Sophomores Downstairs At Last N enthusiastic sophomore class began its first year in high school with a successful assembly. Upperclassmen were impressed with the amazing talent displayed by the following sophomores who participated in the pro- gram: Barbara Scott, Betty Sawalish, joan DuCjay, Pat Bochenski, Clara Brown, blarlene Walden, Betty Jean Nlarcussen, Alice Bailey, Sherman Fiase, Bill Arend, Eugene fBuZzl YVells, Bill Hawkes, Duane Gay, Larry King, .Xlwyn Nelson, Paul Prichard, lfrling lfspedal, Fred Lawrence, and Dale Stover. The assembly took the form of a vaudeville with numbers of music, singing and skits. The number one dramatic classic of the year was the Sophomore-Junior play, The Big Help. This was a three-act comedy directed by Miss Price and well received by both students and adults. The sophomore cast included lfrling lfspedal, Shirley Cote, Nlarjorie Skaggs, Bill Hawkes, Jeanette La- Rose, and joan DuG.ay. Of the boys who sat on the shelf, three won football letters. They were Urbrey Yvieland, Don VVeisel, and Buzz Yvells. Yo sophomores made the A squad in basketball, but the class was proud of its showing on the B squad. Most of the boys saw action in every game and some of them contributed greatly to an undefeated season. The boys were: Urbrey Nvieland, Floyd Hazelquist, Byron Hyde, Fred Lawrence, and Ralph Freeman. l.eap Year Leap, the Sophomore Hop held in February, was a smashing success. Hill billy decorations cleverly transformed the Vasa Hall, where the largest crowd on record enjoyed Aub Schmidt's orchestra after the Ho- ouiam-.-Xberdeen basketball game. The dance netted record-breaking receipts for the treasury. The class was well advised throughout the year by hir. Gladsjo and Miss lVebb during a year which passed quickly and happily, with new experiences pointing the way to success as juniors. Biology . . . These students find classify- ing the Melanoplus bivittatus 'two striped grasshopper to xozir and other specimens an interesting way to learn about the animal world.
