Never before since H.H.S. began playing the grid game back in 1907 has the city produced a team which won every game on its schedule. Only two Tiger teams previously have been unbeaten and they were held to ties. The 1940 team of Coaches Ralph Mills and Gayle Moseley played and won ll games, never by less than a two-touchdown margin and usually under wraps. From 35 to 35 boys contributed to most of the Hopkinsville victories as the Tigers won eight conference games and three tilts against outside foes. As a result of their fine record the Tigers won the Western Kentucky conference championship for the first time since 1927 and shared the All-Kentucky league crown with mighty Manual of Louisville. Even Manual regarded the Orange and Black so highly it agreed to come to Hopkinsville for an October game in l94l. Only twice during the season were the Tigers behind their foes. Each time the boys came surging back to victory. During the campaign the Tigers piled up 369 points against 48 for the opposition. The 1940 Tigers scaled the heights because of teamwork and exceptional blocking but the squad was not without its individ- ual stars. Tommy Gray won the widest acclaim, being chosen on the annual All-Southern high school squad picked by Florida pa- pers. He was the first Hopkinsville boy ever to be so honored. Raymend'Wolfe, captain, and Toby Aldridge were also named on the three All-State elevens chosen in December. Aldridge and Wallis Davis represented Hopkinsville on the Western team which played in the annual All-Star charity game at Lexington. The game is limited to seniors. l939, but Orange and falls The Tigers must rebuild their lino for 1941 if they wish to continue their l2-game winning streak which started in November, the same fight and spirit which carried the 1940 Black to the peak should turn the trick again next Tigers 45, Dawson Springs Tigers 22, Clarksville 6 Tigers 46, Tompkinsville Tigers 25, Henderson 6 Tigers 44, Central City Tigers 52, Owensboro 6 Tigers 32, Bowling Green Tigers 24, Glasgow 12 Tigers 27, Mayfield Tigers 25, Madisonville 6 Tigers 47, Princeton . me -, ,Q 'K' -a ' VH i.' Alternate Captain Garland Wilson Fullback Wt. 172-Ht. 6'l' Another of those unsung heroes, Wilson was a big factor in the Tiger march as the blocking back Critics of the Tigers said the Orange and Black went as'Wilson went and success of the Orange and Black hints Boola seldom had an off day Tommy Gray Halfbaok Wt 152 Ht 5'8 Gray was good for 168 points during the season, making the same number of touchdowns as the state's individual high scorer, While he did not make these points alone many of the touchdowns came because a boy who will not be tackled cannot be Hopkins ville probably never had a harder ru ning back for his weight than Gray James Red Almy Quarterback Wt. 149 Ht 5'1 Almy made the spinner play the scourge of 'Western Kentucky being good for three or four yards on almost any play H s whiskers were the talk of the conference and many a good barber longed to get him in his chair He was probably the most u der- rated back in the state Pulph Tooy Atcrl ge Cfua d 'vi 154 Ht o'7' Aldr1dgo finally came dnto hds own after realizlng that a game is only practice in front of a crowd The chunky guard lost that tight feeling he used to get 1n a big game and played almost as good as he used to practice as a sophomore. James 'Butch Lewis Tackle Wt 179 Ht 6'0 Lewls was the warhcrse o the Tiger squad, playing a steady game and standlng out in the team's famous five man line that rebuffed all attacks Butch's improvements over the prev1ous year helped bring the team out of the ranks of mediocrity William Percy Seay Wt 179 Ht 6'0 A rose smells just as sweet by any other name and 'William Seay played even better than Percy Seay did the your before. A fine defensive man, Todd improved on his blocking and his pass-catching to become a standout. Dick Harrison Center Wt. 159-Ht. 6'2 Harrison developed into the finest offensive center a Tiger team has mustered since the so-called good old days. His passes were accurate and stood out in the defensive set-up as an inter' cepter of passes. Wallis Davis Guard Wt. 210-Ht. 5'l1 Davis, one of the few 200-pound lineman in Kentucky fast enough in his senior year to give indications of possible col- lege greatness and to earn a place on the All-Star team which played at Lexington. On the side he fought with dogs on t s kick-off. Livingston Campbell Halfback Wt. 150-Ht. 5'9 One of the quickest starters in H.H.S. history, Campbell was at his best while sailing around the end on the double-reverse play. His broken field running ability was recognized in 1959 but Son surprised everyone by his hard tackling in the latter part of the 1940 season. Loman Meacham Guard Wt. 135-Ht. 5'8' When they pay off for perseverance, Meacham should get the top