On Eastile Day, fourteen July, Bass underway. Our hopes The crowded decks, troops Marines and Utes had paid Though few had asked that In convoy to the Orient. were high. everywhere. the fare, they be sent While Pusan - bound it seemed the rule That we would daily take on fuel. But really, though, we'd often wait For rougher seas or wind force-eight, AD sometimes to our consternation Hoses from the filling station Couldn't serve the oil as fast As we could burn it with forced draft. Another highlight of our trip and one which changed the scene a bit Was churning through the open sea To plane guard for the CVE We chased the windmill from our station ,Round and 'round the whole formation. Two weeks at sea, then August came, The ocean looking just the same. But wait! Look closely. After days Of searching in the distant haze The lookouts found Japan was there. Dark mountains rising in the air. -. w i.

And next day in the setting sun Korea loomed. The voyage done. In Pusan town, we realize There's more than stinking mud and fliesg But first impressions often last When other memories have passed. Marines departed there at night And moved up front to joint the fight Then eastward toward Japan we went Sightseeing thru the Grient. R2 time was short, so underway. Marines and Utes were stowed away. From Camp McGill we sailed at night, A secret mission was in sight. A railroad near the Eastern shore Must haul its troops and guns no more. Our job was outlined to the crew Ami rundmg, -ferc eg-H ' 5 '- fmiq , ,what each would do In three short nights of recreation Our landing teams left devastation. The Casey Jones, Korean style Would find their bridges just a pile Of stone and timber where the tracks Were blasted by our deadly packs. And tunnel mouths were blocked by slides Of rock and dirt from mountain sides
