r FRESHMEN CLASS HISTORY Venturing around Horace Mann on a dull and gloomy day, early in September you would have found fifty-one strange and intelligent looking faces, gathered together in the fresh- man room, filling out schedules supervised by their sponsors Miss Franken and Mr. Crozier. Everyone seemed to agree that this was the largest freshman class seen around Horace Mann for quite some time, starting on their first year of high s cho ol education. After a few days had passed, and everyone had begun to feel at home, the freshmen decided to have an election.'l'he following president, retary and as student students were chosen as officers: Walter Arms, Billy Carnes, vice-presidentg Colleen Froyd, sec- treasurer, Shirley Froyd and Betty Dougan served council representatives, and 'Bob Laffertysergeant at-arms. A g Those who took part in football and various sports were Walter Arms, Billy Carnes, Jack Vanvelson, and Jerry Franke. The girls who showed their ability to sing by tasking chorus were: Shirley Froyd, Colleen Froyd, Betty Dougan, Beverly Porter, and Betheen Barger. The day to which al 1 the stu dents of Horace Mann looked forward, called Freshman Initiation day, was celebrated by the freshman girls wearing their hair in braids with on- ions on the ends, dresses wrong side cut, one long ankle-t and one short one, and they could not wear any make-up. The boys were required to wear a green ribbon in their hair, make -up, earrings, shirt and overalls wrong side out, one pant leg rolled up, and carry a doll. Both boys and Q, girls were required to carry their lunch in a milk pail, have their shoestrings untied, bow to upper classmen, and go in and out the back doo r. The day of fun and excitement was followed by a watermelon feast at 3:00 in the college park. Two social affairs were held during the first semester. The first one was an Autumn Party and talent show held in the gymnasium and music room. After the talent show, the evening was spent in dancing followed by refreshments.
