VVe should like to predict for each cherished son and daughter a career so brilliant as to make the lives of Dr. Cook or Laura Jean Libbey look sad. Unfortunately we find few such indications. If we followed in the footsteps of our predecessors, we should call to our aid a gentle nightmare or an old Greek prophetess, or we should strive to see the dim fixture of our victims through the fumes of opium, but, if conventionality will pardon us, we shall trust solely to our imaginations. 'X' 'lt 'X' 'lt '39 'X' 'X' 'lf '36 'X' Although we feel that we ought to start with our president, Bill Johnston has had such a checkered career that we do this with reluctance. Poor fellow! Starting as a banker, he sank lower and lower, until finally he settled in California-fortunately for the rest of the world-and became a professional billiard player. From the latest reports he has just broken his record with a high run of five. Our vice-president has been a little more successful. Elsa Rudolph is an agent for the Victrola Company and a mighty prosperous one, too. Queer, how it happened. She used to pound the box in her apartment until folks above and below had to buy Vietrolas to drown the racket. Everywhere she went the same thing happened, until finally the Victrola manufacturers, noting the increase in sales, looked into the matter and made her their agent. Now all she has to do is to move into a place, practice the same piece for a day and a half, and her neighbors buy Victrolas. But we must proceed. We have learned with amazement that Emma Lester and Mattie Seggerman have gone into journalism. Together they are advising the lovelorn in place of Beatrice Fairfax Cwlio now lives on her' pen- sionj and their advice is much sought for and freely given. Reynolds Benson, our treasurer, is a sore disappointment. iVhen he left school he gave promise that he would make a national bank look like a railroad accident inside of three minutes, but he and Fred. Tomkins have gone to the Far East, where with Sophie VVhite and Faith Dennis they are engaged in eivilizing the heathen. VVe have always known it takes a thief to catch a thief, but we didn't know that this applied to missionary work as well. But a few there are who have gone into frenzied finance. Blaine iVebb is making a name for himself down on VVall Street, but his gilt-edged securities are only varnishcd. John Hcintz and Bill Mohr-portly magnates with white whiskers and gold charms on their watch-chains--go down to business in their Fiats at tcu o'clock in the morning and up to their clubs at three. We have spoken of the members of the class who went to the East to do missionary workg others have gone to seek their fortunes in foreign elimes. ln Berlin we find Catherine Fries and Ethel Meyer running a young edition of Cook's Tours, Catherine guiding the tourists while Ethel attends to the business end. Looks like a Fries-out, doesn't it? Viola Palmer, Florence Lemon and Frances Kaplan are all studying in Paris at Il'Bcole des Beaux Arts, and each has at least half a dozen pictures in the Salon. Across the channel are other celebrities. The American ambassador at the Court of St. James is Paul Shontal, and-take our word for it-he makes John Bull toe the mark. Another 1911-ite is in London. Need we tell her 02 name if we mention that she is the leader of the militant suffragettes? Freda has several times come in, through the roof of the House of Lords, or burst out from under the Speaker's table, and hurled the slogan of Votes for Women at the poor, panic-stricken M. P.'s, and has spent the last five years in jail as a martyr to the cause. Rarely alone, however, for with her is her husky assistant, Midgci' Hillas. Having heard some one say that as women cannot do men's work they are not entitled to the ballot, Freda quickly enrolled Marjorie's services. If the question of woman's suffrage depended upon Midge's strength, the weaker sex would long ago have gained their rights. And now, before we leave the British Isles, we must pay a visit to Erin to see William O'Iteilly, who after leaving school came over to Ireland to become viceroy of four thousand naked acres and lord of a crazy fishing-boat. Most of the class have stuck to the United States. Two became so attached to H. M. that they are still to be seen about the halls. Not as students-they have joined the ranks of the tyrants. Grace Greenbaum's splendid work when in school led to her being chosen girls, gym teacher, and Bill Guthrie is the present head of the Latin and Greek department. How have the mighty fallen! Of course, having mentioned Bill, we must tell you next about Dave Page. Dave pounds the pavement now, and, what's more, he does it around school, where as of yore the cop is pelted about once a month with hen fruit and other delicacies. Can you imagine the oflicer of the law and the potentate of the dead languages going arm in arm down to the Victoria Lunch? If you were to follow them in their peregrinations, you would wander up to the Polo Grounds, and hear the cry of Hot Virginia peanuts, five a bag, in such familiar tones that you would look around and spy the illustrious Piza Mendes dishing out nuts with a sad smile. Some clever readers may suggest that peanuts are usually