Chic , Speedy, good broken C urfain Raisers The curtain will now be raised by the Hi-Y and Torch clubs, who hope to entertain you with a dramatic presentation of their various social. athletic. and uplifting moral activities during the school year. HI-Y Program Vendorsvl-X student entering Gleason field is immediately fallen upon by a crowd of animated football pragrams, offering their services at a slight fee. Hopelessly overpowered, the student produces the correct amount of change and walks off with a Hi-Y football program in his hand. He is now equipped to tell the players from the officials. Social Razzle-Dazzle--After using the program to the best advantage to shield himself from the rain, the student tears it up into little pieces and presents the surrounding spectators with generous samples. Then. the game being over and Horace Mann victorious, the student is seen wending his way toward the Coral Room to meet the gang at the HisY dance. There were quite a few of these dances throughout the football season. Souvenir Vendors-The next scene occurs during basketball season! with all of our actors wearing red and white H.M. basketball pins. which were furnished by the untiring efforts of the Hi-Y salesmen. Parade of Stars-The spotlight now picks out several impressive-looking men, each with a shiny gold trophy which was presented to him by the Hi-Y for his outstanding performance on the football field. The first group of curtain raisers now leaves the stage amid a shower of appreciative applause. TORCH CLUB Top Row: Ioe Yonover. lerry Cotter, Mr. Hoskins. TORCH CLUB The Opening Parade of Horace Manners in Early Season Dress Array! This lengthy title applies to the first act presented by our second group of curtain raisers-the Torch Club. Their Torchlight Fantasy was the first dance of the school year. Souvenir Vendors-The stage is now filled with a great number of boys wearing red and white tee shirts, who are doing their best to sell more of this handsome wearing apparel to their fellow students. This was the origin of the Horace Mann tee shirt. We don't see many of them now, but we wouldn't have seen them at all if it hadn't been for the Torch Club. Dancefloor Dribbling-These dances at the Coral Room after the basket- ball games were given by the Torch Club even after the season was over. Weight Lifters-This white-faced comedy recalls vividly the memory of the deep snow of mid-winter. but the memory is not too unpleasant, for the Torch Club helped Mr. Batezil shovel the snow from the walks. making walking easier for everyone. Solicitors For Worthy Causes-Between acts we notice a number of col- lection jars passing among us. We are soon informed by a poster on the stage that this symbolizes the Torch Club's part in helping the Sophomore Class with the polio drive. They also filled fifty boxes in the Iunior Red Cross campaign. Hayseed Ball-It's difficult to see the act now, because of the hay and corn that fills the air, but now we know the reason for this confusion: it's the Torch Club barn party, made realistic by a profusion of hay. cornstalks. and apples. The act is now over, and the cast has appeared to receive the audience's applause for a well-balanced program. Special Encore of Combined Talents-Now the stage assumes a business- like atmosphere, and speakers are heard. The many Hi-Y conferences are being re-enacted by both groups of curtain raisers. The Torch Club was host to the District I Conference and sponsored the Hi-Y retreat for all Hi-Y clubs in the first district. Page I2 HI-Y Top Row: David Flynn, Bob Lower. Virgil Bardash, lim Bailey. First Row: Bob Beck, Bob King, Richard Blair, Iohn Polihronis, Iohn Stiles. Strong Men and Iugglers Act-Here comes a dramatization of the most spirited inter-club affair of the year-the Hi-Y-Torch basketball game. The reputations of both clubs were at stake, but neither was lost, as there were two games this year and the clubs split evenly. THE ELECTRON CLUB Or Inside A Light Bulb As the curtain opens on our compact little set Cthe inside chambers of a light bulb J two little electric currents are conversing about-you guessed it-Current Events. Well, Ioe, did you get stuck in this light bulb again? Yeah, Moe, I am always on duty in this light bulb about this time every night. It's sort of peaceful and quiet here though. What's new with you in these electrifying times? Oh, not much new except I am still taking that course to become an electron. I should be finished by next spring. It sure takes a lot of studying and hard work to pass the course, but it sure pays off in the end. It seems to me that it's a lot of hard work without much thanks or recognition. That's all right with the electrons-just as long as they're doing the kind of work they like, recognition isn't so important. And the electrons get a lot of privileges that nobody else in town can exercise. As what? As they're the only group in town that can work in the shop when- ever they please without supervision from anyone. That's pretty important because it's a good indication they can be trusted to take care of them- selves-that's one of the things I am learning in electron school. Well, what kind of work do they do there that keeps them overtime? Services to school groups mostly. Like this year they have provided music for social club every Tuesday and any dances at school for which they are requested to furnish their records and record machine. The electrons also do any electrical decorations for dances. Did you notice that beautiful color wheel at the G.A.A. dance?-the electrons did that! That wonderful Chrrstmas dlsplay rn front of the Electronrc Shop was a good example of one of thelr projects durrng the year The Electron Club IS one of the few orgamzatxons around school that does any outside work such as dolng electrxcal jobs for chantles free of charge cmd a publrc address system for the Gary College As far as recogmtlon goes the members recerve letters for 20 hours put rnto work after school hours on some electrlcal project They have fun too because thls year they made a fleld tr1p to the Sclence and Industry Butldmg m Chtcago and even stopped off to see the power plant on the state hne They do all thls work wrth a mlnlmum of supervlsxon but thelr projects always are a blg Sure you would Ioe just take the course as I am and youll be an electron before you know rt Yeah I thmk I wrll Moe and the next trme I flash 1n here maybe I ll be a real electron maybe even wxth a letter who can tell? The season's greatest success, according to the understudies, was the Variety Show. Imagine yourself in the fall of 1947. The atmosphere is