award. Starting on the B squad while still in the grades, Bunts stuck to football, fought for all he was worth, and waited until the time when he would grow up. Tough and uncomplaining, Meacham should be valuable in 1941 even if he never gets above 140 pounds. Hugh Buddy Adams Center Wt. 160-Ht. 6'1 The pokersfaced Adams made steady improvement throughout the season and looms as one of Hopkinsville's greatest centers next fall. Although he once missed the ball on the kick-off, he was rarely fooled by enemy passes, while doing a stand-out job in tho Tiger secondary. Donald Hall Halfback Wt. 155-Ht. 6'0' Hall, alias Greenberg, never had anything like as much to fuss at himself about as he thought. One of the hardest workers on the squad, Donald was one of the most popular and he could hit as hard as the best of them. 5 W fi NYM. W W4 I ' ' , .fs A .X ' wer-- 4,.. Scott Halfback Wt. 137-Ht. 5'6' Scott hit with as much power and drive as any 130-pounder in the business, literally rocking tacklers when he set sail. Pro- bably no other first year player has shown as much for the Tigds as did Scottie. Malcolm nBellyu Gee Tackle Wt. 212-Ht. 6'O7 Hard as it was to do, Gee played about as good a game as he talked. Opposing players who thought he looked soft learned it is not easy to move a haystack. In fact Henderson and Owensboro couldn't do it. Hilton Guier Quarterback Wt l32 Ht SU9' Guier proved that scrap and sp1rit can make up for lack of pou dage and he was a worthy u derstudy for Almy Hilton an literally knife his way through a line and coaches are cou ting on h1m as a probable regular next fall. Jack Walker Guard wt 155 Ht s'o' Walker, not half as sleepy as he looks, crashed through to al ost regular SSTV109 as a guard in his first year on the var- sity squad Although he was most famous for falling over a fence at Glasgow, he developed into both an offensive and defen sive guard dur1ng the season. Gus Turbeville Wt 150-Ht 5fKf Any senior who serves as a substitute to a hunch of larger under classmen deserves plenty of credit and proves again that foo ball is worth its trouble Turbeville was faithful in prao- tice and willlng to take the knocks of the game without getting much of the glory John Harrison Manager After serving as manager for the football squad for som four years, Harrison should be just about able to run a high school and could make some school a good principal He took the usual complaints against a manager without a squawk and always turned in a good day s work 'We can depend on h1m,' the coaches said Ed Garrett Assistant Manager Garrett was fa ous as the man who told Assistant Assistant Pete White what Head Manarer Harrison said do bfi 2:3 gy-,Z 4 Aoams ay, ue, a lson Row 3: Harrison, Worsham, Smith, Almy, Brown, L Johnson, Todd, Norris la Mow 5: Collins, Coach Qrown, Sr. TRACK TEAM Row s ey, Wolfe, , Baker, Cayce, , Weldon, Lawson Row 2: Word, Gee, Morris, Walker, Grace, Wallace, O'Dan1e1 l,csll, cocwxwwwmwammwwwww ,W , Y -,y,,1, j ,Aw M Ii Q . ggiqy,-3g,,'z'f-r JW., N .,?.,15 ' --G-MQ , 'fv 31 '53, , , QQ nwdmnf w only f I V Eiygmv . gif: 4 aiffffs 5'Tggs el r an LH . They ended the season with a fine record of 15 wins and 8 losses. The margin of victory over the Tigers in the Central City and Clarksville games was only one point. Closing the season with an old rival, Henderson, the Tigers were defeated in a rough, hard fought, contest resulting with the score of 34 to 24. There is a 100-yard straight away and 220-yard dash with a curve. Track was inauguarated as a sport in the spring of 1940. Prior to that time one or two individuals had represented Hop- kinsville in the State Track Meet, Last year George Draper placed second in the high jump at the State High School meet held at Lexington, Kentucky. The 1941 Track Team was handi- capped by the absence of Draper who had been counted on for sure points in the high jump and the broad jump. The annual inter-scholastic meet, which probably arouses more interest than any dual meet, was held April l. This meet un- covered new material for the inter-scholastic track team and gave Coach Moseley a line on what his boys could do the coming season, The Juniors were rated winners with a total of 50 points, Seniors placing second with 50 points, Sophomores third with 15 points, Freshnen fourth with 4 points, and the Eighth grade fifth w ith 1 point. Already, however, it is one of the most popular clubs in school. It has the largest enrollment of any organization of the school, and it gives promise of being even more popular in the coming years. The aims of the club are to stimulate an interest in Latin and to impress upon students the importance of Latin as the ba- sis of modern language. However, not only is the Latin language stressed, but Roman life, customs, government, and religion are equally important topics of study.