dished out with a pint measure, but Piza always was a funny fellow and he never got over it. Inside the Polo Grounds Dickson Cunningham pats the pill about the lot. He is the only one of our old players to make good. Charlie Lee and Pete Grifling merkled on the green for a time, but have been sent back to the bush-leagues. Chas. is captain of the Ringtail Roarers and Pete is known as Strike-out Sawyer. Elsa Kaupe also tried to play ball, but couldn't do it, so with Ray Braus she became a culinary expert in a downtown restaurant. We don't quite understand why Elsa took to the stove, but Ray's experience in maids' parts in the Senior and Dramatic Society plays undoubtedly prompted her to take up cooking as her vocation. She now says drat it with ease and force. In the press seats at the Ball Grounds VVarner Seely, coat elf and sleeves rolled up, busily writes up the games for the Police Gazette. His baseball stories are the most interesting part of this periodical, which, by the way, is sup- ported through the efforts of another classmate. With the same old swagger, Alexander Simon goes about from place to place soliciting funds. XVe may as well tell you here that Pauline Ehrieh is working on the comic section of the New York Journal and that now it is really funny. And up in a dingy garret, far from the busy hum of men, Louis YVeiss pores over manuscript day and night, and once in three months manages to get out an issue of the Oshkosh Oracle, edited, published, printed, supported by himself alone. Once more the Ball Grounds. Poor old Tennessee! The job of selling soft drinks seems to weigh heavily upon him. He looks about eighty and his voice is harsh and rasping as he advertises his eoneoctions. Milton surely had Bill Gwatlnney in mind when he wrote, Can any mortal mixture of earth's mould breathe such divine, enchanting ravish- ment? Bill isn't our only clear-tongued orator. Can you imagine Milton Bridges running an elocution school and every year turning out half a hundred orators who rival even Blaine Webb? One of Milton's products is James IValker, who as Speaker, with hair au musicien, wildly gesticulates at an admiring House of Representatives. Washington Huyler did not go into the candy business, but earns his daily rations at the Polo Grounds by handing out score-cards---bigger game than the Red Cross Christmas stamps he sold in the olden days. IVashington will rise. 93 iVc buy a newspaper from Bradley Currier, the same Bradley who was wont to kick up Hellenic monkcyshines, and enter a taxi driven by Glenni Scofield. From the rate he makes the meter go it is apparent that he does not remem- ber that a straight line is the shortest distance between two points. However, he takes us to fresh woods and pastures new. As we drive down Broadway we notice a large hairdressing establislnncnt with the sign: BLUMENT1-IAL, Pinemiu Sc BAKER. Through the doorway we catch a glimpse of Theola, Clarissa, and Lucille busily at work, while just outside the door stands Olive Wintcrburn trying to turn customers away from the path of wickedness by distributing pamphlets on the simple life. Across the street the Anti-Cigarette League has its offices. At the head of this organization is VVood- ruff Dobson. You may find it difficult to believe that VVoodic is no longer a slave to My Lady Nicotine, but any of his associates will convince you. VVe ride on for only a few moments before meeting our old friend, Harry Meyer. The Chief has lcd a peculiar existence. As you know, he started out as an aviator, but unfortunately his nerves went back on him and his doctor told him he must give up high living. At present, with the aid of a few feathers, he earns a modest stipend outside of a Columbus Avenue cigar shop. And now our thoughts turn in an entirely different direction. Picture to yourself the delight of hustling shoppers in W'anamaker's when they sec Hubert Howson, clad ai la Hart, Schaffner it Marx, scdately walking up and down the aisles, a truly majestic fioorwalker and a superb chance for draping ribbons. YValter Dunn started out in the same way, but soon stopped and is now a gardener at Vassar, and to tell the truth Vassar has good grounds for keeping him. It is almost saerilege to talk about circuses so soon after speaking of Hubert, but we nmst, since several of our class- mates are in the popular amusement business. Evenbefore we reach The Greatest Show on Earthnwe see Ben Van Raalte standing at thc entrance and raking in the Shekels in exchange for sticky little balls of popcorn. iVe are forced to admit that he looks as grouchy as ever, too. It is here that George Wohlhaupter is to be seen barking out the wonders of the show, describing dazzling desperate thrilling triple trapeze acts perfectly performed by the Hazen-Hamlin-Peter troupe of trained artists. Will wonders ever cease? Of course we are seized with a frantic desire to see the marvels Bose is trying to describe, A ticket is necessary and there stands the agent, Townsend Cannon, looking meckly at us and wearing the same innocent smile whether we hand him a five-dollar bill or hit him over the head with a brick. Furnished with a ticket we go in. Doubtless, gentle reader, you have by this time decided whom you expect to find