M SNIPE o Now each of us from time to time, has gazed upon the sea And watched the warships puffing out, to keep this country free. But there ' s a place within each ship that stories never reach. And there ' s a special breed of mortals that legends rarely teach. It ' s found helow the waterline, and it takes a living toll A hot metallic, hellish place, that Sailors call the Hole 11 here behemoths with a hellish heart, their blood of fuel and steam Are armored gods without remorse, lost titans in a dream. It houses engines both day and night, turbines that spin with gas, A place of fire, noise and heat, with nothing but time to pass. U here turbines scream like tortured souls, alone and lost in hell As ordered from above somewhere, they answer every bell. Those who keep the fires lit, and make the turbines run, Are strangers to the world of light, who rarely see the sun. Sometimes these mortals are silly fools, and their spirits do sometimes die; They often can ' t remember, the color of the sky. Every hour of every day, they keep the watch in hell. For if the fires should ever quit, the ship ' s a useless shell. H hen light has fallen to the dark, you may even see them roam Treading topside like phantom ghosts, waiting to go home. They smudge their backs on bulkheads, leaving there a greasy smear Their odors hang in the midnight air, residues of metal and gear. As the winds howl across the bow and salty waves spray the stacks, These lone condemned spirits descending to their tasks. Now this is the story that all may know, engineers who follow the Bosn ' s pipes That the vilest of creatures live down below, and are known everywhere as SNIPES! K
