The Tigers came through ten bruising games 'with only one defeat and in the percentage standings, figured on the basis of games wen and lost they ranked second in the Little Sixteen Conference, Coach Ralph Mills, in his second season at AHopkinsvillG, developed one of the highest-scoring elevens in the state. Coaches Mills and Mhseley started fall practice with thirty- six hand-picked boys and at the end of the season these same thirty-six huskies were still fighting their heads off for a place on the starting team, This wealth of material will pro- bably continue for years to come because Coach Oakley Brcwn's B squad had twenty or thirty promising young athletes on the field every afternoon to get their preliminary training, The 1938 season also marked the first full home schedule played in the new Tiger Stadium. The 335,000 plant was built with the aid of W, P, A, funds and covers the entire east side of the campus. The stadium.seats 3,000 spectators and feat- ures two complete dressing rooms underneath. The Tigers, using the Warner, doublefwinghack system, rode roughshod over eight opponents, In all, they amassed a grand total of 272 points against 47 for their opponents. The Hopkinsville gridders 'were honored at the close of the season by having four of their number picked as starters en the West- ern Kentucky All-Star team. After the All-Star game Gresham was picked on the second All-Kentucky team, Boyd and Bohn on the third, and Haddock on the fourth, f ??fiE'?3j' F 'il , ' r..mMv,,m. ., 4 wuax M ' v 1-If dj 4,, , ' Y .. This year, for the first time in the state high school football history, an All-Star game was played on the gridiron at the Univer- sity of Kentucky. The game was held under the auspices of the Oleika Temple of the Shrine for the benefit of the Crippled Children's Hospital. The boys who represented the cream of the state high school crop, were elected, through a poll conducted by the Courier Journal. Of the 22 boys and 4 coaches representing the Western part of the state, Hopkinsville was honored by having 5 representatives. This group was the largest dele- gation selected from any school in the state. The Hopkinsville representatives were Jack Haddock, who was the Western captain, Maurice Boyd, Malcolm Frankel, H. D. Bohn, ana Coach Ralph Mills. The first three boys named made the starting line-up while Bohn played an outstanding game throughout the contest. Although the scores would indicate that it was a defensive battle, the fans witnessed two well oiled machines in operation. An enjoyable week was spent in preparation for the game and lt is the hope of foot- ball admirers that the game will be held annually. Vm' M 1 E 'We 1 bl. w rw, J L -qi 1 A , 4 . Q . V 'i Basketball The 1958 - l939 Hopkinsville basketball team.was one of the most successful to wear the orange and black in recent years. Although the Tiger cagers 'were slow starting, they soon gathered momentum and finished the season in a blaze of glory. The local quintet won 17 of their last 21 games and breezed through to the Eighth District Championship before fdb tering in the first round of the regional tourney at Madison- ville. The Tigers were a bit shaky at the opening of the season but managed to hold their own during the first semester, At mid-term they lost Thomas, Horrel, and Houston but regained the services of Captain Peden and Buddy Gresham. Coach Oakley Brown then set about the difficult task of rebuilding his team and developing a 'Winning combination for the tournament which was only a month away. Peden's presence had an immediate effect as the team began to pick up. Although losing to the strong Madisonville and Central City outfits, they snapped back and decisively whipped Clarksville and Russellville. In the month of Febru- ary the Tigers lost 'only one game and were regarded as the team to beat in the district tournament. The Hoptowns beat Guthrie in the first round and got re- venge on Lafayette in the second. Then by trounoing the scrap- py Trenton Purples, they gained a final berth against Crof- ton. With the chips on the table, the local five displayed a brilliant finish and won going away to grab the tournament tro- phy. In addition the Tigers placed three men, Beavers, Mitchell, and Haddock, on the All-Tournament team, Hope began to run high when the victorious Hoptown cagcrs learned that they had drawn Crofton in the first round of the Second regional tourney at Madisonville the following week- end. Remembering their three previous triumphs over the Cou- gars they began to cast dreamy glances at Lexington, but this very over-confidence proved their downfall. The Crofton boys tried once more and were not to be denied as they noscd- out the Tigers in a thrilling rally and smashed the local's chances of going to the finals. VM- - nw? J F.. rf! A Backward Party, a tea, and a banquet have been the out- standing social events of the year. Creed I have to live with myself and so I want to be fit for myself to know, I want to be able as the days go by Always to look myself straight in the eyesg I don't want to stand with the setting sun And hate myself for the things I've done, I want to be able to like myself, I don't want to look at myself and know That I'm bluster and bluff and empty show, I never can hide myself from me, I see what others may never see, I know what others may never know I never can fool myself--and so Whatever happens, I want to be . BARBAROSSA OF BARBARY Thursday night, December 15, 1958 the Dramatic Club under the supervision of Miss Weldon, Mr. Mills, and Mr. Leb- kuecher presented a musical comedy entitled WBarbarossa of Barbary.H Mr. Uphoff had charge of the scenery which was most effective. , ' A short precis of the operetta follows: Barbarossa, QBobby Houstonl a renegade Greek has made himself ruler of the Algerian pirates. Barbarossa has many beautiful slaves and is always accompanied by Tingad C Thomas Beavers J, his Ethiopian slave. Commodore Decatur, fwallaco Colleyl, of the United States Havy, goes to Algiers to inform Barbarossa that the United States government will no longer pay tribute money into his fathomless pockets and that he must sign a treaty to molest American shipping no longer. Decatur falls in love with Althea, Linn Ilielbornl Barbarossa's daughter, but Barba- rossa wants her to wed Mulai Ahmed Q Joe Stites J, the Bey of Morocco. Jim Crow KCharles Cornettel, Decetur's colored ser- vant, fills Barbarossa's ears with tales of the great busi- ness success the Greeks have had in America. Barbarossa calls his tpirates from the sea and they open restaurants , candy shops, and bootblacking stands, under the guidance of Jim. Jim at the same time is Winning Barbarossa's money by teaching him the American game of dice. Barbsrossa eventually becomes angered at losing his money to Jim and at the same time, losing his revenue from his pirates, who now refuse to divide their profits with him. He rebels and is about to cast Decatur, Jim and Ferdinand fJack Haddockl, officer of a captured ship, into rrison when his plans are frustrated by the arrival of the French consul, flvialcolm Mitchellj. He informs Barbarossa that forty thou- sand French soldiers have captured Algiers and that the only way he can escape with his life is to abdicate his throne and leave Algiers, taking the Bey of Morocco with him. This leaves the lovers, Decatur and Althea, and Ierdinand and Isa- bella C Jeanette Seay D, to follow' the dictatesof their own hearts and all ends happily--even for Barbarossa and Mulai Ahmed who decide to go to America, open a Greek restaurant, and hire Jim to cook for them. The chorus work was given by the Senior Clee Club and accompaniment was furnished by the orchestra. . iw, Tftifii' Qi, 531,54 1 f fd fm 5 r 1 Q , ' '59, ' . ..- 5 4 . ia-Va.
