goodness, wifh your child- Whaf a lovely audience if was! and how much fhey appreciafed if all. We wepf wifh pure ioy when if was all over and we had counfed up fhe profifs. Then we said again, happily, 7 Whaf a lovely audience! Twenfy-five HORACE MANNIKIN The Senior Play From fhe Boards LL you can see as you sif under fhe piano is a pair of black-sfockinged feef, pacing back and forfh, dark and sfriking before fhe fooflighfs. Sharp againsf fhe whispering back-sfage noises rings a voice, lingering over ifs vowels and making impressive pauses befween words. Suddenly a familiar phrase sends a cold echo of ferror down your back. You rise quickly, bumping your head againsf fhe underside of fhe piano. By a superhuman feaf you find yourself af fhe enfrance fo fhe sfage af fhe same momenf fhaf a black-mousfachioed soldier arrives fhere, look- ing more anxious fhan fierce. You are husfled onfo fhe sfage, and suddenly you sfand frembling in a blaze of lighf. Brighf, painfed faces look af you wifh unsympa- fhefic eyes, and speak fo you in loud, careful voices. You hear your own voice filling fhe hall wifh ferrifying volume. In a nighfmare you hope fhaf fhe audience's eardrums have all bursf. Buf in a shorf while all ferror leaves you, and you can even lisfen wifh defached enioymenf 'ro fhe lines of fhe ofher acfors. Noisily fhe crowd enfers, and sfares curiously around, ifs eyes insfincfively avoid- ing fhe audience. The overpowering fear of ifs members is fhaf fhey will be in a sfraighf line, and fhey are confinually geffing behind one anofher. Only fhe bravesf will sfarf fhe shoufs, and fhe ofhers are glad 'rhaf fheir voices are drowned in fhe general clamor. They make an effecfive exif, rushing off headlong, and fhe cries of panic confinue even affer fhey have leff fhe fooflighfs. You have followed fhem off, and now only fhe voices of fhe prince and princess reach you. You hear fhe prince say, Come, lef us be parf of fhe legend, and you shrink back ferrified as fhe fwo open fhe lvory Door and pass ouf of fhe brighf, unreal sfage fo fhe ofher world of nafural voices and comforfable darkness. Thiriy HORACE MANNIKIN ill Chris'rmas Fes+ivH'ies Thirfy-one HORACE MANNIKIN Dramafic Club N Ocfober fhe firsf, a young lady, sfrong minded and dependable, was invifed fo coach a Dramafic Club play. Finally, in a sfafe of exhausfion, she pulled fhe long-soughf cosfume from under a mass of heavy curfains in fhe corner behind fhe second flood lighf. HORACE MANNIKIN French Club E members enjoy fhe feas and plays greafly, buf ah, fhose meefings! Have you ever heard a meefing conducfed in correcf parlimenfary procedure using only fhe French language-and franfic eye messages fo Madame? The plays, foo, are very amusing. The one given in Assembly is a dramafic producfion, while fhe more informal one given in 'rhe Alumnae room has a cerfain, ioyous naivefe which malces if fhe more inferesfing. The affernoon of fhe perform- ance of fhe laffer finds a selecf group of fhoughfful girls waifing quiefly for fhe com- mencemenf and also eyeing fhe corner where signs of refreshmenfs are visible. Af lengfh, fhe curfains parf and one-half swings gracefully back, leaving fhe ofher half sfranded in fhe middle of fhe sfage. Here is French so low fhaf fhey can smile in disdain, here are sifuafions fhey undersfand and appreciafel So fhe maidens laugh hearfily, applaud, and deparf in peace and joy. And so if goes. If is all really quife pleasanf, excepf when Madame raises a pained eyebrow over a violenfly disagreeing parficiple or some such fhing.
