Future Horace M-Inn pupils will enjoy the fruits of these labors. At Christmas time the Council presented the Holiday Ball one of the most sparkling formal dances of the year with its Sun Valley motif, In collaboration with all the Student Councils of the city it also helped give the lnterschool dance on May 9. To celebrate the election of new officers the Inauguration Ball first of its kind was furnished an- other highlight of Horace Mann s social season. After doing all this and more, the Council drafted the Social Committee to help us along during our Hrst year without social clubs. The Committee having no precedent to follow, has tried a variety of social affairs. First it gaxe us Matinee Mixers, dances at 4:15 which proved very successful especially in help- ing the boys and girls to get better acquainted. At the close of the foot- ball season the members gave us the Football Finale a dance that xx ill be outstanding in our memories of our senior year. The Committee gained confidence as the year wore on. In anuary it became benevolent and presented the Red Cross dance. Many nosel features were good fun. CAREERS A GLANCE AT 1942 What careers some of us want! We plan a practical career, but many of us have secret ambitions of another variety. Did you ever think you'd like to walk a tight-rope or be a test pilot? Among us are future doctors, lawyers, business men and even a professional golfer. Keep it rolling Frank! Calling Doctor Thomson. He wants to aid humanity and inci- dentally have the pretty nurses jump at his commands. Step lively Barbara Kistler in your nurse's uniform and cap. Thereis the fellow who wants to judge models-lucky guy! Need any help, Dreyfus? Chuck', Templin wants to be a vagabond and do anything except work. Watch Gordon Landeck the G man. He always gets his man! Frank Greenwald has a secret ambition-nothing less than being President some day and-be- tween times-Senator. Will you make many changes in our school system when you are superintendent, Bill? just a couple of old ruins to dig up and archaeologists Andy and Carl shine with enthusiasm. Famous lawyer outwits jury and wins sensational case-great showmanship Bill Fletcher. Take a deep, deep breath we have found the superman. No other than ,lim West. He thinks nothing of getting up at the crack of dawn. What a milkmanl lt's not blue Monday or washboard blues for Eleanor. Oh, happy the housewife who is in love. These little numbers are going places. They will keep you up in the air, too! Take it easy, Elizabeth Williams, Al, Bob, Milton and Dale! It's a lady's privilege to change her face and hair-do, so Mary you can show them how. How's the tall timber, Bob? Let it rain, jack, that's what the farm needs-plus plenty of hard work. What a builder of ships! Dick Thiel keeps an even keel. You have the stuff that talks, jean. Put your best foot forward, Kurt, and don't crack your journalistic reputation. Heaven help you if you don't keep last year's hgure, Judith. I hear the Church Around the Corner draws the crowds. Could it be because Dick Olson preaches there? All the world's a stage, says Robert Brown, and I dote on being an actor. How's the cabin far away in the north woods, Duane? I heard Clarence Daniels finally got his atom smasher working. Famous baseball player that's Ray Partee making headlines again. Scientist working alone discovers new cure and brings new hope to millions. That's the way to do it, Art Goris! Pick a winner and you find it takes nerve and more nerve plus training, talent and courage to carve a career in this war-torn, topsy-turvey world, but we know the Class of 1942 has what it takes. May we all enjoy a measure of peace and contentment whatever the future does to our pet ambitions. Page ni ar 1 1 een , f GFP IOM! Peter Milakovich 1Sergeant at Armsj. We have in our midst, though we may not be aware of it, a group of future Madame Curies, Albert Einsteins, and Paul de Kruifs. These prospective research scientists, mathematical wizards and microbe hunters hide themselves in the Chemistry Club, the Math Club, and the Biology Club. We can all feel sure that Horace Mann is going to be able to supply its quota of scientific workers, for the membership in these clubs is large. The youngest of our prodigies are the Biology Club members. Mrs. Suley has toughened them so they can gaze unflinchingly at canned jellyfish or a dissected frog. These baby biologists worry a great deal about public health. In the space of one year they have heard Miss Van Meter speak on turberculosis, its causes and control, and visited the Tuberculosis Sanitarium to gather first hand information. Even this was not enough, so they trotted over to the Methodist Hospital to learn what they could of the pro- cedures there. They then went to the Sewage Disposal Plant, which the biologists found interestingg that must be how biologists are. Still this was not enough. Next in order came the City Clinic where they saw how our fair city's health department takes care of its own. And for a grand Hnale, the organization toured the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Late