On Eastile Day, fourteen July, Bass underway. Our hopes The crowded decks, troops Marines and Utes had paid Though few had asked that In convoy to the Orient. were high. everywhere. the fare, they be sent While Pusan - bound it seemed the rule That we would daily take on fuel. But really, though, we'd often wait For rougher seas or wind force-eight, AD sometimes to our consternation Hoses from the filling station Couldn't serve the oil as fast As we could burn it with forced draft. Another highlight of our trip and one which changed the scene a bit Was churning through the open sea To plane guard for the CVE We chased the windmill from our station ,Round and 'round the whole formation. Two weeks at sea, then August came, The ocean looking just the same. But wait! Look closely. After days Of searching in the distant haze The lookouts found Japan was there.
