In history this year will go down as the most critical the wortd has ever known. Such times as these affect us in myriad ways: primarily in causing us to turn our eyes inward, wondering how wett we are prepared to take our places as stahte citizens in the changing scene of today and tomorrow. This hook Witt picture hte as we, the student hody, lived it during the year 1944-45. Our school was our world. patterned on the tines of the world which we are soon to enter, with, of course, idealistic overtones. Has the school done its joh of HEducation for Livingu? Vxfe think that on the whole it has, Qur idealism, white it may cause us some rude awalcenings upon our leaving this relatively sheltered school world, is not htind idealism. Horace Mann-Lincoln has taught us to think ohjectivety as welt as to cherish ideals, and this hatanced hactcground wilt enahte us to face intelligently the prohtems of the post-war world. T hose who have left Horace Mann-Lincoln have seen proved the actual worth of this kind of education that we have received here at school. It is only naturat for us to dedicate this hook to Horace Ntann-Lincoln School and to the high ideals that it stands for. Xve hope that those who follow us will take advantage of the education and idealism that Horace hiann- Lincoln School stands for and has given to us. F. N. L. R. A. J SCDCIAL HGLJR-FULLY, FCDCDD, FEMALES There were many strange procedures we had to get usecl to when we lnirst moved into Junior High. Large amounts ot homework were hig disadvant igcs yet high on the list of advantages was our Thursday afternoon social hour Xve enjoyed our social program greatly tor we had a variety ot entertain ment, such as social and lolk dancing, quiet and active games. tsomctimes the latter were duhhed Uthe loud gamesfyl Qur lite was greatly enriched hy these activities, and most ol us agreed that social dancing was the most fun The social hour provided some thought for our young connivers who concocted schemes to prevent stag lines and to keep the dancing hour lrom heinff too short. The first time we went to the Thursday parties we were attracts the refreshments. Xve soon grew to enjoy the gatherings so much that t e Dixie cups no longer lured us. However, when lvood was served no murmurs ot discontent arose. They are heginning to loolc around and notice things, little things that they didnyt notice before, a little lcinlcy-haired child playing in the gutter, a gaunt hollow-eyed man slouehed against the door ol a hrolcen-down tenement. XVe nines are he- ginning to notice and to wonder. Xvhat can we do lor them? A lew of us went to the Community Cluh. Xve made friends with these lcids from the neighhorhood. Vvle found that they lilced what we Xve wanted to get at the hwhysu ol' raeial prejudiee. The Community Center gave us that chance. A large numher ol Hlxl-l. students were needed at the Center. Quite a few ninth graders signed up. the hoys on the swimming team were helping at the pool. The Carpenters were helping neighlyorhood hoys malqe pistols out ol' slahs ol mahogany. The sculptors were in the pottery room helping prevent the little Lots lrom disappearing into the Clay. ' The small Children seemed happy, yet when we saw the traces of poverty, the laelc ol education. and the had health Conditions in their haelcground we wondered how these things will alleet their lives. Xvhat will they have to loolc forward to in the future? How can they get cleaner clothes, hetter eduea- tion, and all the good things of lille? PREPARATION . . . WE LEARN WHCD JCI-IN BRCDWN IS Some scenes were tifted out of the bootq with tittte or no revision, white others had to be dreamed up out of thin air. Finatty the script was tinished and approved by the ctass. Casting was done and sets started. The music committee wortced tran- ticatty, trying to compose music tor those between-scenes spots when the audience takes time out to rehash the tatest gossip. Costumes were begun, and girls coutd be heard whispering in the halts, Htve got the ductciest costume. tts simply out ot this wortdf, The props committee made a series of impas- sioned pteas, and people began coming to school with such things as antique six-toot mustiets and oit tamps, borrowed from trusting retatives. The new panet-board came, and we had the honor of knowing that we would be the lirst ctass to use it. Parts were teamed and rehearsed at odd times. tt became a common sight to see Vxfhitney mumbting to himself, 'KMy bones have been washed clean .... The great day drew closer and closer. Costumes were finished, and gifts could be found gazing into any avaitabte mirror. Hammers were stitted, and the tast sets were carted down to the auditorium. The delicate odor of set gtue, prevalent on the 4th ttoor when there is a production, was tinatty gone. The production camewand passed. In the following two years, the oId and the new were well comlnined into the compound we call the class ol I46. WE LIKE TO WORK AND PLAY TOCETI-IER Xve have a strong class spirit. Xve Iilce to worlc and play together as Sl group. Isast year the whole class pitched in and helped paint and redecorate a nursery in Harlem. Xve got a Iot of satistaction lrom this undertalcing. Participating in these discussions has made us feel that there is a delinite relationship hetween the llth grade ol LIM- Lincoln and the rest ot the world. Every month and a hail' or so, we have a class party. Several times we have accomplished the seemingly impossilule Iny getting every Iuoy and girl to a party land theytve had a good time tool. OUR INTERESTS ARE DIVERSIEIED Xve have a strong individual and small-group spirit also. lor our inter- ests are diversiltied. Some ol us cIaim to he genuinely interested in intel- lectual pursuits, while others matic no such claims. A Iot ol us Ieel strongly atnout athletics and put our feelings into action. BY WAY GE EXRLAIXATIGN it was the original intention of the editors of teiis boot: to exclude any sections other than those of the individual grades. We have tried to bring the activities of the various committees, publications. and sports into these grade