in the year, the club gave an auditorium program about the human body. This proved very enlightening and instructive to the audience of sub- freshmen. But at the end of the year these youngsters showed that after all they may not be so completely biologically minded, for they left their deep thoughts at home and went for a picnic at the beach. Or I may be mistaken. This too may have been a research excursion in pursuit of vitamins or calories. The Math Club is composed of embryo Einsteins. To them-geometry, trigonometry, and algebra are the most pleasant of games to play when one is bored. This writer does not share their enthusiasm, but realizing the world is made up of all kinds of people, it can be believed that there are some people who like math. In fact, a perusal of the club program will convince even the most skeptical that some people feel mathematics is fun! Their minds seem to have a general scientihc trend for they likewise went for an excursion to the Museum of Science and lndustry. Then, suddenly, the milk of human kindness oozed, and they got up and gave speeches on Math in High School to the eighth graders at an orientation program. After all, who should know better how to warn the little lambs? Pngv Ihirly The Biology Club is a very active organization. Freshmen and Sophomores have more enthusiasm. These chemists take their science seriously, judging from the asphixiating odors that waft into the study hall. They love to perform experiments, not seeming to care what happens to the rest of the school while they happily play with magnesium bombs as if they were rattles. Though the writer once doubted if anything from this earth could survive close contact with those abominably stinking messes concocted in 310, he was surprised to find that chem- ists arc human. At Christmas time they jfeeped out of their intellectual shells and helped in the Goodfellows Drive for Christmas Baskets. This, in fact, was done so well that I am convinced that they are not only as we fof the outer worldj are, but are very nearly normal! So, for their herculean efforts this year in attempting to blow up our school, we award these self-same chemists their Madame Curie and Louis Pasteur pins with the special deodorizers and gas masks attached! Another group not represented here by photograph or club, but definitely devotees of science, arc those who undertake to pursue physics beyond the requirements of the class hour. An enthusiast endeavored to explain to me just what fvlrgysitxt is. He said something about Energy and Matter and that is as far as I followed. If you know what it is, then you probably study it, and if you don't, an explanation would un- doubtedly leave you as much in the dark as it did me. The classes are almost entirely male, I understand, which may interest some juniors, but it's too late for you Senior gals now. The students spend their time watching Mr. Holliday perform experiments and seeing some of Newton's rules applied Qwho l think was a physicistj. Evidently, if you are a mental genius in a minor way, you comprehend what is going on and it can prove very interesting. At least, so it sounds. They see gravity in action by watching water being thrown at a window where it coyly runs down, and study iron filings drawn by a magnet crawling around like ants. Engaged in such evil pursuits, they occupy their time, but it is said that the study taxes even super brains, which proves Mr. Holliday's maxim, There's no rest for the wicked. Wfe have found OLII about those who make up these Science clubs. Queer, perhaps, but after all, sounds interesting. Now that I have written this, and know so much more about such organizations I almost wish I had joined one. But alack and alas, it is too late now. . . . Basketball and athletics this year were syn- onymous at Horace Mann. W'e nearly did itl Almost! Keep in mind that almost may not mean much on paper, but in reality that's an entirely different proposi- tion. Do you Horace Mann rooters realize what our bas- ketball team has achieved, besides winning twenty-six out of twenty-eight games, in itself a remarkable feat. W'ell, to begin with. it has given us school spirit, standards of good sportsmanship Qthis second means a lotj never before equalled here. The basketball season also took us out of the athletic dog-house. Yes, we can strut around town with our jackets unzipped now so every- one can see our H. M. letters. l am supposing that you all know that Benny Sierra was the individual high point man of the citvg also that when Danny took over in the Portage game, he hit the seoring high with 22 points. The biggest margin we achieved was 33 points. ln the first game of the season Imw ihivi -In in at half time, the reserves took over with 38 points, while Rensselaer was having trouble hanging on to its live. One of the many superstitions of Hoosier basketball is that a team can't beat another three times during the season, and then defeat it in the sectionals. This jinx was knocked right out of the books when our boys defeated liroebel for the fourth time. Speaking of liroebel remember how Dick