i i HM President Rielin for . . . . . . fioiincil inemher Dirielt opposed. I. OF FUTURE AFFECTED BY CCDLJNCIL This years Student Council has passed several new and vital measures. Some of them were passed with an eye toward henelitting the school in the tuture. Some ol these measures illustrate the concern the students have that everyone should have a responsihility of some sort. lxflore specilically. the .loh Limitation measure, which malqes it unconstitutional lor a student to hold more than one major or two minor oflices. has allvorded more students a chance of getting experience in student government. This measure is designed to aid those memhers ot' a large student hody who under the otd system would have heen denied the chance to have a joh. A proportional representation measure was also passed. Since the lower grades ol the High School are so large, the Council lwelt that they should he allowed to have an additional representative on Council it the class exceeds sixty in numher. This measure has already gone into ellwect. lxfluch dehating went on in the classes this year ahout the representation ol' the classes in Council., It was lelt hy the students that l-or the most part the Council was a representative hody, hut a relxerendum hill was passed which permits the student hody to vote on issues that the Council has acted on which are unsatisllactory to the students. This hill has created a new interest in the activities ol Council on the part ol people who heretollore lqelt helpless ahout Council rulings. Now that these students have the power to act, interest in Council has increased noticeahly. hflajor omces were redefined so that there would he more johs availahle. Consequently the program to spread the responsihility ol committees and gov- ernment has heen greatly aided. Student government, which is so important in progressive education, has received a tremendous impetus this year. The students now realize that the Council can he an active organization with a minimum of faculty supervsion. The lire has heen ltindled. The lower grades have shown they will not let it he extinguished. 'liHli CUMI-QT Pia-iss, INC.. Ztttt V.xicicK S'I'RI-ft-I't', New Yonai 1-t, N. Y. -' o5