in this show, but neither Gilbert Malcolm nor Chris Street is in sight, though both have gone into this business. Red is doing the Harry Lauder act at an uptown theatre and clad in kilt and plaid is a sight for sore eyes, while Lena has taken Marcelline's job at the Hippo- drome, and for thc last ten years has just been acting natural. One of the side shows of the circus is Regina Neuman, who in Oriental splendor sits upon the ground, softly crooning an Eastern melody and rocking to and fro to the music. Around her body a serpent slowly glides and there is another about her neck, charmed into a state of helplessness. Claire Vial sits in the fortune-tellcr's booth prophcsying the sad or happy future of all who come her way. It was she who predicted that Ruth Straat, in a perfectly plain felt hat and heelless shoes 51 la Barnard and T. C., would suc- cessfully fill the position of professional chaperon to frivolous-minded young ladies. personally conducting them through Europe with Margaret Garsidc's help. It was Claire. too, who astounded us all by declaring that Beatrice and Lillian 'l'wyefi'ort would develop into cranky old maids, spending their days beside the proverbial log fire, sipping the proverbial cup of tea, and murmuring between sips. The more I see of men the better I like cats. This same il-L prophetess told us that Adrienne Kenyon and Margaret Davis would be shining literary lights, Adrienne as- a poet and Margaret as a novelist, that Rosalie Nathan would write a treatise on the use of the subjunetive in lfrenehg that Con- stance Burr would be a social leader, one of New York's four hundred, that the Katherine McGiffert--Ethel Epstcan -Herbert French combination would tour the country, giving concerts in every important cityg and, lastly, about Edna Henry. Edna's ambition has been realized, she has been appointed instructor in physical training in a finishing school for girls, and she has Carol Arkins as assistant. Posted near the entrance of the circus is a large sign which announces that Theodore Hequembourg, wrestling champion of the world, will appear to defend his title against all comcrs. And now that you know what Dory is doing, your thoughts will turn to his brother, of course. Treadway has not developed into a second Haekenschmidt, but has taken up the gentle art of boxing, and if he keeps up the pace he is hitting now he will some day be hailed as the four hundred and fiftieth hope of the white race. lt is at the Qfith Street subway station, ust as she is boarding a Lenox Avenue express, that we meet Sophie Van Raalte, who informs us that she is living a quiet life in the Bronx, where Martha Frank, Ruth Brucklieinier, Martha Brainerd, and Edith Hulherg are also to be found. VVe suppose that they are all believers in the doctrine that the hap- piest women, like the happiest nations, are those who leave no history. Having heard from these five suburban classmates, we must ask you to return to civilization with us, for there are a few more for you to hear about. Harold Menken has developed into one of New York's most prominent cluh- men. The most important organization to which he belongs is the Menkcn Club, the oflicers and member of which may interest you. They are: President . . HAROLD D. RIENKEN Vice-President H. DAVIS NIENKEN Secretary . . . H. D. MENKEN Treasurer HAROLD DAVIS NIENKEN Zllember . . . H. D. M. Another is Elizabeth Maelay, who has started a school for unites and seems to be making a success. Her star pupils are Virginia Pullcyn and Myrtle Powell, who have both learned to speak pretty fluently and may some day be- come really loquacious. It may seem strange to you that there a1'e any of the class of 'll still studying, but this is too true to hc funny. Teresiua Cavagnaro and Pierrine Simoni went to T. C. as soon as they left Horace Mann, and from latest reports they are still there. Just as all would-be teachers have always done, they eat in the lunchroom every day and come over to H. M. at intervals to observe the English classes. At last but three remain, Donald Duncan, St. lrllmo Piza, and- well, you'll hear later. Donald is president of the Society of American Anarchists, the most prominent reformer in the country, and an officer in a dozen trade-unions, while St. Elmo does his best to help the causes for which Duncan is fighting. VVho would have thought it? Now we hraee ourselves for an effort, but we hope to summon sufficient courage to tell you of the Reverend Thomas llurnet Niles. You gasp, you stare, yet we swear it is the truth. 'Twas but the other day that we saw him walking slowly down Fifth Avenue towards his church, and as he passed he said in low, sweet tones, Good morning, brethren. Then ere we could answer he passed upon his way. lVc looked back., expecting to see a foot shoot out and a passerby struggle upon the ground, or to hear a bomb explode, but not at all. He vanished from our sight, and we heaved a sigh as we thought again how true is the old saying, VVhat will not time subdue P 95 Best All-round Best Looking . Best Athlete . Best Dancer . 'Tis then to the German professor he eries, Ah, oni, co1nprends,', and like startling replies. A few minutes later 'tis Jan to Madame. Oh, what is the use then of study and cram?