Dolato saved the day by snatching victory right out of the Devils' hands after he had just missed the free throw that would have won the game? Then, only two days later. in the Lew Wlallace game our reserves, trailed their varsity until the last two minutes. when Dick made a basket. Next he stole the ball and tied up the game. After the Hornets had collected a point on a free throw. he scored a free throw that again tied up the game. Dolato and Morfee both hit counters in the overtime to outpoint W'allace 37 to 34. We started off by forcing Whiting and Froebel under the yoke fex- planation can be gotten from any second year Latin studentj. Then the boys from Cal City slipped one over on us. Coach was sick and couldn't go to the Hammond meet so co-captain Strong took over his job. Hammond gave us the worst losing we ever had in the year Q49-17J. Returning in full force after three weeks' practice during Christmas vacation, we put Fractional back in the box. bowed very low to Lew Wallace, then shifted into high, whizzing past Wiley fTerre Hautej, Froebel, and Whiting again. We beat South Bend Central for the first time Qrecords don't go past 19353. We closed out a fairly good dual meet season by cancelling a suicide meet with Hammond who had scalped us once before. A wise gesture to quit while you are still going strong. That's all for the dual meetsg now we come to the important stuff, conferences and state meets. W'e never have made an impressive showing at the conference and this year was no exception. Nelson came through with a fourth place. Captain Jessup, twice state champion in the breast stroke, slid back to third while Captain Strong crawled up from last year's third to a second in the cross-country. Our relay team also placed third. Our showing, too, in the Lafayette meet was disappointing. Horace Manners, here's a hot tip. Keep your eye on Vince Nelson for the next two years. If he isn't a state champ by then, it will be because the army gets him. And if you haven't anything else to do with your other eye, focus it on freshman Glen Ericson and you won't waste your time. The R.O.T.C. means more than ever this year. The time and tide wait for no man, neither does this annual, so as we go to press Rudy's track men have only participated in one meet. Their showing was as good as was expected-no one knew what to expect- with Leo. Benny, and Danny placing near the top. The team, however, is showing dehnite signs of improve- nient as the season progresses. Well here's hoping you fellows come out where you belong, at the top of the list. Closely related to the sports department is the R. O. T. C., which offers physical education plus training in military science and tactics. Under the guiding hand of Captain Russell Hufhngton, our rifle team shot its way to the city championship, having, in the process, de- feated Emerson, Lew Wallace, and Tolleston. Newly in- troduced this year in Gary is landscape target firing, in which the boys shoot at a realistic landscape picture instead of the old style circle target. There have been several changes in the R. O. T. C. We have two new oflicers, Sergeants Haas and Vender- grift, replacing Sergeant Vandersack. Our R. O. T. C. units gained another recognition. For the first time in the last six years, the Cadet Colonel has come from Horace Mann. Our hats off to Cadet Colonel John Rober- son. With the coming of air raid drills, arose the need for tratlic directorsg the R. O. T. C. has promptly and ef- ficiently filled this job. This year the R. O. T. C. took on an added meaning. Instead of being an easy subject to take and get three points, it is now vitally important for training of oflicers for the army in the not-too-distant future. coles, John Hendry. XY'orls hard in one of the divisions of the Horace Mann ,'Xuditorium. lor the quivering lrosh or the self-assured Senior, there are opportunities in auditorium well worth one's time and ctTort. This year the speech department can well be proud of its record. l r.vnl4 Greenwald took top honors at the state oraturical eompctition sponuoretl by the American legion, Milton Roth won the city title for oratory awarded by the Rotary Club, while the verse speaking has been in great demand with its presentation of Ballad for Americans. , Png. :hu-ly-sn The seniors proved also their theatrical talent by present- ing Trademzarz Turns Gerziliwzarz. A turn to the fantastic was taken and oral-romantic atmosphere created. But let it not be said that the Froshies clon't put on gala produc- tions. 'linffj' Tjler was thcir contribution to class plays, and an inside of the circus life was seen by us Horace Mann- ers. The Sophomores and juniors took a more serious slant and presented Dickens Olizwr Tzrixf and Tln' Prime arm' flu' Pazijwr. The real smoothies-the pride of Horace Mann-are the members of the dramatic club. These students, who con- sider themselves the future l,ynne liontaines and Alfred -ur' 'Gentleman Turned 'l'radesman delighted capacity audiences and aided Defense Stamp sales, l.unts, worked hard for the laurels of this year. The ex- ceptional performances of the following plays resulted: Sjnwmfifzg flu' Nezux, Cozzrlxlzip of Milux Sfamfixlv, The filJfj.YflIl1l.Y Carol, Mills11n1u1i'r x Niglwf IJVVLIIII, and Macflrflw. Pirates bold, costumes colorful, and voices clear, bring us from the drama to the land of song. Gilbert and Sullivan had no need to turn in their graves for fear of opera l'utchers, for this yt-.tr's performance ol' the 1'irt1lt'i of lkrzgllrzln' was .