The majority of the squad was composed of sophomores and juniors. Only Gray, Wolfe, Marquess, and Wilson were hold-over regulars from l958, After a slow start the team gradually imf proved and started clicking after the Mayfield game. This year a Tobacco Bowl game, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, was staged by Hopkinsville and Princeton. The Tigers defeated the Princeton boys before tho second largest crowd ever held in the new stadium, the largest being at the Paducah game. They were awarded a trophy for their victory. ' Although Hopkinsville contributed no men to the All-Star game four of the Tigers, Tommy Gray, Raymond Wolfe, Perkins Marquess, and Felix Guthrie, were nam d on tho Courier-Journal All-Kentucky High School Football Squad. This team was chosen by Earl Ruby and a board including outstanding coaches and writers in the State. HLELAWALAH NLelawalau, a dramatic operetta in three acts was given by the mixed chorus and orchestra, February the fifteenth. The beautiful legend of Niagara, the HThunder Watersu, of the Indians, provides the sacrifice of a virgin and Necia, the ehief's daughter, volunteered. On a set day she drifted over Niagara Falls in a white, flower-decked canoeg the anger of the Great Spirit was appeased and the famine ended. When war is threatened by the Delawares, the spirit of the Waters is appealed to again and demands the sacrifice of a vir- gin. Lelawala, fAnn Chilesb, daughter of Wokomis CGeorge Draperl, volunteers. She is chosen by the council to die. Meanwhile white characters appear on the scene, including Eagle Eye CFrank Lacyl, a famous scout, Major Wallace, CLouis Kirkpatrickl, together with his daughter Mabel, CElwanda'WarderQ and several soldiers, CThomas Cowan, Winburn Hayes, and Harry smithsonb. Shungela, fBobby Houstonl, the Wyandot chief's son, appears to ask for the hand of Lelawala and is rejected. He coneeives a plan of kidnapping Lelawala and Mabel. When Kiolowar, fwallace Golleyl, Act 5 opens Lelawala's brother, interferes, he is slain. with the two maids in captivity lying by a campfire. When all are asleep, Eagle Eye creeps in, awakens the girls and effects their escape. Shungela is later captured, but Lelawala intercedes and saves him from death. i In the next scene the war-party is celebrated with singing and dancing, but Marpeetopah, QDick Harrisonl, reminds them that Lelawala must die, Night comes and Mabel's lover arrives. So- wanas, CGarland Wilsonb Lelawala's lover also arrives. He begs her not to sacrifice her life and to leave with him.
