WE RE-ENACT TI-IE CIVIL WAR Uxvlaat are we going to do on tlae loody today? -'hlxlargievs loolcing for you witll a slaotgunlqye-filvly luones liave laeen waslaed clean .... H Sounds lilce tlae morgue, doesnlt it? But no, itls only hrloldn Browns Body., in pro- duction. If mall tlae worldss a stage and all tlae men and women merely playersf' tlae nintll grade performance of Hltqreedom Songw was really a repeat per- formance of tlae Civil Xvar and laow it allected ditterent classes ol people. lts world premiere was on tlae pages ol Hlolm Browns Boclyf. lay Steplden Vincent Paenetz and it played in tlae minds ol tlaose wllo read tlae laoolc. lt was in Freedom Song!! laowever, tlaat for tlae lirst time tlme clsiaracters were set down in a script and given deldnite lines to say. But it is easier to set down words and leave tlweir development to tlae imagination ot your readers tlwan it is to produce a play from a laint liere, a word laere, and a verse tlaere, wliiclm is actually wlaat we llad to do. Vxflmen we started to write a script, it was discovered tllat none of us aspiring fand perspiringl young playwriglats laad ever read tlue lvoolc, and tlaat we didnt lcnow Jolm Brown from lxfletlauselalm. Disregarding these small trilles, we set to worlc. For weelcs tlue air was lull of Ulny craclcysf, Soltlan dravvls, and wisps ol? greying laair torn out ol lrenziecl laeads. Vxfe lmad voted to dramatize Hdolwn Pbrowns Pmodyu because we felt tltat it gave tlae luest pic- ture we laad yet seen ol tlae Civil Nvar, even tlaougla we were Warned tliat it would mean writing tlae script ourselves. lt wasnt as easy as we lwad tlaouglat. WE LEARN WHCD JCI-IN BRCDWN IS Some scenes were tifted out of the bootq with tittte or no revision, white others had to be dreamed up out of thin air. Finatty the script was tinished and approved by the ctass. Casting was done and sets started. The music committee wortced tran- ticatty, trying to compose music tor those between-scenes spots when the audience takes time out to rehash the tatest gossip. Costumes were begun, and girls coutd be heard whispering in the halts, Htve got the ductciest costume. tts simply out ot this wortdf, The props committee made a series of impas- sioned pteas, and people began coming to school with such things as antique six-toot mustiets and oit tamps, borrowed from trusting retatives. The new panet-board came, and we had the honor of knowing that we would be the lirst ctass to use it. Parts were teamed and rehearsed at odd times. tt became a common sight to see Vxfhitney mumbting to himself, 'KMy bones have been washed clean .... The great day drew closer and closer. Costumes were finished, and gifts could be found gazing into any avaitabte mirror. Hammers were stitted, and the tast sets were carted down to the auditorium. The delicate odor of set gtue, prevalent on the 4th ttoor when there is a production, was tinatty gone. The production camewand passed. It surpassed even our witdest expectations fthe good ones, of coursej. Now att that are tett to us are memories- pteasant ones. . . . PRESENTATION