-xceptional. Toby Tyler had gay, amusing settings. And what about the Suzies and ,lohnnies who aren't headliners in acting or singing? Their poise is developed in the regular auditorium period through daily talks about anvthin ' from the babv wandas to Hitler's swrin-' invasion. . 5- . l ll :-Q This strouv also has wroduced manv beautiful and interest- . rl L li 1 . - . ing programs to commemorate special events from time to time. This is our ll. Nl. reporter who is gathering all the facts concerning the antics of that brilliant troupe of circus performers who call themselves the Horsemen. This three-ring variety show, not to be confused with the inferior spectacle produced by Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey, has played up and down Study Hall to a capacity crowd for eight and one-half months and is now climasing the Spring season by pitching their tents down by the lagoon, and giving a command performance to the swans. Right now I can see the three rings, which though deserted will soon display gt colorful panorama of the Freshman, Sophomore, and junior Class activities. There are the trumpets!! The clowns will enter at the far side. Bob Evans, that Barnum in the large center ring is introducing them now. Here they come. carrying huge posters to demonstrate their prowess the past year. The first banner displays pictures of the junior class otiicers, Bob Evans, president, who also doubles as the Barnum of this circusg and President President Secret ary Treasurer W Z Zz 'M x' 171511 Q ' h e , 74 Top Ron Marmlyn Bjork Stew Bjtlrch Charlotte Blake Donald Brown Ros.1l1LB.1kLr Sh1rlLyBlaek.1by Donald Blanr Betty Bartley Herbert Bobele Tlaml Rau ames Carr Corey Bathwtll Glenn Boyd amen Champnon Anxta May Clark Betty Bohn Rxchard Burnham Jamth Boreh Melvm Brown .12 7 Vgilf B K Zfgl, P fy X V5 wqjr Sccond Ron Phelps Bush Rose Cochron Edward Brown Evelyn Chandler Marjorne Butterfield Fran us Bosak Raffaela Cxmmo Wlllxam Clmgan Con stanee Bush Bollom Ron Paul Colburn Mane Clark joan Clark Rnchard Chrnstoph Betty Cline Ronald Corbm Kay Connelly Helen Cole Myron Dxckev Page lorry th 1 , 1 K X 3 f, f . 2, 'Q 2 .T ,gg A I VV C 5' , 1 gtg if Y , , ' ' X 5 4 'Q L sf-5 6 1 ff 272 ,117 ff , f C 1 o ' f fy . of Wffyf A , V, 5 , , f fa - A a 'li ?' Next they flaunt a poster with information about their class play, The Prince and the Pauper, printed in bold red letters. With regal dignity the junior Kings and Queens enter. the Kings leading, five strong-Bob Karie, Billy Nason, Pat Gavin, Bob Evans, Bud Marshall. Sedately follow the Queens, Laverne Milloy, Marilyn Key, june Wzillace, Dot Wildermuth, and Clarice Gustason. The preliminaries having thus been disposed of, we come to the main show of the junior Clowns led by the midgets quite unappropriately titled, as they are the ones who won the junior Home Room Bas- ketball Championship. A gold basketball is thrown out to them from the main box as they join the parade of junior personalities. They're walking around the ring now, crowding the Senior Elephants off the track. That's Don Robertson, head cheer leader, executing the three-in-one double half-twist spin somersault. He does it without bother- ing to land, either, a feat which places him one step ahead of Nijinsky, who was un- fortunate not to have received his training at Horace Mann. Shirley Fender and james McCracken, the Pagliaccis of Penzance, are in center ring ahead of everyone else, juggling notes back and forth-Oops!! Missed one there-no doubt it was a flat dis- carded at the last band practice. Now the whole troupe is in the center ring. These juniors are taking over the spotlight from the Senior elephants as they have been threaten- ing to do for a year. Ginny Florios is flitting about gathering bits of gossip for the Punchinello Press. The big act is about to begin!! The junior Clowns are in a line now, going into a j formation. Everyone is holding his breath, waiting to see what they are going to do. Whtlt are they going to do?? . . . W'e interrupt this report for a few lines to remind you that this circus is being presented through the compliments of the Horace Mann Candy Stand, which, thanks to the cooperation of the students, is quietly and unflinchingly going into bankruptcy . . . now back to thc circus!! An elephant has broken loose and is trying to get something away from another elephant. W'hat is it that makes them fight so fiercely with great sweeps of their trunks? The Senior Elephant has captured a slip of paper from the Clowns. This is a great Hght, folks! The Clowns rush to the rescue. One elephant is down! Blood, no. sawdust is gushing forth from his wounds. The light has ended! All for a slip of paper. But what