clear and blue, the sun is shining brightly upon a huge brick building. There seems to be a feeling of festivity as we walk into the cool, spacious halls of Horace Mann School. Above the rhythmic clatter of locker doors being opened and closed, voices can be heard calling back and forth. Hello how are you? Its good to see you again. It really does feel good to be back in school But gee whiz do the teachers have to hand out so many books? Kirkendorfer displayed her accomplishments by leading the Cornet section this year The Oracle Taylor Mr Roesler kept telling the girls each month that their new uniforms would be here next month He finally predicted that they would arrive the second week in September In May the whole R O T C showed off on the football field for Federal Inspection but the HM band really took the spotltght The band had another engagement with the R O T C in the Memorial Day Parade JUNIOR BAND Promotion March Ribble As promoters the members of the H M Band Booster Club are working hard They have raised one thousand and three hundred dollars toward buying the new girls uniforms Dauntless March Holmes Dauntless indeed is the man who can remain in the same room with the band while cornets blare clarmets squeak and drums boom And masterful indeed is the man who can then get up in front of the band and draw sweet music from the chaos There is one person who does it Mr E V Roesler and he deserves the biggest hand March Heroic Concert March Holmes And here are the heroes who lead their brave men Henry Ceperich heads the clarinet section Four years in Concert Band has made him second only to Mr Roesler himself The cornet section is lead by Bob York who has six years of numerous solos and ensembles backing him Bradley May has done a fine 1ob in the trombone section for five years Marvin Smith Debafe Resolved That the Debate Club of Horace Mann Hrgh School shall have had a highly profitable year by Iune 16 1948 Let us devote a bnef moment to definition of terms The Debate Club of Horace Mann High School is an organization composed of all the members of debate classes who have participated in five inter scholastlc debates submitted their names for membership and been subsequently voted into the group The group meets every Monday at 10 30 A M dues are flve cents per meeting The term highly profitable means that the club members shall have performed worthy services for the school and rn addition derived per sonal benefit from their experiences As is evident the organization has already taken lts first step in that direction by electing a staff of competent officers consisting of Don Fmk president Ioe Seamon vice president and Ioel Yonover secretary treasurer The clubs second move toward success was one seldom glorified or even acknowledged but ironically enough the most important That vital action ts the commencement of research on the seasons topic Compulsory Labor Arbrtration Into this study the debaters mvested many laborious hours in order to come forth with new Ideas and cases 9 mmutes Towards October opinions were fairly well formed as to affirmative and negative viewpoints and that club dld tts first actual took place rn La Grange Illinois where the newcomers had a chance to orient themselves rn the mechanics of debate 8 mmutes This month also inaugurated a type of actrvrty completely different from the former work namely radlo presentations Young America Speaks a program given by various local high schools carried a broadcast of an onglnal scnpt by Don Fink Therefore we see that two beneflcial projects have already been entered 1nto 7 minutes fDecember2 Perpetual practice was rapidly attumng the inexperienced mmds to the fast pace of spirited debate and the club though not always victorious managed to collect lnvaluable expenence Fancy Free December saw the club branch off ln another field that of legislative discussion Nine members rrmnnq whom Inn Qeqmnn wgg most ho,-moved being elected senator attended the lndlana Hlgh School Legislature on the 5th and 6th of the month at Purdue University Thus Debate Clubs limits are not so confmmg as its name would signify and so additional opportunity lS given to 1ts members 6 Uanuaryl At this point we wish to point out that Calumet League debates became really splnted and teams worked devotedly toward strengthening their cases fmdrng new attacks and generally prepanng for the Calumet League tournament This was the climax of the year and HM though havmg only two debaters from previous years still placed thlrd ln the city rankmg Was this not profitable? How could the opposition deny lt? 5 Cl-Ialfway through and still so much left 'j Another script was broadcast ln February thls makmg the second time the debaters had entered the radlo field Oratoncal contests too offered diversion for some club members plus an ever broademng scope all of whrch contributed toward achrevmg the resolution 4 Calumet League continued its functions switching from a debate to a discussion group after the season closed with Crown Point s wmnmg the State Champxonshxp 3 minutes fApn1J By way of summary let us point out the Indiana Unlversity speech conference where several representatives of debate wide field of mterests alone demonstrated the mcreased aptttudes of the club members and unquestionably entrance rn such an event brought honor to the school 2 One more sample of profit occurred on May 8 when the club presented its fifth and final broadcast This program con cermng the UN was lauded by all listeners and served as clmchmg proof of debates progress And so we see that through the medium of debate 1 radro broadcastlng and scnpt writing dlscusslon oratory and declamatlon the debate club fulfilled to the utmost tts arms Therefore we ask you to concur with us rn the belief that the Debate Club has had a highly successful season DRAMATIC CLUB Top Row Dagna Simpson Karl Snepp Virginia Francrs Bud Bark Angela Crmmo Fourth Row Mickey Morton Eugene Miller Iohn Schoon Bruce Howland Iud Cassidy Rosolyn N1COllCh Barbara White Third Row Glenn Wright Fred Rendma Sharlene Shraqo Evelyn Olander Trieste Olrverr Barbara Eskxlson Miss Gorrell Second How Debbie Dorman Helen Pike Dale Moreda Ioel Yonover Iean Morrow Mary Rhodes First Row Phyllis Clme Sue Phillips Sally Lou Smith Bob Clark Donna Hillman Iohn Stiles CAMERA CLUB l1I1 Top Row Ann Daugherty Loreth Rundstrom Fifth Row Bet y Iones Ellen Baltmger Martha Laubscher Betty Sassman Forth Row Mary Hare Miss Brown Martha Car berry Sharon Elser Mary Dudley Gretchen Mackall Charlotte Yalowrtz all Third Row Gerry Verba Betty Behn, Ellen Helsing Second Row Nancy Isolampr Anna Walker Krm Hasch.
