SENICDR l-IISTCDRY l CONTINUED l yell leader and Georglana Dole class repre scntatwe In keepmg Wlth tradition we had our au tumn no date dance IH the gym Commlttee members braved the elements ensnarmg black berry vmes at the r1sk of pneumoma 1n at temptmg to secure the necessary but eluslve fall leaves Wlth a few make shlfts here and there the deslred autumn effect was fmally procured Bob Mlller and Darrell Austln were the two envled class members who as sophomores earn ed the1r football letters To top that Bob was awarded an Octonek football sweater Then came the hoop season Thor Peter son Jack Arthaud Stan Mlckelson Bob M1ller and Ivan Dorey carrled away second team hon ors Not to be outdone by the masculme mem bers of the class three of the falrer sex Verda Glles Geraldme Rlebe and Amta Breese played on the glrls varslty squad Evelyn G1ngr1ch and Verda Glles were more than successful 1n volley ball bemg the only Sophomore mermalds on the sW1mm1ng team were Florence Karl ML1sse Rychard Shlrley Marlowe and G9OTg13H3 Dole At mld year we found that The old order changeth y1eld1ng place to new Stan Mlck elson was elected presldent Verna Sundqulst v1ce presldent Roy Major secretary treasurer John Lund and Gus Sundqulst sergeants at arms Harold Lundqu1st yell leader and Doro thea Dean representatlve Wlth the comlng of sprlng tradltlonal sprlng tradltlonal spr1ng fever developed 1nto a severe fever of energy Ruby Benson fever 1shly exclalmed and declalmed her way to a star debator Georglana Dole and Verda Glles labored on the Glrls Councll whlle B111 Mur phy Thor Peterson and Bob Smlth worked off a b1t of surplus energy on the Boys Councll Jack Arthaud and Bob M1ller d1st1ngu1shed themselves 1n track by wlnnlng places 1n fleld everts Then one balmy day IH MISS Forsbergs room there gathered after school a mysterlous group of serlous lookmg people Florence Karl Verna Sundqulst Elsle Gustafson Ethel Lou Smlth Shlrley Marlowe Georglana Dole Joe Clark Bob Smlth Roy Major Clarence Holm Stan Mlckelson and B111 Murphy Just a peep 1n the door would convlnce any one It was a case for the authorltles or that one S eye Slght requlred attentlon Surrounded by heaps of colored paper the above mentloned sat 1n a c1rcle armed wlth scls sors that snlpped menacmgly as confused mur murs rose and fell Wlnklng codflsh red Whlte and blue saw tooth wlngless sea sprlte and other unfathomable phrases proved too much for any spy At last the mystery cleared when the hap py pamt be smeared comm1ttee announced that everythlng was shlp shape for the nautlcal but n1ce Sophomore Hop For one nlght the Vasa Hall was mlracu lously transformed 1nto an aquatlc paradlse Wlth paper flshes leaplng coquettlshly about the walls The Mummy and the Mumps the cholce for our class play set people guesslng when It threatened to be the Mummy and the Measles as that chllds malady swept the school 1nclud mg even d1gn1f1ed semors Under MISS Amta Petersons d1rect1on the cast whlch lncluded B111 Murphy Evelyn Gmgrlch Bob Mlller Mary Kay Wlnkle Clarence Holm Roy Major Anlta Breese Geneva Sm1th Gus Sundquxst and Dol ores Paylor d1d a mlghty flne job of the play and escaped the measles if if wk Havmg been lmmortallzed 1n the Hesperlan by M Llsse Rychard Florence Karl and Shlrley Mallowe we spent the summer months con tentedly feehng that Th1s our 11fe exempt from publlc haunt Fmds tongues ln trees books 1n the runnmg brooks Sermons ln stones and good ln evelythmg I would not change It E151 . - . . , ! 7 ' A ' . , L . . . . - - , , - . . , y . But thls tlme the tables are turned and we re out to stop the anclent marlner or anyone else who ll hearken to thlS tale' Such scatter bralns not so much no1se clear the halls people and other such gentle comments enllvened the class of 37 s debut 1nto Hoqulam h1gh school As freshmen we looked wlth w1de open eyes toward the h1gh school that lodged so many 1m presslve people Consequently we trled to 1m1 tate the envled ones by attendlng senlor h1gh assemblles and repented bltterly as we remaln C' forty mlnutes after school for our mlscon dl ct All lmportance at our flrst class meetlng we elected Jack Arthaud presldent Verna Sundqulst v1ce presldent Hazel W1ll1ams sec Marlowe sergeants at arms It was with amazement that the muslcal d1recto1 Mr Starr regarded the Junlor h1gh glee club for It was entlrely composed of fresh men' H1s amazement grew however after he heard a rusty number or two from us Yes that vocal tranlng was a necesslty as well as a cultural asset Wlth the bu1st1ng buds of spr1ng the Fresh men Dramatlc Club burst forth w1th a pay assembly that was the talk of the school The cast lncluded Geraldlne Rlebe Leona Neathery Margorle Snyder Verna Sundqulst and Evelyn Glngrlch After havlng been repeatedly told that we were too young for a danclng class we decld ed to put on our Frosh Frollc wlthout any rehearsals though some of us were doubtful of our falry footed qualltles Florence Karl Shlrley Marlowe Roy Ma Jor Stan Mlckelson and George Eres were named commlttee chalrmen for the soclal event 4 After bltter arguments oxer the motlve of our frollc we at last agreed that lt should glorlfy spr1ng and proceeded to buy quant1t1es of pale plnk and green streamers People own 1ng frult trees were assalled by commltteemen vt ho returned bearlng armloads of choxcest blos soms These were thrust 1nto baskets ln the old gym Know deceasedj The streamers we wound about all posts avallable To our eyes the results were lncomparable You can Well 1ma glne our 1nd1gnat1on when 1n the annual our decoratlons were llkened to blg peppermlnt candy stlcks' Desplte our Junlor h1gh school locatlon a number of our classmen broke 1nto h1gh school news Jack Arthaud at a Junlor h1gh track meet establlshed a Southwest Washmgton pole vault record Hazel Wllllams accompanled Hoqulam con testants at the muslc meet 1n Longvlew Verda Glles ML1sse Rychard Georglana Dole Florence Karl Verna Sundqulst and Shlr ley Marlowe won places on the senlor h1gh sw1mm1ng varslty And Flo ence Karl d1d us honor on the Hesperlan staff What IS so rare as a day IH June?