slip of paper? ln one second an announcement will be made over the loud-speaker system. Will the audience please remain seated. l.adies and gentlemen, you have just witnessed a spectacular struggle. Those in the ringside seats have, l know, by now recognized the prize sought for-a most rare and precious possession-the last ticket to the Prom. Don't go away folks. The Junior act is over, but there are two more to be presented. The center ring having been cleared, our attention is focused on the ring to the right where a handsome barker is announcing the next performers. They are the Freshman Monkies led by Miss Patti Hodson, and her organ grinders---Doris Doyle, Bob Richard- son, and Jacquline Withers. They look almost human, but .mother year at H. M. will change that, soon they will resemble the others. These chattering little creatures are experienced circus workers, having participated in that rollicking tribute to life in the big tent, Toby Tyler at the Circus. During Freshman week they elected five boys and five girls whom they thought were most likely to succeed in high school. We sec them down there now, vigorously grinding organs. This time the girls appear hrst-Doris Doyle, Barbara Gerrichc, Pat Hodson, Mary Stierer, and Mary Jane Wilkins. The Kings, Jay Cochran, Jim Norris, Jack Villberg, Bob Richardson, and Jerry Tuerff strut along upon the heels of the fair queens. Though new to high school and its bewildering routine, these bright-eyed little creatures have Htted in beautifully, and been more than aware of the present emergency, and in that very important matter of buying Defense Stamps they have surpassed not Only the Sophomores but the Juniors and Seniors as well. A very delightful and original dance, the Comic Capers, climaxed their 1942 semester. Schools, teachers, boards of education, administrative cflicers are faced by this same challenge. Yet they must also meet .mother problem. Life must go on beyond victory. All of us now in school must be given knowledge and habits of thinking that will lielp us rebuild .1 world in ruins. WK- must be trained to carry on in the Army, the Nav y, or in industrial, busi- ness, and professional life: but no one knows just how the pattern of that life may change. XY'h.1t have been the purposes behind our education and training here at Horace Mann? The various departments of our School are not intended merely to drill cold hard facts into us, but we are also given experiences that will help us realize the responsibilities that go with the privi- lege of lix ing in a free and democratic world. All over the United States pupils in secondary schools are studying many of the same selections in literature that we do in our English classes. Thus our country is knit together by a common bond of culture. In addition, we have an opportunity to develop our own individual read- ing tastes. We learn how to use the library, the diction- ary, the newspaper as sources of information, and how to organize and express our ideas. What can be done, in a world so full of forces tending to disrupt our government, to help young people under- stand the values and problems of running a government in a democracy? Through the medium of our social sci- ence classes we watch the development of democracy from the dawn of time, we compare the various forms of government, listing advantages and disadvantages of each. As seniors, we are brought face to face with the problems DLI ACM df .,A7!0lA6LCQ 6LlfLVL 6118 Udlny l'uue vi Is lt'l of our own day. Constantly we are urged to think for ourselves, to check and evaluate conflicting theories and opinions. Participating in an actual legislature gives one group of our students an insight into the workings of an important branch of our government. The now popular Good Neighbor policy is net new to our foreign language department. Pupils, besides learn- ing to read, write, and converse in a foreign tongue, study the countries themselves. Their life, customs, and gov- ernment are discussed, and foreign newspapers read in an attempt to understand the culture and viewpoints of the ancient Romans or the modern French and Spanish speaking nations. Modern warfare seems to demand solid training in mathematics, but such skills are also needed in peace time jnferedfing eop e, to insure the smooth functioning of the world of work. Most of us come out of math courses with a more whole- some respect for accuracy and precision Qwhether we've acquired them or notj. The science department of the School does not seek to turn out able chemists, physicists, or biologists, its pur- pose is to help us understand the world in which we now live. A bit of the mystery is rubbed off electricity, changes in the weather, chemical mixtures, plant growth. Our advanced courses give us a chance to experiment and even try our hand at research. Nowhere do we find more opportunity for initiative and individualized work than in our vocational and art classes. Of course, many of us acquire valuable skills in wielding a brush or pencil or T square, making tools. cw we cw . 11 1 I 7 1'll'Nf Rau: Herbert S. jones, XV. NY.
