Tl-IE FI AL YEAR it was 7:00 P. M. and Lincotn was dark. in the sixth Hoof gym the wind whistled through the gratings. The hastcets cast weird shadows on the hacia- hoard. One hy one the myriads of city tights Hashed on. City noises and the wind merged in eerie comhinations. in the shadows a dark Figure stood. it puiied its coat around its shoulders and looked at the dark gym. The Figure sat sitentty and then htew its nose and wiped its eyes. it was sad. A lonesome horn hontced in the distant street hetow. The rattiing gym doors seemed to talk: UGrad-u-a-tion, grad-u-a-tionf, The htacic figure thought to itseit, Mitts att over. High schooi is finished. . . . So many peopie I wanted to know .... So many thingsi wanted to do. . . . Too iatef, The wind htew louder. :The Whistling wind . . . whistling . . . somewhere . . . tar in the distant past . . . somewhere . . . a whistle . . . a whistief' Boh was whist ing. XVe trudged siowiy up the hiii towards Broadway. The air was cold. 'the overcast sicy gave the streets a dreary appearance. it had heen a tough cay in schooi and i was tired. XVe hoth waiiced, heads iowered, thinicing ahout the game next Friday, our schooi wortc, the kids in the class. Boh tina ty hroice the silence. HGoing to the cance on the Q8th?H MHOW you jest, man. 1 wouidn,t miss it.H HDances are a Heck of a tot more fun this yearf! Vxfe turned the corner and headed toward the suhvvay station. XV e tallied ahout girls and dates and the tun a gang of us had had at the zoo. We won- dered ahout our chances in the M.A.A.P.S.-the pinwheet and the douhie- pivot attack might he just the thing to win it for us. Vxfhen We reached the station we stopped. it was stiti eariy, so we decided to tant. The iight mood of our conversation suddeniy disappeared. We hegan to tau: ahout the war. Boh told me ahout his cousin who was overseas and of the ietters he wrote home. Yve taiiced ahout our experiences and ahout our ideas, our amhitions tor the future.
