C urfain Raisers The curtain will now be raised by the Hi-Y and Torch clubs, who hope to entertain you with a dramatic presentation of their various social. athletic. and uplifting moral activities during the school year. HI-Y Program Vendorsvl-X student entering Gleason field is immediately fallen upon by a crowd of animated football pragrams, offering their services at a slight fee. Hopelessly overpowered, the student produces the correct amount of change and walks off with a Hi-Y football program in his hand. He is now equipped to tell the players from the officials. Social Razzle-Dazzle--After using the program to the best advantage to shield himself from the rain, the student tears it up into little pieces and presents the surrounding spectators with generous samples. Then. the game being over and Horace Mann victorious, the student is seen wending his way toward the Coral Room to meet the gang at the HisY dance. There were quite a few of these dances throughout the football season. Souvenir Vendors-The next scene occurs during basketball season! with all of our actors wearing red and white H.M. basketball pins. which were furnished by the untiring efforts of the Hi-Y salesmen. Parade of Stars-The spotlight now picks out several impressive-looking men, each with a shiny gold trophy which was presented to him by the Hi-Y for his outstanding performance on the football field. The first group of curtain raisers now leaves the stage amid a shower of appreciative applause. TORCH CLUB Top Row: Ioe Yonover. lerry Cotter, Mr. Hoskins. TORCH CLUB The Opening Parade of Horace Manners in Early Season Dress Array! This lengthy title applies to the first act presented by our second group of curtain raisers-the Torch Club. Their Torchlight Fantasy was the first dance of the school year. Souvenir Vendors-The stage is now filled with a great number of boys wearing red and white tee shirts, who are doing their best to sell more of this handsome wearing apparel to their fellow students. This was the origin of the Horace Mann tee shirt. We don't see many of them now, but we wouldn't have seen them at all if it hadn't been for the Torch Club. Dancefloor Dribbling-These dances at the Coral Room after the basket- ball games were given by the Torch Club even after the season was over. Weight Lifters-This white-faced comedy recalls vividly the memory of the deep snow of mid-winter. but the memory is not too unpleasant, for the Torch Club helped Mr. Batezil shovel the snow from the walks. making walking easier for everyone. Solicitors For Worthy Causes-Between acts we notice a number of col- lection jars passing among us. We are soon informed by a poster on the stage that this symbolizes the Torch Club's part in helping the Sophomore Class with the polio drive. They also filled fifty boxes in the Iunior Red Cross campaign. Hayseed Ball-It's difficult to see the act now, because of the hay and corn that fills the air, but now we know the reason for this confusion: it's the Torch Club barn party, made realistic by a profusion of hay. cornstalks. and apples. The act is now over, and the cast has appeared to receive the audience's applause for a well-balanced program. Special Encore of Combined Talents-Now the stage assumes a business- like atmosphere, and speakers are heard. The many Hi-Y conferences are being re-enacted by both groups of curtain raisers. Strong Men and Iugglers Act-Here comes a dramatization of the most spirited inter-club affair of the year-the Hi-Y-Torch basketball game. The reputations of both clubs were at stake, but neither was lost, as there were two games this year and the clubs split evenly. THE ELECTRON CLUB Or Inside A Light Bulb As the curtain opens on our compact little set Cthe inside chambers of a light bulb J two little electric currents are conversing about-you guessed it-Current Events. Well, Ioe, did you get stuck in this light bulb again? Yeah, Moe, I am always on duty in this light bulb about this time every night. It's sort of peaceful and quiet here though. What's new with you in these electrifying times? Oh, not much new except I am still taking that course to become an electron. I should be finished by next spring. It sure takes a lot of studying and hard work to pass the course, but it sure pays off in the end. It seems to me that it's a lot of hard work without much thanks or recognition. That's all right with the electrons-just as long as they're doing the kind of work they like, recognition isn't so important. And the electrons get a lot of privileges that nobody else in town can exercise. As what? As they're the only group in town that can work in the shop when- ever they please without supervision from anyone. That's pretty important because it's a good indication they can be trusted to take care of them- selves-that's one of the things I am learning in electron school. Well, what kind of work do they do there that keeps them overtime? Services to school groups mostly. Like this year they have provided music for social club every Tuesday and any dances at school for which they are requested to furnish their records and record machine. The electrons also do any electrical decorations for dances. Did you notice that beautiful color wheel at the G.A.A. dance?-the electrons did that!
