They started well, slowed down a bit in mid-season and closed with a burst of speed. The Tigers, playing the toughest opposition faced by any team in the Western Kentucky Conference, were always dangerous. Any of their foes, particularly M. B. A., champion of middle Tennessee, and Paducah Tilghman, perennial Western Kentucky power- house, will testify this. The Bengals specialized in a powerful, bull-dozer type offense that was very hard to stop. The football fans of Hopkinsville, the players, and the coaches should be quite proud of their team. It is relatively easy for a team to win consistently at the first of the season, lose a couple of heart- breakers, and then play dead for the rest of the year. The Tigers, however, reversed this process, coming up off the floor to rise to great heights, after a start that would have kept a team of quitters down for good. we of H. H. S. salute you, the Tigers of 1948! 29 IHHHNII E. G. ADAMS, Captain Tgcklg E. G. had the strength of a bull and the know-how which enabled hin to use it to best advantage. His merit and spirit were recognized by the team, as they accorded him the highest honor they could bestow, that of electing him captain of the team of 1948. GAYLE GARDNER Guard Gayle ably carried on the Hopkinsville tradition of producing great guards. His starting line play and crisp blocking won him a berth on the All-State squad. BILLY JOE CANNON Guard Billy Joe was the type of player that every coach dreams of possessing. He was equally good on offense and defense. KENNETH SULLIVAN Guard Ken teamed with Gayle and Billy Joe to give the Tigers three of the best guards in the state. He was especially good on defense with his knifelike thrusts into the enemy backfield. PAXSON KING Guard 'Cookie', although handicapped by a lack of size, was nevertheless a consistent, capable performer. His inspired play in the Russellville game was one of the season's masterpieces. HERB HENRY - Tackle 'Big Herb' was one of the most powerful and aggressive linemen Hoptown fans have known in recent years. His play won him an Honorable Mention on the All-State Team. Much is expected of him next year. BILLY HADDOCK Tackle 'Unk' was a big boy with speed to match. His play in the Paducah game could well have been the difference between the two teams. He will return next year and along with Herb Henry should give the Tigers a pair of tackles that should be as good as any in the state. GRADY RUFF Tackle Grady gave to the team his whole body and soul. He was always in there fighting. Boys like Grady are a credit to any football team. JIM MDSS Center 'Moose' was one of the Tiger standouts all season, especially on defense. He could always be counted on to play a fine game, and his capable line-backing was one good reason why the H. H. S. forward wall was very difficult to crack. ALFRED CRAVENS Center 'Bobo' was the Tiger offensive center for the greater part of the season. He will return next year, and may be shifted to a guard position to best utilize his heady play and savage charges. DOUG SHEMWELL End Doug's versatile end play was a big factor in the Tiger's success. His savage defensive work and glue tipped fingers played a vital role in the grid successes of the past year. He also secured a berth on the Honorable mention All-State squad. TON Y GRIFFIN End 'Itch' was a fine end on both offense and defense. Hb was one of the fastest men on the squad, and used his speed and size to advantage. Much is expected of him next yell' e DON SIMS End 'Newt', like Griffin, was an exceptionally talented receiver. He very capably filled in whenever called on and his performance in the Murray game was a pleasure to watch. He will return next year. 30 Nall Hooks End 'SonnyW alternated at end and guard for a large part of the season. His capable play at both positions will no doubt trouble his coaches in deciding at which slot he will be of most service to the team next year. TOM SOYARS End Lack of size too often kept Tom from playing in many games, but he was always trying and giving his best., Tom was a fine example with his spirit and hustle. BOBBY HADDOCK, Alternate Captain Fullbeck Big Bob, our alternate captain, was the first blocking back to lead the team in scoring. In addition to this he was the key blocker in our double-wing-back system. For every touchdown that he tallied he set up two. BILLY SPARKS Hilfback Bill's drive and speed were a thorn in the side of every Tiger opponent. Be was always in there fighting, aggressively, yet cleverlyg desperately, but coolly. soasr DAVIS Hhlfback 'Daisy' was a capable performer all year, but his play in the Paducah game will probably be longest remembered. Ib not only scored the winning touchdown, but by his canny defensive play did a great deal toward throtling the Tilghman ground at- tack e sonar GERHART Halfbask 'Gruesome' showed his flying heels and piston-like legs to more than one Tiger op- ponent last season. He, like Bobby Davis and Billy Sparks, will return next year. mms cnovss ' Hllfbwk 'Skaty' was the team's scat-back. He was always full of fight and possessed an abundance of spirit, drive, and speed. He, also, will return next year. MARION HANKINS Hllfblck 'Hank' was the team's ace put returner. He was fast and made up for a lack of size by his determination and will to work. If anyone ever tells you that a little man can't play football, tell them about Marion. JOHN ADAMS Hhlfback w e Red was slated to be a key man in the Tiger backfield, but an ankle injury in the summer that wou1dn't heal held him back all season. 