BY WAY GE EXRLAIXATIGN it was the original intention of the editors of teiis boot: to exclude any sections other than those of the individual grades. We have tried to bring the activities of the various committees, publications. and sports into these grade sections with the idea of illustrating the deiinite relationships these activities have to the lives of every student. This has been a momentous year in the sehootns history. it has been impossible to record within the grade sections an the events which have transpired. This year saw the Community Committee blossom forth as an active and influential force in the lives of not only HM-L students. it has had lar-reaching effects in the neighborhood also. The Student Canteen was organized after much planning and heated discussion. The boys' athletic teams had their best seasons in the schoots history. The Student Council passed some revolutionary measures that will affect the lives of the students in the years to come. Highlights underwent a complete revision. To do justice to these events we have included the follow- ing section in the yearbook. Xve feel that if we excluded any of these topics it would he like exhibiting a building with its foundations hidden from sight. Some years from now when this years happenings have become normal parts of the students, everyday iives, we shan want to look back on this year and see how it au began. ALL I-IM-L'S TEAM RECORDS OVER .500 socci-1:2 TEAM uusefuem-CHAMPS The boys, varsity soccer team won the M.A.A.P.S. championship. Never before in the schoots history has a team won such a championship. The answer is simple. Teamwork in every sense of the word was the Rey to success. Personal glory was sacrificed by the players for the good of the teams. The result has Eiited HM-L students with pride and exuitation in the teams. The teams were exceiient examples of what education at HM-L stands for, co- operation among individuats for the good of the group. The soccer team was undefeated in nine contests, and tied one game. They were unscored upon in eight games. The team was recommended by several coaches as the outstanding private school team in this area. Four of its members fscheii, Riviin, Malone, and Etsenj made the all-private-school team. It was a diflficuit job for Coach Culcro to recommend four of his players for this honor. There were eleven potential candidates with excellent quaii- hcations.

COMMUNITY CLUBS BREAK BARRIERS The Lincoln building is a big, impressive, and mysterious sight to most people who live near it. lt isnt a real part ol its neighborhood. As a result. llbl-L students have occasionally felt uneasy as they hurry to the subway. and the people in the houses they pass have at times been suspicious and even hostile. 194-1-45 has seen what loolts lilce a change in this. lt's possible that the Community Club has helped to bring about this change. Organized to help boys and girls in HM-lu to lcnow the teen-agers in their own school neighborhood, it has worlqed through discussion meetings, with a more or less social event thrown in here and there. lts members are from several impor- tant high schools, and the club has given many ol them their lirst loolc inside l'llVl-l.. lwaybe they have seen only the rosy side tot all the years haslaetball games, the Birch-Vyfathen massacre was the one they watchedl, but they seem to have come to lilce the school and the people in it. Other community projects have carried the clubs worlc lurtherg most notably the worlc at lvlorningside and lvlanhattanville, the swell band that llowie ltowe organized, the new Hbjl-lu Neighborhood Center. One ot the best things about this last is that it has opened the gyms to the older boys ol the neighborhood. who have practiced baslqetball with some ol the boys lrom l llxl-L. tThe HM-I, players can tell you ol the fancy shooting the neighbor- hood boys have displayedl Community Club boys have worlced as assistants in the Center, sharing responsibility with HM-I- assistants and doing a lot towards malcing the whole thing a success. At the end of the year HM-l. still isnt doing the community job that it should and some day will do. It is clear. though, that things are headed in the right direction and that wegre really gaining ground.