sections with the idea of illustrating the deiinite relationships these activities have to the lives of every student. This has been a momentous year in the sehootns history. it has been impossible to record within the grade sections an the events which have transpired. This year saw the Community Committee blossom forth as an active and influential force in the lives of not only HM-L students. it has had lar-reaching effects in the neighborhood also. The Student Canteen was organized after much planning and heated discussion. The boys' athletic teams had their best seasons in the schoots history. The Student Council passed some revolutionary measures that will affect the lives of the students in the years to come. Highlights underwent a complete revision. To do justice to these events we have included the follow- ing section in the yearbook. Xve feel that if we excluded any of these topics it would he like exhibiting a building with its foundations hidden from sight. Some years from now when this years happenings have become normal parts of the students, everyday iives, we shan want to look back on this year and see how it au began. ALL I-IM-L'S TEAM RECORDS OVER .500 socci-1:2 TEAM uusefuem-CHAMPS The boys, varsity soccer team won the M.A.A.P.S. championship. Never before in the schoots history has a team won such a championship. The answer is simple. Teamwork in every sense of the word was the Rey to success. Personal glory was sacrificed by the players for the good of the teams. The result has Eiited HM-L students with pride and exuitation in the teams. The teams were exceiient examples of what education at HM-L stands for, co- operation among individuats for the good of the group. The soccer team was undefeated in nine contests, and tied one game. They were unscored upon in eight games. The team was recommended by several coaches as the outstanding private school team in this area. Four of its members fscheii, Riviin, Malone, and Etsenj made the all-private-school team. It was a diflficuit job for Coach Culcro to recommend four of his players for this honor. There were eleven potential candidates with excellent quaii- hcations. COMMUNITY CLUBS BREAK BARRIERS The Lincoln building is a big, impressive, and mysterious sight to most people who live near it. lt isnt a real part ol its neighborhood. As a result. llbl-L students have occasionally felt uneasy as they hurry to the subway. and the people in the houses they pass have at times been suspicious and even hostile. 194-1-45 has seen what loolts lilce a change in this. lt's possible that the Community Club has helped to bring about this change. Organized to help boys and girls in HM-lu to lcnow the teen-agers in their own school neighborhood, it has worlqed through discussion meetings, with a more or less social event thrown in here and there. lts members are from several impor- tant high schools, and the club has given many ol them their lirst loolc inside l'llVl-l.. lwaybe they have seen only the rosy side tot all the years haslaetball games, the Birch-Vyfathen massacre was the one they watchedl, but they seem to have come to lilce the school and the people in it. Other community projects have carried the clubs worlc lurtherg most notably the worlc at lvlorningside and lvlanhattanville, the swell band that llowie ltowe organized, the new Hbjl-lu Neighborhood Center. One ot the best things about this last is that it has opened the gyms to the older boys ol the neighborhood. who have practiced baslqetball with some ol the boys lrom l llxl-L. tThe HM-I, players can tell you ol the fancy shooting the neighbor- hood boys have displayedl Community Club boys have worlced as assistants in the Center, sharing responsibility with HM-I- assistants and doing a lot towards malcing the whole thing a success. At the end of the year HM-l. still isnt doing the community job that it should and some day will do. It is clear. though, that things are headed in the right direction and that wegre really gaining ground. OF FUTURE AFFECTED BY CCDLJNCIL This years Student Council has passed several new and vital measures. Some of them were passed with an eye toward henelitting the school in the tuture. Some ol these measures illustrate the concern the students have that everyone should have a responsihility of some sort. lxflore specilically. the .loh Limitation measure, which malqes it unconstitutional lor a student to hold more than one major or two minor oflices. has allvorded more students a chance of getting experience in student government. This measure is designed to aid those memhers ot' a large student hody who under the otd system would have heen denied the chance to have a joh. A proportional representation measure was also passed. Since the lower grades ol the High School are so large, the Council lwelt that they should he allowed to have an additional representative on Council it the class exceeds sixty in numher. This measure has already gone into ellwect. lxfluch dehating went on in the classes this year ahout the representation ol' the classes in Council., It was lelt hy the students that l-or the most part the Council was a representative hody, hut a relxerendum hill was passed which permits the student hody to vote on issues that the Council has acted on which are unsatisllactory to the students. This hill has created a new interest in the activities ol Council on the part ol people who heretollore lqelt helpless ahout Council rulings. Now that these students have the power to act, interest in Council has increased noticeahly. hflajor omces were redefined so that there would he more johs availahle. Consequently the program to spread the responsihility ol committees and gov- ernment has heen greatly aided. Student government, which is so important in progressive education, has received a tremendous impetus this year. The students now realize that the Council can he an active organization with a minimum of faculty supervsion. The lire has heen ltindled. The lower grades have shown they will not let it he extinguished. 'liHli CUMI-QT Pia-iss, INC.. Ztttt V.xicicK S'I'RI-ft-I't', New Yonai 1-t, N.
