They are heginning to loolc around and notice things, little things that they didnyt notice before, a little lcinlcy-haired child playing in the gutter, a gaunt hollow-eyed man slouehed against the door ol a hrolcen-down tenement. XVe nines are he- ginning to notice and to wonder. Xvhat can we do lor them? A lew of us went to the Community Cluh. Xve made friends with these lcids from the neighhorhood. Vvle found that they lilced what we Xve wanted to get at the hwhysu ol' raeial prejudiee. The Community Center gave us that chance. A large numher ol Hlxl-l. students were needed at the Center. Quite a few ninth graders signed up. the hoys on the swimming team were helping at the pool. The Carpenters were helping neighlyorhood hoys malqe pistols out ol' slahs ol mahogany. The sculptors were in the pottery room helping prevent the little Lots lrom disappearing into the Clay. ' The small Children seemed happy, yet when we saw the traces of poverty, the laelc ol education. and the had health Conditions in their haelcground we wondered how these things will alleet their lives. Xvhat will they have to loolc forward to in the future? How can they get cleaner clothes, hetter eduea- tion, and all the good things of lille? Xvhy should we he ahle to live hetter than the people on the other side ol the street? Xve will continue to seareh lor the answer. QW'