'Red' stayed on the sidelines most of the season but when he got into action he always gave it his best. His team mates recognized his spirit and determination by voting him the Cornette Alard for the Back who did most for the team. HOIMRD DIXON Fullback Howard was one of the finest tackles on the team. After practically every game, one or more of his savage tackles were the highpoints of the week's discussion. Howard should develop into one of H. H. S.'s greatest players. KENRY KLEIN Quarterback 'lose's' threadneedle passing and indominable running placed him second in the Tiger scoring parade. Be was probably the fastest man on the team. He may make Tiger fans rank him with 'Red' Almy and Jerry Claiborn before he graduates. BILLY BROWN quarterback a a Chig was a heady, capable performer in spite of a lack of size. His sterling play in the Owensboro game was the one bright spot in a very dark night. CHARLEY LACY Charley was a fine manager, always cheerful and accom odating. His spirit and hustle did as much as that of any player to make '48 a successful season for the Tigers. lanager PRICE LYTLE Assistant lanager Price was an able assistant to Charley Lacy and a hard worker. The team appreciates his efforts. 31 - 9 I ' gl f--W ,N 3 ' X - ' B X BASKHIiAll FRONT ROW: Jim Lature, Duard Sullivan, Whit Tuggle, Bob White, Jerry Brock- man, Ray Morris, Russell Heltsley, Raymond McKinney, David Wells, George Kirk, Billy Joe Powell. Their second year under coach Ralph Mills, they earned one of the best records for H. H. S. teams in several seasons, win- ning 17 and losing 8. The Tigers were hard to beat in their dis- trict and put a feather in their cap when they defeated Central City for the first time in sev- eral years. ' In the district tournament the Tigers played gamely but were eliminated in a close game by the Guthrie team that later went on to win the championship. The Tigers were a team with- out a star. He had a sharp eye for the basket and excelled in floor play. His spirit and will to win were an asset to the team. HENRY KLEIN ' Guard Henry started slowly but developed fast to become a valuable and dependable performer. He was a good set shot but he did the most damage to the other teams with his running one hand shots. His play was recognized by his being named to the All-District team. BILLY BROWN Guard NChign was one of the teams mainstays. He was small but made it up by skill and spirit. Bill was a smooth ballhandler and a fine set shot. He was usually the spark that ran the team. DOUG SHEMWELL Center Doug was hampered by a slow start but he still was the Tiger's rebounding expert. He used his height to control the boards and dropped in his share of points. BILLY HADDOCK Center nUnkU used his size to an advantage. He was a good rebounder and always a dangerous shot. Much is expected of him next year. BILLY SPARKS Forward Bill was a Tiger standout both on offense and defense. He specialized in driving crips under the baskets but he was deadly, too, from opt on the floor. TOMMY GRIFFIN Forward Wltchn was a Tiger defensive star. He got more than his share of the rebounds and when he cut loose with his left-handed push shot it was nearly always good for 3- SCOI'ee CARL LONG Forward Carl was one of the Tiger surprises. He came along fast and by tournament time he had developed into quite a ballplayer. He was capable both on defense and offense. JIMMY ANDERSON Forward nBig Jimn was a capable performer with a good eye for the basket. He was a big help in many Tiger victories. BOBBY DAVIS Forward Bobby was a scrapper and his fight helped pull the team out of several big fires. Bob's play was steady and we look for his return next season. 33 III! In 1948 a great sport was renewed at H. H. S. A baseball team was organized for the first time in several years. The team was a smooth, hard-hitting crew that won more than its share of games, and was undefeated in the county during seasonal play. In the district tournament the Tigers advanced to the semi- finals before they were eliminated by Pembroke High School, the eventual tourney winner. The Tigers will retain six of last year's starters, and the Orange should be in for another good season. The '48 infield is intact with Unk Haddock, first baseg Billy Brown, second base, Marion Hankins, shortshopg Billy Joe Powell, third base, and Earl Cansler, catcher. The Tigers have a host of reserves, and a depth in their pitching staff that would be the envy of many professional clubs.
