Upperclassmen were impressed with the amazing talent displayed by the following sophomores who participated in the pro- gram: Barbara Scott, Betty Sawalish, joan DuCjay, Pat Bochenski, Clara Brown, blarlene Walden, Betty Jean Nlarcussen, Alice Bailey, Sherman Fiase, Bill Arend, Eugene fBuZzl YVells, Bill Hawkes, Duane Gay, Larry King, .Xlwyn Nelson, Paul Prichard, lfrling lfspedal, Fred Lawrence, and Dale Stover. The assembly took the form of a vaudeville with numbers of music, singing and skits. The number one dramatic classic of the year was the Sophomore-Junior play, The Big Help. This was a three-act comedy directed by Miss Price and well received by both students and adults. The sophomore cast included lfrling lfspedal, Shirley Cote, Nlarjorie Skaggs, Bill Hawkes, Jeanette La- Rose, and joan DuG.ay. Of the boys who sat on the shelf, three won football letters. They were Urbrey Yvieland, Don VVeisel, and Buzz Yvells. Yo sophomores made the A squad in basketball, but the class was proud of its showing on the B squad. Most of the boys saw action in every game and some of them contributed greatly to an undefeated season. The boys were: Urbrey Nvieland, Floyd Hazelquist, Byron Hyde, Fred Lawrence, and Ralph Freeman. l.eap Year Leap, the Sophomore Hop held in February, was a smashing success. Hill billy decorations cleverly transformed the Vasa Hall, where the largest crowd on record enjoyed Aub Schmidt's orchestra after the Ho- ouiam-.-Xberdeen basketball game. The dance netted record-breaking receipts for the treasury. The class was well advised throughout the year by hir. Gladsjo and Miss lVebb during a year which passed quickly and happily, with new experiences pointing the way to success as juniors. Biology . . . These students find classify- ing the Melanoplus bivittatus 'two striped grasshopper to xozir and other specimens an interesting way to learn about the animal world. COOK: Hoquiam is emblematic of that spirit of friendliness and neighbor- liness which was traditional of the Western United States. I like particularly the democratic attitude of the high school students. Let us strive to maintain our high scholastic and athletic standard by always uphold- iryth t spirit of equality among our student body. KENNETH LEACH: That it's tops in every way except 't e we ther, is Mr. Leach's opinion of the town. He likes. too the spirit that exists in the school. J. GOR- DON E 'D: Some Hsprucing up would serve to make a good community better, Mr. Edlund feels. He likes pep and spirit of the schoolg thinks it has slipped a bit lately. WALTER MORRIS: The stu- i t ' answered Mr. Morris when asked what he liked best about the school. As to the town, It's a. good to live - lots of friendly people. MAXINE WEBB: Boats anchoring at the back doors of whole- es to be loaded, cranberry bogs for national magazines to write about. and fgreatest wonder of alll gree grass all winter! fascinate Miss Webb. The opportunities for developing individuality and initia- tive which are offered in H. H. S. appeal to her. HELEN POTTER: She is proud to be a citizen of Hoquiam. a community outstanding for its friendliness and progressive spirit, likes the attitude of 'the student body, but feels that the students could improve their conduct in the halls. FRED ALLASINA: If only the bound- less spirit of the students could be put to doing academically what they do athleticallyf' sighs Mr. Alla- sina. To make a good town better, the addition of another season besides winter would be welcomed. FRANCES RAICHLE: Exceptional in its interest and support of school activities. says Miss Raichle of her adopted city. She likes the school spirit and friendly atmosphere H. H. S. possesses. Introduction of more art courses would be a great. improvement and would -:levelop much talent which is now overlooked. uwnitiiiliul on Palm- 'Lin Row One Kl'INNi'I'I'H I.l'I.Xl'Il 154-if-1111-'n In Row Two XIAXIXIQ XXI',l2lZ14'4iulnl i'I'i.-lr Q Row Three 'V 'i'1+'l l'i-JI:fmuim f ,J X' .xl.1..xs1Nlx tslislm-,ti , I'.oI'XX'zisIii11glo1u. DONNA CHITTENDEN: A newcomer to Hoquiam from Nebraska. she likes espe- cially the hospitality. friendliness, and co-operation of the students, faculty, and community. so much that she plans to change her name and' live here. RONALD BYLER: Unlimited opportunities for student participation in extra-curricular activities and splendid school spirit. are characteristics he likes. He finds community spirit exceptionally fine: suggests a little face-lifting for the business district. MARIE REIL- LY: An extremely friendly town. says Miss Reilly. The perpetual enthusiasm of the student body is a constant challenge. MARTIN S. GLADSJO: The overall good sportsmanship and the will to win even when the chips are down are qualities that appeal to him. He finds Hoquiam A good town to call home. HARRIET WILLIAMS: Actions speak louder than words, and her years of residence here show that she thinks both the town and the school tops VIOLET SAMPLE: It's a good place to live, a grand' place to work, says our librarion. New chairs, composition table tops, and battleship linoleum for the floor are in- cluded in her plans to make an excellent library. a utopian one. FRANKLIN STINCHFIELD: When a graduate likes the school so well he comes back as a. faculty member. that's proof of the pudding, says Mr. Stinchfield. JACK SWARTHOUT: In both work and play, the spirit of the students is fine, but it could be improved by developing a stronger group attitude and the ostracizing of backslidersj' says our coach. Coach Swarthout, an ex-paratrooper, put the boys through a stiff conditioning drill to turn some of the summer fat into football muscle before the Jamboree, which was barely two weeks away. Nearly 9,000 fans from the entire conference district viewed the Jambo- ree. The big question in the minds of local fans was, of course, VVhat kind of a team will Hoquiani have? The Grizzlies had four lettermen in the backfield and three on the line. blany spectators were doubtful about Ho- quiam's green line, but the Grizzlies lost no time in proving they had possi- hilities when, on the first play of the season, Fackrell scampered fifty yards for a touchdown to defeat Montesano, 6-O. Later that evening Hoquiam battled the Shelton Highclimbers to a scoreless tie. The Grizzlies climaxed their season by trouncing their rivals from the oth- er side of blyrtle Street, 22-7.
